1 Chronicles 7:12

Shuppim also, and Huppim, the children of Ir, and Hushim, the sons of Aher.

The verse belongs to the genealogical records of Israel, among the long lists of names in Chronicles. It names Shuppim and Huppim as the children of Ir, and Hushim as the son of Aher. Such family records preserved proof of hereditary descent, which was needed after the exile for assigning land and for maintaining hereditary temple duties.

The list of names is fully inspired even though it is hard to understand and of little apparent value for family worship or private devotion. The whole Bible is inspired without being all equally interesting and valuable to all persons and under all circumstances, with its plain parts providing manna for the most illiterate while its genealogies give deep things to attract and interest scholars. God recorded the origin and distribution of races because men would arise who would study ethnology, and He scattered pearls of spiritual truth along the way by which He leads them as scientists, so that many seeking only human knowledge find that which is divine. Its inclusion in the genealogical record shows that God is particular and that a faithful record of each soul is kept in heaven.
