1 Chronicles 7:5

And their brethren among all the families of Issachar were valiant men of might, reckoned in all by their genealogies fourscore and seven thousand.

The verse belongs to the genealogical records and long lists of names that fill the first nine chapters of Chronicles. It records the brethren among all the families of Issachar as valiant men of might, reckoned by genealogies at 87,000 in all. Those tribal lists include occasional interesting matters thrown in, showing the character of Chronicles as minutes of events and lists of names and the like. Chronicles formed one book called Words or Acts of Days in the third part of the Jewish canon, giving much more attention to the house of Judah and the priesthood than Kings.

Such genealogies record the origin and distribution of peoples. They supplied proof of hereditary descent needed after the exile for assigning land and maintaining temple service, thus preserving the records of God's children and the integrity of Israel's tribes. They illustrate the depth of material in Scripture, and this name-filled material in 1 Chronicles is not a collection of promises.
