1 Chronicles 8:38
And Azel had six sons, whose names are these, Azrikam, Bocheru, and Ishmael, and Sheariah, and Obadiah, and Hanan. All these were the sons of Azel. And Azel had six sons, whose names are these, Azrikam, Bocheru, and Ishmael, and Sheariah, and Obadiah, and Hanan. All these were the sons of Azel.
1 Chronicles 8:38 belongs to the long lists of names and tribal genealogies that occupy the opening chapters of Chronicles, the lists and genealogies of the various tribes given in the first nine chapters and specifically the extended long record of names in chapters 4 to 19. Chronicles forms one book in the third part of the Jewish arrangement, called Words or Acts of Days, meaning minutes of events, lists of names, and the like, called in Greek Things omitted or passed over, and in Latin Chronica. Chronicles gives much more attention to the house of Judah and the priesthood than Kings does.
Such lists of names may be difficult to understand or seem to have little value, and their presence in Scripture does not make them equally interesting or useful to every reader. Such genealogies record the origin and distribution of peoples and provide material for study. The record shows the preservation of the records of God's children and the integrity of the tribes, with the genealogy of the tribe of Judah kept especially carefully because Christ came through it. As a record of people, the genealogy teaches that God is particular and that a faithful record of each soul is kept in heaven.
