1 Chronicles 8:9

And he begat of Hodesh his wife, Jobab, and Zibia, and Mesha, and Malcham,

The verse names the four children born to Hodesh, Jobab and Zibia and Mesha and Malcham, listing each by name. It stands within the lists and genealogies of the various tribes given in the first nine chapters of Chronicles, which are made up of minutes of events and lists of names and the like with occasional matters of interest thrown in. It forms part of long lists of names that are uninviting and hard to pronounce.

As part of Chronicles it belongs to a book that gives much more attention to the house of Judah and the priesthood than Kings does. It belongs to the genealogical record that preserves the family lines of God's people and the integrity of Israel's tribes. After the exile these genealogical records helped establish hereditary claims to land and hereditary duties in temple service.

Its genealogical record reflects the Bible's account of the origin and distribution of races and contains material of interest to scholars studying ethnology. Though uninviting, the verse shows that God is particular, and because He instructed His people to keep genealogical records and moved scribes to record them, it proves that a faithful record of each soul is kept in the books of heaven.
