1 Chronicles 9:11

And Azariah the son of Hilkiah, the son of Meshullam, the son of Zadok, the son of Meraioth, the son of Ahitub, the ruler of the house of God;

The verse stands within the genealogical lists and records of Chronicles that preserve names and events. Those lists give particular attention to Judah and to the priesthood. They were kept with care and preserved as the genealogical and service records of Israel.

The listing belongs to the account in 1 Chronicles 9:1-32 of the order of priests and Levites after the return from Babylon. That order was originally ordained by David and Samuel, so it reflects the arrangements of David's lifetime. In this it stands in narrative parallel to the books of Samuel where the Sabbath is mentioned with reference to the events of David's life. Within that order the verse names Azariah as ruler of the house of God. It places him in the line of Hilkiah, Meshullam, Zadok, Meraioth, and Ahitub.

The chapter to which the verse belongs records how work and duties were divided and assigned among the priests and those responsible for temple service. The care with which such genealogical records were kept shows that God keeps a faithful record of every soul in heaven.
