1 Chronicles 9:23

So they and their children had the oversight of the gates of the house of the LORD, namely, the house of the tabernacle, by wards.

The book containing this verse is made up of genealogical and historical records, including lists of names and accounts of events, with particular attention given to Judah and the priesthood. It stands in the genealogies division of those books, supplying family detail omitted from Samuel and Kings. Such lists were kept because after the exile they were needed to restore land to its hereditary owners and temple service to those whose hereditary duty it was. It belongs to an account of the order of service at the gates of the house of the Lord, and that order, though described after the return from Babylon, was originally established by David and Samuel. Guard duty at the entrances of the house of the Lord belonged by turns to certain families and their children as a hereditary charge.
