1 Chronicles 9:3

And in Jerusalem dwelt of the children of Judah, and of the children of Benjamin, and of the children of Ephraim, and Manasseh;

The verse names those dwelling in Jerusalem as being of the children of Judah and of Benjamin and of Ephraim and Manasseh. Before the captivity, members of Ephraim and Manasseh dwelt at Jerusalem with Judah and Benjamin and continued with them in the worship of the true God. For that reason representatives of the ten tribes went up to Jerusalem after the captivity. After the exile, descendants of Ephraim and Manasseh as well as of Judah and Benjamin lived in Jerusalem. This proves that members of the northern tribes returned and that the tribes of Israel continued to exist in the land.

The genealogies of the chapter preserve the records of the people of God and show the integrity of the tribes of Israel. The genealogy of Judah is preserved with special care because Christ came through that tribe. The verse belongs to a passage in 1 Chronicles 9:1-32 describing the order of service in Jerusalem after the return from Babylon, an order originally ordained by David and Samuel. Its reference to work done every Sabbath therefore belongs to the time of David. In this way it helps fill a five-hundred-year break with no mention of the Sabbath from Joshua through 1 Kings.
