1 Chronicles 9:5

And of the Shilonites; Asaiah the firstborn, and his sons.

And of the Shilonites the record names Asaiah as the firstborn and registers his sons within the genealogy. It stands among the genealogical records that form the first division of Chronicles, which take knowledge of the earlier books for granted, supply what was omitted from Samuel and Kings with new and important facts, and say scarcely anything about the northern kingdom or about the sinful acts of David and Solomon. As a narrative Chronicles parallels the books of Samuel, and the list in 1 Chronicles 9:1-32 describes the order of service as it stood after the return from Babylon, though that order was originally ordained by David and Samuel. That same list mentions the Sabbath with reference to the events of David's life.

Its family list provides the legal proof of hereditary descent needed after the exile for assigning the land to its hereditary owners and for assigning the temple service to those whose hereditary duty it was. It is part of the carefully preserved genealogical record of Judah, the tribe through which Christ came. The record to which it belongs shows that God is particular and keeps a faithful record of each soul in heaven.
