1 Corinthians 1:5

That in every thing ye are enriched by him, in all utterance, and in all knowledge;

In everything believers are made rich by Him through the grace of God given in Jesus Christ, abounding in all speech and in all knowledge of all that Christ has granted. That speech and knowledge are gifts and privileges coming from God in Christ, not from human wisdom, standing, learning, or riches. The promise was given to those at Corinth sanctified in Christ Jesus and called to be saints, and it belongs also to believers in every place who call on the name of Jesus Christ. The enrichment comes with the confirming of the testimony of Christ among believers, which is the spirit of prophecy embracing all the gifts of the one Spirit, so that those so confirmed come behind in no gift while waiting for the coming of the Lord Jesus Christ. It calls them into the fellowship of the Son and into fellowship with one another to speak the same thing with no divisions, and to keep advancing toward Christ's purity and holiness in a sanctified life that bears fruit in good works.

Meaning of Enrichment

The promise is that those truly converted are made rich in every respect through Jesus Christ by the grace of God bestowed through Him. This enriching belongs to the church at Corinth and to believers in every place who call on the name of Jesus Christ, who are sanctified in Christ Jesus and called to be saints, and who by baptism pledge themselves to a ministry of good works in seeking to save others who do not know the truth. Through Christ the church is richly supplied in all things, and these supplies are privileges granted by God through Jesus Christ. The enrichment accompanies the confirmation of the testimony of Christ in and among believers, so that they lack no gift while waiting for the coming of the Lord Jesus Christ, who will confirm them blameless in His day, calling them into fellowship with the Son to speak the same thing with no divisions but perfectly joined in the same mind and judgment.

The richness is specified as abundance in all speech or utterance and in all knowledge. It is a broad statement of all that Christ has granted, covering every respect in which believers are enriched through Him. In Corinth this came through the testimony of Christ confirmed among them, which is the spirit of prophecy, and the following verses connect that confirmation with lacking no spiritual gift while waiting for Christ's return. These gifts are privileges granted in Christ and belong with a sanctified life that bears fruit in good works, equipping believers to receive and share nourishing truths from God's Word.

Speech and knowledge so given come from God in Christ, not from human wisdom. True wisdom and knowledge are found in Christ, who is made wisdom and righteousness and sanctification and redemption, so that people glory in the Lord rather than in themselves, in human status or learning, in might or riches. The highest of all education is the knowledge of God, giving fitness for heaven, and no method of education should crowd out the word of God. Workers, including medical missionary workers, are therefore to be enriched by Christ in speech and knowledge rather than trusting to their own wisdom, carrying correct principles into qualified action, living in prayer and sobriety yet with cheerfulness, guarding every word and action under individual responsibility.

This enriching in everything, in speech and in knowledge, reveals Christ as willing and even anxious to bless His people so that they may be a blessing to others. He so blesses because He died for the ungodly while they were still sinners.

Setting and Confirmation

The promise was first given to the church of God at Corinth, to those sanctified in Christ Jesus and called to be saints, through the grace of God given by Jesus Christ enriching them in everything, in all utterance and in all knowledge. That same enrichment belongs also to believers in every place who call on the name of Jesus Christ, who by baptism have pledged themselves to a ministry of good works in seeking to save others who do not know the truth. Through Jesus Christ the believers there were enriched in every respect, especially in speaking and knowledge, as God's grace given through Christ.

The enrichment comes even as the testimony of Christ is confirmed in believers and among them, giving them abundance in speech and knowledge. Christ enriched the Corinthians in speech and knowledge through that confirmed testimony. These gifts in speech and knowledge are part of God's grace and accompany that confirming work.

That testimony is the spirit of prophecy. It includes all the gifts of the one Spirit, so that when the remnant of the last generation are fully confirmed in the testimony of Jesus they will likewise be enriched and come behind in no gift as they wait for Christ's coming.

Those so confirmed come behind in no gift while waiting for the coming of the Lord Jesus Christ, lacking no gift and no spiritual gift as Christ's testimony is confirmed in them. The enrichment is the confirmation of the testimony in them, supplying the different gifts God entrusts to His servants to be blended in His work even though all are not given the same work to do. This assurance is given to God's children as they face trouble and opposition.

Christ will confirm them to the end, strengthening them so they may be blameless in the day of the Lord Jesus Christ. Having been called unto the fellowship of His Son Jesus Christ our Lord, they are held blameless in His day through that fellowship.

That fellowship with the Son calls them into fellowship with one another, to all speak the same thing with no divisions but perfectly joined together in the same mind and in the same judgment. The gifts connected with the confirmed testimony and with fellowship in Christ should lead also to fellowship with fellow believers and harmony in the church. God requires this perfect unity, with character judged by fruit as doers of the Word.

Gifts Sanctification and Hope

Utterance and knowledge are gifts of the Holy Spirit by which Christ enriches believers in every respect, and they are privileges that call believers to keep advancing in the Christian life and growing toward Christ's purity and holiness. The enrichment belongs to the grace given through Christ and is part of the spiritual blessing of sanctification, available to every Christian. It belongs with a sanctified life that bears fruit in good works, for God enriched the Corinthian believers in every way, especially in speech and knowledge, so that they lacked no spiritual gift.

The same grace coming from Christ that distinguished Paul and Apollos for spiritual excellencies will today be imparted to devoted Christian missionaries. God desires His children to have intelligence and knowledge and to cultivate their physical and mental powers to the utmost of their ability, so that where His providence calls them to work for Him His glory may be revealed in the world with unmistakable clearness and power. When the remnant of the last generation are fully confirmed in the testimony of Jesus, which includes all the gifts of the one Spirit, they will likewise be enriched in all speech and all knowledge and come behind in no gift while waiting for the coming of the Lord Jesus Christ.

The verse stands among the precious assurances in the opening chapters that give comfort and encouragement to God's children during trouble and opposition. That assurance is that Christ's testimony is confirmed in them, they lack no spiritual gift as they wait for His coming, and He will strengthen them to the end so they may be blameless. The enrichment is the confirmation of the testimony of Christ in believers, supplying the different gifts God entrusts to His servants to be blended in His work even though all are not given the same work to do, so that they come behind in no gift while waiting for the coming of the Lord Jesus Christ, who will confirm them unto the end blameless. It therefore requires perfect unity, with all speaking the same thing and perfectly joined together in the same mind and in the same judgment, with no divisions.

Education and True Knowledge

The verse belongs to the truths of the opening chapters that are to be understood and put into practice as part of the knowledge of God. That knowledge of God is the highest of all education, and it is to be taken into practical life for the development of godly character. True enrichment comes in Christ Jesus, and gives fitness for heaven.

True wisdom and knowledge come from God in Christ, not from human status, learning, wisdom, might, or riches. In Christ are found wisdom and righteousness and sanctification and redemption. They are given so that people glory in the Lord rather than in themselves.

The first and second chapters are to be read with deep interest with prayer for understanding in order to comprehend them and put them into practice. The first chapter is to be read and studied to get back into right lines of work in leading out a people and preparing them for translation, standing as sentinels for God, laboring unitedly, being servants of all, and following in the footsteps of Jesus. No method of education should crowd out the word of God.

The enrichment in all utterance and in all knowledge equips believers to receive nourishing truths from God's Word and to share those truths with others. It equips them to share light through good works, as those sanctified in Christ Jesus and called to be saints who by baptism have pledged themselves to a ministry of good works in seeking to save others who do not know the truth. Those so enriched come behind in no gift as they wait for Christ's coming.

The grace given by Jesus Christ enriches every soul newly come to the faith in everything, in speech and in knowledge. In that enrichment personal diligence is constantly practiced, and personal reformation of character is carried out as aggressive work on Protestant principles. By it believers are kept from delusive infatuations and from interwoven deluded principles and practices opposed to religious freedom that seek to control the conscience.

Practice and Mission Work

The text is to be read in the churches and carried into practice by ministers of the Word and teachers, bringing unity so that all speak the same thing with no divisions but are perfectly joined together in the same mind and in the same judgment. Character is to be judged by fruit, as doers of the Word bearing evidence as co-laborers with Jesus Christ. The grace given by Jesus Christ to those sanctified in Christ Jesus enriches them in everything, in all utterance and in all knowledge, even as the testimony of Christ is confirmed in them. So enriched they come behind in no gift while waiting for the coming of the Lord Jesus Christ, who shall confirm them unto the end that they may be blameless in the day of the Lord Jesus Christ through the fellowship of His Son Jesus Christ our Lord.

The enrichment comes when the Holy Spirit molds and fashions minds and hearts and is revealed in heartfelt thanksgiving. It includes increase of knowledge in every line of health reform brought into practical life. It gives the trumpet a certain sound in proclaiming the third angel's message with medical missionary work done in connection with the gospel message for this time. With the testimony of Christ confirmed in them, believers so enriched come behind in no gift while waiting for the coming of the Lord Jesus Christ, who confirms them unto the end that they may be blameless in the day of the Lord Jesus Christ, called unto the fellowship of His Son Jesus Christ our Lord to all speak the same thing with no divisions but perfectly joined together in the same mind and in the same judgment.

Medical missionary work in all its bearings must be what its name signifies, with workers enriched by Christ in speech and knowledge rather than trusting to their own wisdom. Correct principles must be carried into action by physicians, with no careless, cheap education and no undertaking of complicated, difficult cases without qualification. Everyone connected with the sanitarium is to live in much prayer and sobriety, yet with cheerfulness and the sunshine of Christ, watching and constantly praying and guarding every movement in word and action in connection with nurses so there are no evil surmisings. Both teachers and students are on test and trial with individual responsibility, and when each becomes as God would have him, the Lord works with the teachers, physicians, and students.

The verse applies to forming character according to the divine model and Christ's example. Heavenly intelligences are waiting to cooperate with the human agent in reshaping character according to the divine model. God supplies what is needed as people cooperate with Him. It presses the choice whether to do God-given work or to bend all effort toward shaping character after the worldly pattern.
