1 Corinthians 11:22

What? have ye not houses to eat and to drink in? or despise ye the church of God, and shame them that have not? What shall I say to you? shall I praise you in this? I praise you not.

The rebuke is aimed at turning the gathering of the church into an occasion for selfish feasting rather than reverently honoring the Lord's Supper. In that gathering the wealthy brought and consumed lavish food while poor believers with only meager provisions were put to shame, and this unequal indulgence expressed contempt both for the church of God and for those who had little. Such feasting copied the pattern of idolatrous feasts and degraded worship into a scene of revelry. Ordinary eating and drinking belong in private houses at home, not in the assembly in a manner that humiliates fellow believers.
