1 Corinthians 14:3

But he that prophesieth speaketh unto men to edification, and exhortation, and comfort.

True prophecy is spoken to people for their good, to build them up and to strengthen the church. It encourages those who are fainthearted, and it corrects and reproves those who are going astray. At the same time it urges toward what is right and gives comfort.

Genuinely useful prophetic ministry is known by its fruit, in contrast to counterfeit tongues and noisy excitement which produce no good fruit or lasting spiritual growth. Meetings that truly benefit do not rest on excitement but foster solemn self-examination, humility, and learning from Christ.
