1 Corinthians 15:58

Therefore, my beloved brethren, be ye stedfast, unmoveable, always abounding in the work of the Lord, forasmuch as ye know that your labour is not in vain in the Lord.

Because Christ's victory over sin, death and the grave in the resurrection guarantees that the faithful will be raised to live forever with Him, believers are urged to stand firm, unshaken and always overflowing in the Lord's work, knowing their labor in Him is not wasted. To be steadfast and unmovable is to hold fast to truth and to God's promises by faith, continuing to the end without being moved by opposition, doubt, excitement or fear. To always abound is to give the whole life daily and unwearyingly to God in proclaiming the gospel and drawing souls to Christ, with living faith, zeal, prayer and obedience after Christ's example. Such labor is never in vain, for God works with it by His Spirit to give life and growth, He remembers and rewards every faithful service, and even humble or seemingly fruitless efforts bear eternal fruit and bless the worker.

Context and Wording

The verse belongs to Paul's teaching on the resurrection, which affirms the literal resurrection of the dead and answers the objections of how the dead are raised and with what body they come. The identity of the resurrected person does not depend on the same particles of matter returning to the body, but rests in continuity of organization.

The verse is the word of Christ as man's Redeemer, given ever since the fall to all who unite with Him in His great work. It charges all who are joined with Him in saving perishing souls from ruin to stay firm and keep laboring abundantly in the Lord's work without weariness in doing good. This is a warfare in which there is no release, where Satan's agents never pause in their work of destruction and every outpost must be watched. The work is of infinite greatness, and success in it comes only through union with Him.

Paul used this appeal to urge the Corinthian believers to reject false and dangerous ideas and practices and to live faithfully in their calling, remaining steadfast and unshaken while continually giving themselves to the Lord's work as part of the lifelong struggle toward eternal life and perfection in Christ. He labored intensely to strengthen believers so they would stand firm in the gospel and bear faithful witness through the trials ahead, with assurance that labor done for the Lord is not in vain.

Steadfastness means holding fast and standing stiffly in the truth so that nothing moves from it, remaining firm and unshaken in faith. It is faithfulness held to the end until the deliverance that is soon to come. God is able to keep believers from falling and to present them faultless before His glory with joy, when the faithful will enjoy the company of Jesus and angels.

Resurrection Victory Grounds Appeal

Thanks are due to God because victory over sin and death and over death and the grave is given through the Lord Jesus Christ in the resurrection. Breaking God's law brings death and condemnation from which no one can save himself, so this victory is the ground of confidence for service. Therefore those whose hearts are purified and made contrite over disobedience to the precepts of Jehovah are to remain steadfast and unmovable, always abounding in the work of the Lord. Because the victory is sure, they know that labor done in the Lord is not in vain.

This steadfast abounding is grounded in the triumph of the resurrection that the faithful will be raised to live forever with their Lord. The hope of immortality lifts believers out of selfish and sensual living and glorifies their lives.

The resurrection is a doctrine on which the most stress is laid in the gospel, continually insisted upon to excite believers to diligence, obedience, and cheerfulness in always abounding in the work of the Lord. Labor in the Lord is not in vain because the resurrection of the flesh is real. Neglect of the resurrection obscures and weakens this call to faithful service.

In view of the eternal home set before the believer, where there is no sickness, no sorrow, and no death and where life measures with the life of God, piety must be always abounding. To abound means to labor for souls with all intelligence and powers. It means striving not for eloquence and honor but for simplicity of life and simplicity of speech after Christ, whose words were simple and understood by the most simple. It means letting faith take hold of Christ, listening to His words, seeking to do His works, and taking hold of the hope of immortality that gives everlasting life in the kingdom of glory, in the strength of His promise of greater works.

Call to Steadfast Endurance

Believers are to remain steadfast in the faith and unshaken in their work, not moved from it by passing religious excitement, and to hold firmly and persist in earnest efforts to help others understand and obey God's truth even when opposed or misrepresented. That work is to let the light of truth revealed in God's law shine into other minds and lead people out of darkness, and it calls for determined, persevering effort and a fixed purpose. To be unmovable is to resist doubt and skepticism by walking by faith and staying near to God. It is to hold firmly to righteousness and to God's eternal promises even when unseen.

Faith in the Lord and obedience to His commands give power to stand against evil, and confidence must remain firm to the end. This steadfastness includes a strong, consistent character not subdued by adverse circumstances, and integrity that cannot be swayed by flattery, bribery, or fear. It means being rooted and grounded and unmovable in present truth, riveted to the eternal Rock, which is the only safety now, because even a little leaven of false doctrine works much harm to those not so anchored.

This steadfastness is urgently needed amid the closing scenes of earth's history, and applies with special urgency because believers are living amid them. It is needed for the shaking time just before the Son of man comes in the clouds of heaven with power and great glory, when everything that can be shaken will be shaken, so every soul must be wide awake and heed Christ's words about the law of God in order not to be taken unawares. Those proclaiming the third angel's message amid detraction and falsehood are to stand at their post, resist the enemy with God's Word, and give themselves wholly to God, whose strength and the help of the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit make their service possible. Those who obey God's commandments amid growing hatred should not hide their faith or join the majority in doing evil, and other believers should not condemn them for standing firm. Believers must remain firm and immovable, always fully engaged in the work of the Lord while they watch and wait for Jesus, with all hope founded in Christ, because Christ's promise is sure and the time is short, and this prepares a people to stand in the day of the Lord.

To be steadfast and immovable now is not easy, for a power moving from beneath is taking hold of minds and assailants are not few but legion. Those who have had a cheap and uncertain experience have very little prospect of holding fast the faith and enduring unto the end. Only those who abide in Christ will prove true and faithful, for there is only One whose power can render a person steadfast and immovable unto the end. In the harvest field where there are many sowers and many reapers, workers are to lay aside distrust of brethren because distrust brings bondage, and to be diligent workers, steadfast, unmovable, always abounding in the work of the Lord, knowing that labor in the Lord is not in vain. Ministers working together in Christlike unity fulfill this, for united labor makes a strong impression, while contention and divisions hinder the work.

Steadfastness means holding the standard of truth high to draw others up to it, and staying decided, fixed, established, and not of a doubtful mind, never yielding the truth to please anyone. Even when companions and children will not walk the self-denying, narrow, cross-bearing pathway, the believer walks the straight path alone and pursues a straightforward course, letting duty to God come before duty to them. Trials are to be endured with patience and forbearance, sustained by a hope that makes the soul strong and lifts above earthly trials, scorn, derision, and reproach. Harsh, unkind spirit and angry words are to be put away, unbelieving family treated tenderly, no occasion given them to reproach the cause of Christ, their life here made as pleasant as possible, and they are to be pitied because this poor world is all the heaven they will have.

Abounding in Lord's Work

Those joined to Christ are to stay firm and keep overflowing in the Lord's work without growing weary, laboring diligently as sowers and reapers in the harvest field and trusting God for strength to meet responsibilities, knowing such labor in Him is worthwhile and not in vain. Abounding means constant, overflowing, daily and unending work, with new obligations each day and each finished duty beginning the next. It is a whole life consecrated to God with living, acting, increasing faith and zeal, no divided service and no sleeping, the heart yielded entirely to the Word, refusing to tire in doing good. Earnestness and power in making known Jesus measures faith in the message, and the work is done in prayerful, watchful, solemn service in complete obedience to Christ as example, each person working according to ability. This faithful life-service forms character after the divine likeness pleasing to God, fits for entrance into the everlasting kingdom, decides eternal destiny, and rewards are proportioned to work done heartily unto the Lord.

That work is proclaiming the gospel message by which alone a world is to be saved and representing Christ before the world, devoting every capability and talent out of thankfulness that God gave His only Son for everlasting life. It includes ministry of the Word and preparing books for publication, laboring by voice and pen for conversion of souls, holding to God and following His instruction so His presence attends. Earnest efforts to reach people with truth and draw them to Christ are worthwhile and not in vain. Constant abounding joins active labor like Martha with learning at Jesus' feet like Mary who chose the better part that will never be taken away. Hands and heart and whole being are devoted to the work, especially watching over souls purchased with blood and watching for opportunities to do them good, having compassion on some and saving others with fear. This is reached only by much kneeling in sincere prayer, and it leaves no place for selfishness, since one fiber of its root left in the soul will spring up and defile many.

Abounding includes being pure, steadfast, unmovable, and always abounding in the love of Jesus as clean vessels leavened with Bible religion under the subduing, sanctifying, refining influence of truth as it is in Jesus, so that influence goes forth as light to the world. To be steadfast, unmovable, and always abounding now means working while it is day because the great day of God is near and the night comes when no man can work. It means cooperating with God and heavenly intelligences with unswerving fidelity, valuing God's favor, desiring His countenance, and longing to grow in grace and knowledge of Christ by keeping His Word close, being guided by it, being a doer of the Word, walking in the light while there is light, and watching unto prayer with the eye single to His glory. It refuses engrossing games and passion for supremacy and human speculations, and it faithfully renders tithes and offerings and takes God at His word, which brings blessing, strengthens faith, removes doubts, overbears fear with assurance, and gives strength to fight the Lord's battles with clear views of acceptance. In the great day of preparation this requires a people pure and stripped of self, firm and fully engaged, righteous, holy, and true in life rather than correct theory alone, whom God honors and joins with His power as He did Daniel in Babylon, lifting even the humblest trusting soul.

The Lord wants His people to walk closely with Him so they may always abound, with pride killed, mutual love, Christ's wisdom, childlike simplicity, openness to the Holy Spirit, much more faith and much less discouragement. Then every member becomes a living precious stone emitting light with wisdom, grace, peace, solid union, courage, and strength that speaks faith and praise. This orderly, steadfast, immovable faith takes the Bible as standard in inward meekness and quietness with outward peace and holiness, by which the church is established and made light to impart truth in power while keeping God's commandments in deed and truth as laborers together with God. This labor includes earnest wholehearted work in the cities by those talented for it even at personal sacrifice, with heaven's blessing resting on it and every believer having a definite work, where delay has changed many souls' experience. It includes establishing schools that train children in their mother tongue and quickly sending workers to labor perseveringly among foreign-language communities for a rich harvest.

It includes the persevering patient work of teachers in day schools and Sabbath schools in educating youth to love God, keep His commandments, follow the Shepherd, receive forgiveness and nobility of character restored to God's image and the Prince of peace. It includes missionary errands that keep the first sacred duty to care for and train one's own family without long separation or travel while feeling the worth of souls. It includes work to sympathize with and help an afflicted brother and his children bringing relief to parents in affliction. Students also apply the verse by showing through faithful words and actions that their teachers' efforts are not in vain. The work must continue with renewed energy even when faithful workers die and others grieve, for the conflict is brief and will end at Christ's coming, so those living must take up the work and uphold truth and Christ's honor.

Labor Not in Vain

Labor in the Lord is worthwhile and never wasted, and this assurance strengthens new believers to continue in faith and carry truth to others. Even preaching and personal labor done under handicap counts and bears fruit, as when speaking through a translator taxes strength and weakens delivery, because God Himself waters the sown seed and finishes what the human speaker cannot do. The proof appears when good is accomplished and hearers testify with solemn feeling and even weeping under a message on the final judgment, showing lasting results through divine power. Impressions made by preaching and testimonies of hearers give assurance that the work bears fruit even when effects are not fully apparent at the time, and hard labor in meetings for the church, including pointed testimony borne when the solemn power of God rests on the gathering, gives hope of lasting fruit rather than wasted effort.

Labor for the Lord is not in vain when God's Spirit and power work with it, for human knowledge and skill cannot change hearts or awaken need of a Saviour, and God alone gives the seed its life and growth. This calls for humble hope, living faith, and constant dependence on God's strength. Work united with divine power to reach the very depths of human woe and misery rests under God's rich blessing and still counts even when only a few accept grace, because one soul is so precious that Christ would have died for that one soul that it might live through the eternal ages.

Jesus remembers every good work and act of devotion, and self-sacrificing benevolent service offered in faith will be rewarded and is never too costly. Faithful wholehearted service is seen by God, who owns the world and commands heaven's resources and does not forget such service, and He provides what His servants need. Therefore service for the advancement of truth should go forward promptly and steadily, with willingness to make required sacrifices and trust in His provision.

Work done for the Lord in faith and hope has eternal results and brings the worker into fellowship with Christ and His faithful servants. Even humble unnoticed acts can bless others, with results unknown until the final reward, and believers are to do faithfully what God assigns without anxious concern about success. Such service blesses others and helps the worker grow into Christ's likeness, fitting for the work and joy of the life to come. This assurance supports overcoming spiritual laziness by actively working to help souls and advance God's cause.

Labor for the Lord is not wasted even when people refuse to listen, for efforts to bring them to Jesus and the knowledge of truth remain worthwhile. Such work also blesses those who do it, stirring and strengthening their spiritual powers and helping them work out their salvation. The souls Paul brought from darkness to eternal hope and peace were its fruit, and seeing them remain devoted strengthened him through trials and sufferings and made him rejoice in his work for their deliverance from spiritual bondage.

Distant work carried on amid discouragement, separation from familiar friends, and sacrifice of comforts has borne fruit, as seen in the work of the Van Horns in a distant field. Hard continuous labor at Canterbury brought people to the truth and awakened interest that would develop over time. Faithful work done under many discouragements is not wasted but bears fruit in hearts wrought upon by the Holy Spirit, with souls brought to keep the Sabbath and a plain house of worship raised for them.

Those who proclaimed the Advent message fulfilled God's purpose and their labor remained fruitful with reason for renewed hope and joy even though they misunderstood what event would occur. Their message was correct in its appointed purpose and God had led them, so their work gave reason to rejoice in hope.

Labor for those in the world longing for truth is not empty, for when converted they become intelligent helpers in the vineyard whose faith and works prove the worth of the effort put forth for them. The labors of men in responsible positions have lasting worth when wholly transformed by Christ's grace. People who use strength in obedience and work diligently can trust provision through the earth and its harvest, for devoting heart, mind, and strength to doing God's will, cutting off harmful habits, and planting seed in thoroughly prepared soil succeeds because God who gives rain, sunshine, powers, and the world for human benefit sustains the worker, causes the harvest to grow, and provides food even in the wilderness.

Sincere, hard, self-denying labor is assured reward, for every deed is weighed and the faithful receive in proportion to entrusted gifts. Daily lifework is bound up with the second advent and searching judgment when Christ reckons with servants, requires results proportionate to talents, accurately estimates by God's scales, and gives every faithful Christian a proportionate reward safe from human misjudgment since all judgment is given to Christ who makes no mistake. This calls to remain steadfast in overcoming by resisting the enemy, drawing near to God, taking up the cross, and following Christ even against natural inclination. Those who seek God wholeheartedly with humble earnest purpose to follow Christ, become partakers of the divine nature, keep increasing without weariness, and labor in faith and humility holding fast His promises free from self-sufficiency will prevail and be given the greatness of the kingdom under heaven, blessed with an influence of the prayer of faith as far-reaching as eternity.

How Faithfulness Is Formed

Steadfast, immovable, always abounding service is the condition of God's children when they yearn after entire conformity to His will, after His holiness and peace. That yearning is satisfied as they receive Christ and are born of God, not by blood nor by human will, receiving of His fullness grace for grace. Looking constantly to Jesus with the eye of faith, feeding upon His word, and receiving new birth opens the eyes of the understanding to see the doctrines and truths of the Word. By the transforming efficacy of His grace they are strengthened and established, and while resting in His love they continue firm and unshaken and always active in the work of the Lord.

Firmness also comes through prompt use of entrusted talents in presenting truth to souls in error and darkness. Freely imparting what has been freely received gives clearer spiritual perception, practical and experimental knowledge of truth, and a greatly strengthened soul. Meeting objections and opposition drives closer investigation of the Scriptures and earnest seeking, asking, and knocking that Christ promised to reward. The result is clearer light and firmer establishment in the faith.

A tempted and tried believer stays steadfast, unmovable, and always abounding by keeping the eye constantly fixed on Jesus, finding rest in Christ alone and refusing to yoke with the enemy. This means doing all to the glory of God, giving no offense, watching, standing fast in the faith, and being strong. Hope as a sure and steadfast anchor of the soul, entering within the veil where Christ the Forerunner has entered, makes the tempest-tossed soul a partaker of the divine nature, anchored in Christ to outride the storm of temptation without being driven on the rocks or drawn into the whirlpool. The mightiest power to stand is received by looking to Jesus the Author and Finisher of faith and by binding life up with His life. So the believer boldly yet humbly says the Lord is helper, will not be moved from steadfastness, and will live because Christ lives, instead of dishonoring God with faithless unbelief like sinking Peter.

All are to walk humbly with God in the way of the Lord by engaging in His service and persevering in well-doing with much prayer. Those who do so are not left in uncertainty but grow in confidence in the wisdom of God's leading, and become firm, settled, unmovable, and fully abundant in the work of the Lord. The Lord abundantly rewards such faithful perseverance and is well pleased with obedience to all His requirements. Keeping the Word of God close by and being guided by it makes a person wise, steadfast, immovable, and always abounding, which in the last days requires watching unto prayer with the eye single to the glory of God. That watchfulness refuses engrossing games and the burning passion for supremacy that cause losing sight of God's way and purposes and substitute human speculations and inventions for His revealed will.

All who talk faith and encourage faith are given faith, and increasing faith, that will not waver but remains steadfast and immovable. This condition is reached through less talk about things of no profit and much more talk of Jesus and the Word of life, which gives spiritual enlightenment and great joy in the soul. It comes from studying Daniel, Revelation, and the other prophecies of the Old and New Testaments, praying for light in the home, and letting the Holy Spirit shine upon the sacred page to open understanding to know what is truth. Walking in the fear of the Lord with full respect for all His counsels and choosing right instead of wrong even when the outlook is dark causes influence to be felt and leads the Lord to make multitudes to be at peace with such a person. Seeing God's goodness in blocking the way that would have led to embarrassment then leads to giving honor and glory to His holy name.

God calls believers to be steadfast, immovable, and always abounding in faith and love. Those who seek the Lord will find Him precious to their souls. Being steadfast requires seeking the Lord, clearing away self and the rubbish of self from the door of the heart, and letting Jesus in. Piled-up self keeps the Saviour from entering.

Accountability to God and high privilege as His children are lived out in daily service in newness of life and gladness instead of murmuring and sorrow. It means remaining firm and fully given to the work while knowing that access to the throne of grace is open and that names are written in the Lamb's book of life. Serving the heavenly Father every day with newness of life and gladness brings the experienced reality that the joy of the Lord gives strength.

Readiness for the scenes that will soon open requires stopping worry and discouraging talk about others and keeping looking to Jesus for faith. It means breaking the spell, having the mind renewed and the character reformed so that thoughts, words, and deeds show that God's miracle-working power has transformed the whole person. After that change it means keeping praying, watching, and working, never falling back into the past worldly condition, letting efforts of preparation never flag in order to meet Jesus in peace when He comes and be made like Him. Such watchful, prayerful, working labor carries the blessed assurance that it is not in vain in the Lord. The way to be brought to God through Christ is accepting the obligation to obey the law and being renewed in the spirit of the mind, because no one who continues to transgress can be accepted.

Being firmly connected with God gives courage in the Lord and certainty that work for Him has lasting value. As wars, religious oppression, and times of perplexity come, believers are to look away from men to the Redeemer and lift up their heads because redemption draws near. There is then no fear, no hanging down of heart and hands, no dread of the task as drudgery, and no discouragement for lack of appreciation. Faithfulness to God makes a person faithful to fellow men, and an unselfish heart joined to God produces unselfish purpose and steadfast labor.
