The instruction belongs to direction given for dealing with serious wrongdoing in the Corinthian church. The letter laid open the evil course being followed there so that its members might repent and take action against those whose immoral conduct brought disgrace upon the church.
The gathering together described is to be serious and disciplined when sexual sin is in question. One who breaks the seventh commandment is to be suspended from church fellowship and its privileges, not restored merely because he confesses and expresses sorrow. Treating this sin lightly brings God's displeasure upon the church and does harm to the young.
