Brethren, let every man, wherein he is called, therein abide with God.
Brethren, let every man abide with God in the place and work and calling in which he was called, remaining faithful to Him in those circumstances and in that situation rather than leaving them to find Him elsewhere. A lowly place, even servitude, is no barrier to glorifying God, for obedience and faithfulness in daily duties bear witness to the power of truth. Humble tasks no less than the labors of those entrusted with exceptional gifts become service to Christ when done in love for God, and no one is without work to do for Him.
Faithfulness in the calling includes common labor and lowly stations, so that a businessperson glorifies God by upright conduct and a mechanic represents Christ by diligent work. Carrying faith into every task allows others to see the spirit of Christ and be led to glorify their Creator and Redeemer. Ordinary work and everyday relationships can themselves be lived with God, turning the lot of life into a school of divine truth.
Useful labor is meant to keep the Creator and Redeemer continually in mind and to picture His work of grace in the heart. Instead of absorbing the mind and causing forgetfulness of God, toil rightly used teaches divine truth and trains the worker upward into the purity and image of Christ. For those called to medical missionary work this abiding means serving persons of every rank as servants of God, seeking only to do His will where He has placed them.
For capable Black ministers this abiding means giving earnest effort to save their own people rather than counting labor for white people as their calling. That appointment gives no warrant for shutting them out of white gatherings or for refusing them membership in the same churches with white believers.
