A Believer Weighs Meat Offered to Idolsby emmanuel_higgins

1 Corinthians 8:8

But meat commendeth us not to God: for neither, if we eat, are we the better; neither, if we eat not, are we the worse.

Eating a particular food does not commend a person to God, for eating does not make one better before Him and abstaining does not make one worse. The question at stake was whether eating such food altered one's standing with God. That question of food, including meat that had been offered to idols, belonged to the larger dispute over what should be required of Gentile converts. The dispute arose because Jewish and Gentile believers held sharply different customs about food, extending even to whether blood might be eaten.
