1 Corinthians 9:17

For if I do this thing willingly, I have a reward: but if against my will, a dispensation of the gospel is committed unto me.

To have a dispensation of the gospel committed to oneself is to be entrusted with a responsibility to carry it to others. Everyone converted to Christ receives this stewardship toward others, devoting time, money, talents, and influence to winning souls. Those who turn to Christ are entrusted with this work especially for people of their own class.

Converts from the influential, world-focused class, including those once devoted to gaining wealth, feel a special burden to reach that neglected class of their own. They consecrate their time and money to God and use their talent and influence to advance the truth, strengthen the church, spread the truth, and become channels for its light. Paul illustrated willing service under this stewardship, for though he had the right to receive support for preaching, he gave it up among the Corinthians and worked with his hands so no one would suspect him of preaching for gain. By this he removed a possible cause of distrust that would weaken the message.
