1 Corinthians 9:4

Have we not power to eat and to drink?

The verse belongs to Paul's discourse in 1 Corinthians 9:1-19 on the Christian ministry and its support. It asks whether Paul and his fellow workers have the right to receive food and drink in return for their ministry. Beyond asking that question, the verse itself gives no further explanation of that right. It affirms that those who preach the gospel have a right to receive material support, including food and drink.

That right belongs to men called to give their whole time to labor for souls, who constitute the Christian ministry, to be supported from the gospel. Their support is in the same manner as those who ministered about sacred things and waited at the altar lived from the temple tithes. The Lord ordained that those who proclaim the gospel should live of the gospel. The duty to support gospel workers applies the principle of the law's provision for those charged with God's work. The duty of tithe-paying is as binding on Christians since Christ as it was on those who lived before Christ.
