1 Corinthians 9:6

Or I only and Barnabas, have not we power to forbear working?

Paul and Barnabas possessed as ministers of the gospel the right to refrain from secular and manual work as a means of supporting themselves and to receive support for their ministry. Paul nevertheless at times chose not to exercise that right but labored at a trade to provide for his own needs.

In Corinth he relinquished that right lest suspicion of financial motives weaken the force of his preaching. There during the week he worked at his trade together with Aquila and Priscilla, while on the Sabbaths he taught in the synagogue.
