1 John 1:5
This then is the message which we have heard of him, and declare unto you, that God is light, and in him is no darkness at all. This then is the message which we have heard of him, and declare unto you, that God is light, and in him is no darkness at all.
God is perfect light with no darkness in Him at all, and Jesus Christ is that same light, one with Him as Creator, Truth, Way and Life, shining amid moral darkness.
This was heard from Christ Himself by eyewitnesses who saw and handled the living Word, and it is to be declared positively and with certainty so hearers may have fellowship with the Father and the Son and have full joy.
To claim fellowship with Him while walking in darkness is to lie and not live the truth, but to walk in the light as He is in the light brings fellowship with one another and cleansing from all sin through the blood of Jesus when sins are confessed.
Walking in the light means being born anew as children of light, obeying all His commandments, loving one another, and doing right from a pure heart, for hatred of a brother proves the profession false.
Those who stay connected to Him become channels that reflect His character to others in good works, and those who trust Him in trial do not remain in discouragement and darkness but have the light of life with hope and strength.
Message Heard and Declared
The report passed on is one actually heard from Christ himself by eyewitnesses who heard, saw with the eyes, looked upon and handled the Word of life, in whom life and eternal life with the Father was manifested and witnessed. It is to be declared positively without hesitation, with earnestness, authority and certainty, not with lips merely but in life. The simplicity of the announcement sets before real men and women true practical godliness and contact with a real living God, showing what God is doing and what man must do to meet His requirements.
It is declared so that hearers may have fellowship with the witnesses and with the Father and with His Son Jesus Christ, and may have full joy. That joy is union and communion with God as the life of the soul, a genuine daily experience of the plain Thus saith the Lord that bears fruit in unity and fellowship with one another and with Christ, in walking in knowledge of the truth, partaking of the divine nature, and walking humbly with God. It calls for singleness of purpose because time to work is short, with wisdom from Christ who is sanctification and righteousness, and God's personal word, Faithful in that which is least, is of more value than gold or silver or precious stones.
The truth declared today is the same unchanged truth from the beginning, heard, seen with eyes, looked upon and handled, of the Word of life, for the life was manifested and seen and witnessed as the eternal life which was with the Father. It confirms Old and New Testament teaching, was brought to the apostles' remembrance by the Holy Spirit as Christ promised, and has come down through the ages with light from heaven that stands the test of investigation, received as lessons from the same Instructor. The disciples had Christ, the Light of the world, among them but did not fully understand the truth He taught until the Spirit illuminated His words and brought them to remembrance.
John wrote it in old age, nearly one hundred years old, as a firm, decided, stirring, glad testimony to hold young believers to Christ when persecution endangered their faith. Having seen the light he could not keep silent but continued to speak of what he had seen and heard even in old age, repeating over and over the story of the crucified and risen Saviour and revealing the life of Christ in his own life. Like him, tried pioneer workers and aged workers who have stood faithful amid storm and trial, witnessed and borne testimony to the truth, still have a valuable part in sharing it, and notwithstanding many infirmities can still bear witness for Him and make this apostolic testimony their personal testimony.
The message belongs to the present time and to those in responsible positions and to brethren in responsible positions, and its plain truths belong especially to those living in the last days. It is a time when sin must be called by its right name, calling all to beware the character of their work, to fall into line for their own souls and others, to walk in the light, and to hold fast the faith and the truths given for the past fifty years with the demonstration of the Holy Spirit and to be indelibly impressed on minds. It exposes unconverted men who seek their own glory by presenting new theories as truth that deny what God has given, lest minds be led into confusion by Scripture misused to support error, and it requires the love of Christ in the heart rather than mere beautiful theories.
God Is Wholly Light
God is light, perfect light, wholly light with no darkness in Him at all. He reigns in light above where is perfect day, and light signifies His presence, revelation, truth, love, holiness, power, efficiency, and resources as Maker and Ruler in heaven. He is never bound by circumstances, and His light is not distributed through nature in leaves, roots, and trees. To claim fellowship with this God of light while walking in darkness is false, but walking in the light as He is in the light brings fellowship with one another and cleansing from all sin by the blood of Jesus Christ His Son.
Christ is that light, wholly light with no darkness in Him at all. He is one with God, the Creator who brought light from darkness, the spiritual light revealed to Israel through symbols, types, and prophecy yet shining upon every soul. He is the Light of the world, the Truth, the Way, the Life, the divine Teacher and Author and Finisher of faith under whose control are the events of ages, in whom all fullness dwells. Those who follow Him receive the light of life and are renewed in His image and called from darkness to marvelous light.
Shining is His very work, revelation shining amid moral darkness. To those who receive Him He is everything, their Comforter, safety, healthfulness, manna and spiritual dew. Apart from Him there is no light at all, while those who love not the light because their deeds are evil refuse to come to be delivered from evil's power. Every needy soul may come without grudging, learn to bear His yoke, let no cloud remain, be flooded with bright beams of righteousness, and take the water of life freely.
Darkness never comes from God at all. As shade exists only because of light yet is not created by the sun but by an obstruction blocking it, so spiritual darkness is caused by an intruding object coming between the soul and God. This explains why people did not understand Christ's words and why His followers meet the same incomprehension.
The simplicity of the statement shows depth, not shallowness, setting before real men and women true practical godliness and bringing them into contact with a real, living God. It shows what God is doing and what man must do to meet God's requirements. It is definite knowledge God wants people to have, to be received in its simple sense by trusting God rather than human wisdom. His requirements in His Word are clear and His claims on life and service can be fully appreciated, so mistakes in the religious life need not be made. Divine ideas replace human inventions and illuminate the mind, while reliance on human wisdom and powers obscures His glory.
Fellowship Truth and Cleansing
To claim fellowship with the God who is light while walking in darkness is to lie and not do the truth, failing to speak, act, and live truthfully. His character as wholly light is the standard for fellowship, exposing shameful conduct in contrast to sin. Walking in the light as He is in the light brings fellowship with one another and cleansing from all sin by the blood of Jesus Christ His Son. As God by grace dwells in the believer, darkness passes away.
If sins are confessed, He is faithful and just to forgive sins and to cleanse from all unrighteousness. To say there is no sin is self-deception with the truth not in us. To say there has been no sin makes Him a liar with His word not in us.
Belief in Christ as personal Saviour is the only salvation provided for sinners made aliens from God by sin. Christ died to make atonement, an argument that cannot be refuted, Yea and Amen to the repentant soul. He now stands at the Father's right hand pleading for believers, and His intercession prevails with power to take away sins. He leads the penitent soul upward step by step and gives peace to the mind, while angels guard the believing soul so evil angels cannot intrude. To all who receive Him He gives power to become sons of God, and because He lives to make intercession those obedient to His will are kept by Him from falling so they shall live as He lives.
The first chapter gives the understanding needed for the second chapter about sinning not, Christ as Advocate and propitiation for the sins of the world, knowing God by keeping His commandments, love perfected in keeping His word, and walking as Christ walked. This experience is joined to turning from sin as transgression of the law through Him who was manifested to take away sin and to destroy the works of the devil.
Walking in the Light
God's children are children of light, renewed in His image and called out of darkness into His marvelous light to follow Jesus as the light of the world and walk in the light of life and not in darkness. Their calling and character and prospects are peculiar, at variance with the world in every age in spirit and practice, distinguishing and separating them as chosen and elect and precious and heavenly rather than earthly, builded together for a habitation of God through the Spirit with Jesus abiding in them and they in Him. The difference between the children of light and the children of darkness is most decided, and as the close of time nears the demarcation grows more decided and the variance greater. That difference means being born again, created anew in Christ, dead to the world and alive unto God, leaving no room for idols and no place for concord with Belial or friendship with the world, and the closer Christ is imitated the more the enemy pursues, yet nearness to Christ strengthens against being drawn away.
Walking in the light is deliberate choice through thought and will to represent Christ in character, beholding Jesus and becoming like Him as the pattern. It is walking uprightly and by faith and in the Spirit and in truth and love and in newness of life and in holiness and reverence, putting away gloom and self-focus, forgetting self, speaking with hope, and making continual spiritual progress to help the perishing and encourage others by good works.
It is individually seeking the Lord, humbling the proud heart, seeing and confessing defects of character and sins, obeying the truth and all the commandments of God and keeping His word just as it reads until He reveals Himself as a sin-pardoning Saviour who receives the helpless soul and gives a rock-firm conception of truth with Christ formed within as the hope of glory. Walking contrary to the commandments, hating the brother, wrestling the Scriptures to suit disobedience, and reproaching His messengers is walking in darkness, while claiming fellowship while so walking is lying and not doing the truth. Accountability is according to light received, and everyone is obligated to strive for mastery over self rather than be led by inclination or selfish desire, cleansing the sanctuary of the soul of all unrighteousness so testimony is light and evil surmising and evil speaking are put away.
Religion is more than talk, for Christ's righteousness appears in right actions and good works from pure unselfish motives, while outward righteousness without inward goodness is useless and those without His light and love are not His children. To walk in that light is to gather light and not darkness to the soul, giving a divine similitude and perfect model by which character and conversation are fashioned. Companionship is kept pure and holy and conversation spiritual upon truth and righteousness in a pure holy atmosphere, with clearness to discern true valuable traits in others, practicing lofty principles as laborers together with God and moral representatives of Christ with life hid with Christ in God, since each person's influence affects others for good or loss and departure into judging and unholy surmising and evil speaking and false witness shows the fountain of the heart is not pure.
Fellowship with God cannot be separated from fellowship with one another, for those who have fellowship with Him show it in love for Jesus and for one another, with Christ's love in the heart expressed in loving action and love for the brother marking abiding in the light. Claiming to be in the light while hating a brother, lacking love, holding bitter feelings, refusing to harmonize, standing at swords' point over conflicting ideas, and rejecting through prejudice and passion the light and message God may be sending through a brother proves the profession false and leaves the soul in darkness. Want of love extinguishes spiritual light, a warning for present believers and for Seventh-day Adventist churches especially when the Lord sends a special message and the confederacy of evil works through prejudice to keep the word of truth from those who should receive it. Confession and acknowledgment of sin belongs to this same walking, bringing faithful and just forgiveness and cleansing from all unrighteousness by the blood of Jesus.
This truth is proclaimed by a life shaped by study of His Word, for the one who studies receives help and strength from communion with the Word, is sanctified in thought and word and deed, and feels sacred responsibility to impart what is received. So revealing God to others, all that is said and done declares His light and the study becomes life and salvation to associates.
Reflecting Light to Others
Declaring the message is not done with lips merely but in life, by being the light of the world and letting light shine before men in good works that lead others to glorify the Father in heaven. Union and communion with God is the life of the soul, not beautiful words without meaning but a genuine daily experience that makes joy full, and those who have this union with Christ declare it in spirit and word and work. Profession is nothing unless good fruit is manifest in word and work, for unity and fellowship with one another and with Christ is the fruit borne on every branch of the living vine. The cleansed soul, born again, bears the message as a clear, distinct testimony with unfaltering accents that God is light and in Him is no darkness at all. The Spirit's sanctifying work becomes visible in the way a person lives, in thoughts, words, and deeds that reflect that God is light and has no darkness.
One who stays closely connected to God with His Spirit dwelling in the heart becomes a channel of light to others. When people connect with Him as the source of peace, light, and truth, His Spirit flows through them to refresh and bless those around them. Without that living connection with God there is no light from heaven to reflect to the world or to share. God continually imparts light to His followers, with new truths from His word continuing to unfold, so that the Reformation's work continues throughout world history.
Christians reflect His light by showing the purity and holiness of His character, making visible the character of Christ, the Light of the world, in whom there is no darkness at all. Each step of faith and obedience brings the soul into closer connection with Him. Keeping Him continually in view fills the life with light, brings peace, and changes character, and the light received from Him is reflected to others through practical obedience. Walking in the light as Christ is in the light enables believers to reflect that light to people in moral darkness, so their words and actions show that they are in the light.
God does not want His people to walk in darkness and perplexity and confusion but to know the truth as it is in Jesus and to proclaim that truth wherever they go, revealing Jesus to the world both by word of mouth and by life practice. Christ reveals this light to the world, and without His light the world would be in darkness. His clear truth and perfect obedience display God's character and the obedience God requires. The sanctuary lamp represented God's church giving light to the world, and Israel was meant to represent the great light, shining as a light to the Gentiles and as Israel's glory, a light that was never to become extinct, for Christ even in His humiliation possessed all things and was that light.
Directing the mind to Him who guides and controls all things allows the light to shine, the light of the glory of God as it shines in the face of Jesus Christ. Every fresh display of the conviction of the grace of God upon unbelievers brings souls to a knowledge of the truth and lets that light shine. To newly converted souls Christ is manna and spiritual dew, and as men of spiritual understanding conduct Bible studies with them telling them how to yield to the power of the Holy Spirit, they are fully and firmly established in the truth and the power of God is revealed. Many souls in places still unentered would rejoice in that light if those places were worked as they should be.
The message is to be declared as known truth spoken by God, with earnestness, positiveness, persuasive entreaty, authority, and certainty, in short pointed preaching that keeps the Bible before hearers, speaks what is known and true, presses them to decision, fellowship with the Father and the Son, full joy, and walking in the light, rejecting a formal or apathetic manner. Every professed Christian is to bear testimony to it in the love revealed in the gift of the Saviour to redeem fallen man, glorifying God's name in the world, as an uplifting testimony grounded in knowing God and Christ and walking in the light. As the soul takes it in more and more fully there will be renewed daily expressions of thanksgiving and praise from converted sanctified lips, receiving Christ Jesus, walking in His footsteps, and becoming more Christlike in character day by day. Every soul accountable to God is to maintain singleness of purpose because time to work is short, with wisdom from Christ who is sanctification and righteousness, walking in the knowledge of the truth and partaking of the divine nature and walking humbly with God in the light as He is in the light, having fellowship one with another. To say there is fellowship with Him and walk in darkness is to lie and not do the truth, while walking in the light brings cleansing from all sin through the blood of Jesus Christ His Son, and if sins are confessed He is faithful and just to forgive sins and cleanse from all unrighteousness, whereas to say there is no sin is self-deception with the truth not in us, and to say there has been no sin makes Him a liar with His word not in us, calling for a genuine experience of the plain Thus saith the Lord without crowding the mind with variety, for God's personal word Faithful in that which is least is of more value than gold or silver or precious stones.
Hope Amid Present Darkness
God delivers from discouragement and the bondage of darkness and sets feet in a large place, so those who trust Him do not walk in darkness but have the light of life. Streams of light come from the heavenly Father, and His presence illuminates, while living active faith, even trembling faith grasping His promise, penetrates and breaks the cloud of darkness to let gleamings of glory through. He is light and the fullness of light with no darkness in Him at all, giving reason to hope when sin has cast a dark shadow and work constantly meets difficulties. His light shines through the clouds that darken the way in precious promises pledging divine guidance to lead the blind by a way they did not know, to make darkness light and crooked things straight, and to give the light of life to those who follow Christ.
The response is to look heavenward to Him in faith rather than looking at appearances with fretting, worrying, complaining, scolding, and sickly enfeebled faith when difficulty and pressure come. He holds light together with power and efficiency, is rich in resources as Maker and owner of the world, and is never bound by circumstances or bound about. He will open heaven to reveal His wholly light character with nothing dark in Him. He blesses everyone placed where they can communicate His light and love to others by patient, kind, compassionate, tender training of youth and by earnest cheerful work with much prayer.
Darkness is unbelief, discouragement, and hopelessness, and it is opposed to Christ who is light with no darkness at all in Him. Those who gather to meet the Lord must not give place to its power in discouraging and hopeless speech, nor encourage distrust which grieves the Holy Spirit. Meeting Him means facing His light, talking faith, praying in faith, and speaking with faith and hope of God's goodness and His love and power rather than giving way to complaint or despair. It means turning from looking at darkness toward Him to praise God and thereby glorify His name, and bearing a message that turns people away from darkness to Him. His light brings hope and strength to those who look to Him and trust Him.
Christ is a present help in every time of need, Himself the leader, so His people should not live in unbelief or under a cloud but as children of light renewed in His image should follow Him and walk in the light of life. His light shines on the path of those who obey His commands and keep His word, and His strength sustains them as they become more Christlike, lifting them from the low level where sin left them to the highest heights of grace, growing from strength to strength without following human leading. Each believer can give clear proof of completeness in Him by walking in the brightness of His presence, even when others professing Christianity dishonor Him in thought, word, and deed. Walking in the light means no longer walking in darkness and doubt but individually seeking the Lord, humbling the proud heart, seeing and confessing defects of character and sins, obeying the truth and all the commandments of God, and refusing to let go until He reveals Himself as sin-pardoning Saviour who receives the helpless soul. Then He gives the blessing pleaded for and a clear conception of truth that holds firm as a rock in testing time, with Christ formed within as the hope of glory. The closer He is imitated the more the enemy pursues, but nearness to Him strengthens resistance against being drawn away.
Trust in Him gives love, grace, and power to meet and rebuke the powers of darkness while the world fills up the measure of its iniquity. Keeping the way of the Lord means looking to Jesus as Author and Finisher of faith, believing and trusting in Him and beholding Him as Light of the world. He is to be praised with lips that speak no discouraging word but talk faith and courage, tell of His love, and declare His wonderful works.
To newly converted souls Christ in whom is no darkness is spiritual nourishment, refreshment, manna, and spiritual dew, and as people are brought to know the truth the light of God's glory shines in the face of Jesus Christ. He is One in whom all fullness dwells, the source of light, comfort, safety, and spiritual health, and apart from Him there is no light at all. He came to give more abundant life and to deliver from the power of evil all who will come to Him as Burden-bearer for help and rest. Every needy soul that feels need, hungers and thirsts for righteousness, opens the door of the heart wide for His entrance, and carries perplexities, griefs, and burdens to Him in prayer is received without grudging, helped, strengthened, and filled. His great heart of love longs to flood the soul with the bright beams of His righteousness, so that all who thirst may come and take the water of life freely with no cloud remaining between the soul and Jesus. His righteousness is offered abundantly to those who receive Him by living faith, not grudgingly or in a mere taste, and those who receive freely are to give freely. With sadness He sees some who love not the light and will not come to the light because their deeds are evil and who will not come to be delivered from evil's power.
God is wholly light and entirely without darkness, standing opposed to Satan's deceptions and the spiritual darkness that has taken the place of light in the last days. Satan goes forth to deceive those who do not read God's Word nor practice its truths, and unless the light is heeded the darkness of spiritual night will settle down. Faith must take hold of the light shining beyond satanic deception, with the Word of God as stronghold and defense. God has led His people out of the world away from its maxims and fashions and principles and has given them truth to practice in daily life, bringing connection with Christ who knew no sin and in whom no guile was found, and the way to obtain eternal life is plainly stated in John chapter six.
The cross settles the question of God's character as truth and light with no darkness in Him, displaying His hatred of sin fully consistent with His love for sinners, a love stronger than death. His holiness and His law are not evidence against His love, though Satan's rebellion seeks to make them appear so. Denial of that love began a great apostasy, while the gift of Christ reveals His love and provides fallen people a way to return to loyalty to Him. Christ's death for His sheep and His gift of His flesh for the life of the world reveal divine power mighty to save completely.
God lives in light and has no darkness in Him, so seeking to commune with Him is answered by floods of outward light as a symbol of His spiritual presence. A church built with large high windows should therefore be bathed in light, and leaving its blinds closed contradicts that presence. Dim religious light fits only a place meant for mourning and confessing sins and repenting in sackcloth and ashes. A place where people gather to rejoice and offer thanksgiving and praise should be well lighted, because light promotes gladness and therefore health of body and soul.
