1 John 1:7
But if we walk in the light, as he is in the light, we have fellowship one with another, and the blood of Jesus Christ his Son cleanseth us from all sin. But if we walk in the light, as he is in the light, we have fellowship one with another, and the blood of Jesus Christ his Son cleanseth us from all sin.
If believers walk in the light as God is in the light, they have fellowship with one another and the blood of Jesus Christ cleanses them from all sin. To walk in the light is to live in the truth as it is in Jesus, following in Christ's footsteps and keeping His commandments and His Word in daily obedience. That walk brings unity as children of God, for love for fellow believers shows one is in the light while hatred and evil-speaking show one remains in darkness. The cleansing rests on God giving His Son as propitiation, whose shed blood alone removes every repented and forsaken sin, even scarlet sin, and purifies the heart from selfishness. It is received by contrite confession, repentance and faith in Christ as personal Saviour, with complete surrender and daily advance as more light comes.
Text and Eyewitness Context
If believers walk in the light as God is in the light, they have fellowship with one another, and the blood of Jesus Christ His Son cleanses them from all sin. Walking in the light means living in the truth rather than in darkness, coming out of darkness into a higher place into the presence of God instead of staying in the dark and mourning over it. It means walking in the footsteps of Christ, coming to God confessing sins and believing His promise to cleanse from all unrighteousness. Confession and reformation remove what divides believers, while Christ forgives and cleanses them from sin and from the accumulated effects of human devising that foster alienation and strife. His sacrifice is the reality to which the sacrificial offerings pointed.
God is light and in Him is no darkness at all, so to claim fellowship with Him while walking in darkness is to lie and not do the truth. True fellowship belongs with living in God's light and receiving Christ's cleansing, and walking in darkness while claiming fellowship with God is false. To say there is no sin is to deceive oneself and to leave the truth out, and to say there has been no sin is to make God a liar and to leave His word out. Confessing sins brings faithful and just forgiveness and cleansing from all unrighteousness. Christ's death is an argument that cannot be refuted and is Yea and Amen to the repentant soul, leading the penitent upward step by step and giving peace to the mind, with angels guarding the penitent believing soul so evil angels cannot intrude.
The verse belongs to testimony about Christ, the Word of life from the beginning who was heard, seen with eyes, looked upon and handled, the life manifested, the eternal life which was with the Father and was manifested. That witness was declared and written so hearers may have fellowship with the witnesses in their fellowship with the Father and with His Son Jesus Christ, that joy may be full. The declared witness comes down through the ages so that those now living may share that same fellowship and full joy. It is a word to be repeated to brethren in responsible positions, joined to confessing sin rather than saying there is no sin or there has been no sin. The first chapter must be read to understand the second, where Christ is set forth as advocate and propitiation.
The verse is the stirring, firm, decided testimony of John written when he was an old man nearly one hundred years old. It shows how God can use aged workers, for John revealed the life of Christ in his own life and repeated over and over the story of the crucified and risen Saviour as the same glad message of fellowship with the Father and with His Son. That repeating held young believers steady when persecution put them in danger of losing their hold on Christ. John's message in old age shows that this truth remains the testimony of faithful servants who have seen and heard of the life manifested in Christ.
Aged believers with many infirmities still have reason to praise God that they can continue to bear witness for Him. Aged faithful ministers share John's work and can speak his words from their own experience. Aged standard-bearers who hold fast and are faithful to the end are not useless and laid aside. The Lord will give them a crown of life that fadeth not away.
The verse expresses true practical godliness in simplest language that holds depth, bringing real men and women into contact with a real, living God. It shows what God is doing and what man must do to meet God's requirements, spoken positively and decidedly. It is to be read simply as instruction for trusting God and walking in the light of His Word to guide practical life. The promise is especially appropriate for a time when sin must be called by its right name, warning all to consider the character of their work and fall into line for the sake of their own souls and the souls of others. That call stands against seeking one's own glory by starting on a new track, originating new theories that deny truth given for the past fifty years, using Scripture to support error, bringing confusion, and leading away from truths to be indelibly impressed on minds so they hold fast to the faith. It is given in love as a firm warning to those who break the law of God while claiming to live without sin, exposing their fearful deception. To walk in the light as God is in the light is to be washed from all sin by the blood of Jesus Christ as God's Son, revealing power in God's plans as the divine remedy embraced when true converting power comes home to human agents, standing as the sure word of prophecy to be relied upon wholly and unmistakably.
Meaning of Walking in Light
Walking in the light means living in the truth rather than in darkness, knowing the truth as it is in Jesus and making it known by life, letting truth shine through holiness and practicing its principles until the soul is filled with peace. It means coming out of darkness into a higher place into God's presence instead of staying in the dark mourning over it, coming to God confessing sins and believing His promise to cleanse from all unrighteousness. True religion here is shown not in outward righteousness or mere claim of fellowship but in right actions and good works arising from pure, unselfish motives in the light and love of God.
Walking in the light as He is in the light means walking in the footsteps of Christ and following His example, receiving Christ and His Word together and obeying them in perfect harmony on a sure open path. Living where God is, where there is no darkness at all, gives fellowship and full joy, while claiming fellowship while living in darkness is lying and not doing the truth. This walk is entered by trusting Christ and holding fast to Him by faith and following where He leads, because He satisfied the claims of the law, bore the curse, offered His life, and brought in everlasting righteousness.
Walking in the light means deliberately choosing with thought and will to represent Christ in gracious character and to keep making spiritual progress by faith, in the Spirit, in truth, in love, and in newness of life. It means putting away gloom and self-focus and living uprightly rather than merely claiming to be a child of God, encouraging and strengthening others and letting Christ's goodness shine through the life while perfecting holiness in reverence for God. It is decisive and urgent, a matter of life or death with time short, not hesitating and unreliable with a flickering light that bewilders others, but seeking God day and night, putting on the robe of Christ's righteousness, and yielding soul, body, and spirit to God.
Walking denotes active effort as a learner in the school of Christ pressing toward the mark for the prize, exercising faith so it will increase and growing in grace and in knowledge of the truth. Believers cannot remain dwarfed in Bible knowledge or in religious life but must grow up to the full stature of men and women in Christ Jesus, knowing more truth tomorrow than today. Heaven is full of light and strength to draw from by living faith, and God pours blessing as soon as people draw nigh to Him and grasp His promises, a progress by which young people turning their minds to heavenly things become able to lead sinners to Christ.
Christ is the light of the world, and those who follow Him will not walk in darkness but go from strength to strength and from light to greater light with the light of truth illuminating their footsteps. The thought of Christ's life inspires effort to grow continually in grace and knowledge until complete in Him with His righteousness and not one's own, in contrast to seeking heaven by one's own righteousness which makes no progress. Such a spiritual life of love, forbearance, patience, longsuffering and self-denial like the Saviour's helps those around and wins others to the new and living way, for Christ as the Way, the Truth, and the Life stands opposed to all error as the great source from which all truth radiates.
Walking in the light means maintaining singleness of purpose because time to work is short, seeking the wisdom that comes from Christ who is sanctification and righteousness, walking humbly with God in knowledge of the truth as a partaker of the divine nature, and constantly improving the mind to comprehend and do the plain Thus saith the Lord. It means wholehearted devotion to God turning from love of the world and its ways, with God giving His Spirit to those who strive, live, and believe for it so they can walk in the light and share in His love and fullness. It brings the fellowship of love which only the Spirit of God who reigns in light above can give, for darkness is passed away because that light of perfect day has shone upon the walker, making the path bright though thorny because God by grace dwells in him, and God Himself is light.
Walking in the light means living in God's light and love shown in right actions from pure motives, living as in God's sight where hereditary tendencies and natural inclinations cannot bring peace because they lead away from God. It means reflecting Jesus, who is light with no darkness in Him, being renewed in His image and called out of darkness into His light to represent Him and live by the light of life. When Christ lives in the person, that person walks as Christ does, leaves a bright path toward heaven, becomes a lightbearer dispelling darkness, and testifies before the world, angels and men that truth has power to transform character and cause men to represent Christ.
Walking in the light is living in Christ rather than gathering darkness and gloom, receiving brightness and the blessing of the Sun of Righteousness in the heart with healing in His beams. It is living in living connection with the Source of light so true followers do not travel uncertainly stumbling in darkness, but become the light of the world. As the sun rising dispels mist and glorifies the heavens and gives life chasing night from valleys and hills, Christians by good works, cheerfulness and courage reflect the Sun of Righteousness, so that before consistent lives ignorance, superstition and darkness pass away as they disseminate truth until the pathway of those in darkness is illuminated.
Walking in the light as Jesus is in the light means taking every step in faith, love and consecration, doing present duty now at any cost, obeying humbly and trusting God through doubt, unbelief, obstacles and dread, and holding ready to go when and where Christ leads. Christ offers to walk through all life's journey with those who so walk and cheer the way by His presence, for He alone can make the way bright and joyful, while refusing His companionship leaves one groping in darkness through one's own fault. It means being imbued with the Spirit of Christ and constantly drawing near to God, having Jesus formed within as the hope of glory through deeper experience, devoted faith, meekness and loveliness, personally applying God's Word to purify the soul and quicken the conscience, and following on to know the Lord in a progressive work until realized.
Walking in the light requires a humbled heart cleansed from impurity, confession of sins, and pleading with God for victory under the control of the Holy Spirit through daily conversion. It means receiving the light given and walking while it lasts, redeeming the time, and following on in true obedience with a burden for souls and the heavenly message for this last time. Those who so walk have the wisdom and goodness of God in His word becoming brighter and brighter, prepare the mind by the quickened discernment of the Spirit to receive more truth as truth unfolds, and advance by studious search from dim discernment to clearer sight of heavenly glory shining to the perfect day.
Walking in the light as Christ is in the light is the only safety and the only way to heaven, keeping darkness from clouding the path so the feet stand sure with Christ as Leader. Reading the Word of Him who is Truth and Righteousness gives certainty of the sure result, for Christ came to show the course to pursue to have His light, joy, and crown of rejoicing, and His humble practical life is the blessed light to practice by marking His every step. It is a privilege with Christ at the believer's side to strengthen, for He has ascended as the sun to lighten every man who will walk in His light, and in the closing days amid strong satanic deception the sober, watchful, prayerful worker guided by the Word has heavenly angels beside him guarding from every corrupting influence.
Walking in the light belongs to a living, growing experience in Christ in contrast to walking in darkness, available to every soul and joined with fellowship with the Father and His Son and fullness of joy. It is strictly individual, where each soul stands or falls for himself and cannot excuse stumbling by another's unfaithfulness, and it is the path of Christian life to which believers are called. It means bearing fruit to God's glory with the eye single and fixed constantly on Jesus, seeking purity, virtue and holiness to represent Christ amid a crooked nation and shine as lights, pressing steadily onward and upward in oneness with God and union with Christ in saving souls.
Walking in the light as Christ is in the light is the condition for receiving the grand privilege of becoming children of God, sons of God, heirs of God, and joint-heirs with Jesus Christ. This walking is daily receiving the grace of Christ and acting it out in words, spirit, and deeds, exercising faith and cherishing the hope and comfort He has provided. Each person is on test and trial to perfect a character after the divine similitude.
Obedience and Holy Life
Walking in the light is keeping His commandments and His Word, walking even as Christ walked, and loving the brother instead of hating him, with the love of God perfected within rather than wresting the Scriptures to excuse disobedience or speaking against commandment-keeping people. To claim fellowship with God while walking in darkness is to lie and not do the truth, for God is light and in Him is no darkness at all, and no one is without sin, so saying there is no sin is self-deception and saying we have not sinned makes God a liar and shows His word is not in us. Those who so walk have fellowship one with another, and the blood of Jesus Christ cleanses from all sin, which belongs with confessing sin to receive forgiveness and cleansing from all unrighteousness. Christ gave His life to make obedience possible and its blessing claimable, and His blood cleanses the one who takes a firm and determined stand on His side by accepting obedience as a lifework, keeping commandments and not departing from precepts without weighing advantages or disadvantages, and the one so cleansed is accepted in the Beloved with words and actions exerting influence for good. Walking in the light is living in obedience rather than continuing in sin, as children of light made pure and holy through Christ's righteousness, with freedom from condemnation and temporal and spiritual blessings to the obedient. Walking in the light is living by faith in Christ and sharing His righteousness, partaking of the divine nature and complete in Christ while continuing in the light, with remission through His blood and obedience made acceptable by imputed righteousness, while receiving light about God's law and refusing it is rejecting light and remaining under sin's dominion and penalty in enmity toward God.
Sin is transgression of the law, Christ was manifested to take away sins and in Him is no sin and to destroy the works of the devil, and whoever abides in Him does not sin while whoever sins has not seen nor known Him, whoever does righteousness is righteous even as He is righteous, and whoever commits sin is of the devil who sins from the beginning. Walking in the light brings fellowship one with another and cleansing from all sin, and gives definite instruction about the knowledge God wants as an experience every soul may have. True sanctification never claims sinlessness but seeks perfection by walking in the light of God's presence, consistently refusing compromise with sin and calling sin by its right name. Christ alone saves by cleansing from all sin, not saving by the law yet not saving in disobedience to it but helping keep God's commandments, and seeing sinfulness increases gratitude for deliverance. Faith in the Saviour that His blood cleanses from all sins must be joined with personal repentance for violating the commandments which no one can do for another, not permitting continued transgression and not saving in sin but saving from sin to obedience where true happiness is found. Mere belief does not bring cleansing but only faith that works by love and purifies the heart, with all merit in Christ's blood and not in transgressing while shunning the cross yet expecting to enter the city. Jesus alone can cleanse from defilement through repentance before God and faith in Christ, while seeking to establish own righteousness by personal worth, virtues, work, tainted performances and blemished obedience does not elevate but offends and leaves uncleansed, and a probationer's future weal or woe depends on repentance and faith rather than self-boasting, self-sufficiency and false estimate of merit.
Walking in the light as Christ is in the light is whole-heartedly and lovingly endeavoring to please God, obeying plain truth and keeping commandments with unselfish heart, bringing assurance, comfort, hopefulness and gladness while graces of heavenly origin are developed and matured by exercise. Lives so lived become clean and pure in conduct and example, with inspiring influence attracting and leading even trembling and loitering ones to walk in the same light. It is living in obedience to all God's commandments without discouragement, refusing to trust in man or make flesh an arm, believing the message of truth and holding by faith to sustaining grace for every required duty and for faithfully bearing what God gives. Those who so walk take God at His word and will at last meet the Saviour and see His face and receive the crown of life, and when they faithfully discharge warning others, what others choose will not be charged to their account. Walking in the light is following God's way and advancing in obedience and not standing still or doing nothing, taking up duty and obeying with whole heart, soul, strength and mind, honoring God and trusting Him with temporal interests. It is the safe path without stumbling, requiring earnest effort even when crucifying self, with love for souls prompting effort and strengthening the heart while developing Christian graces. It is walking in harmony with God's holy law by which character is formed able to stand, while rejecting advanced light now given leaves in darkness.
Walking in the light is obeying God's revealed will shining through His Word, following it without setting aside any command for human customs, convenience or fear of loss. The blood of Jesus Christ cleanses from all sin and faith in that blood is necessary for salvation, for mere observance of law without faith in His blood is not sufficient. This truth was upheld with increasing fidelity in later years as believers grew, against Satanic delusion, dissension and heresy claiming Christ's love released from obedience, Jewish customs and mere law-keeping without faith could save, Christ was only a good man, and deceivers living in transgression could deny Christ and His gospel while pretending to be true. Cherished sin hardens the heart and turns light into darkness for those handling sacred things who fail to walk, while rejecting pharisaism and self-righteousness leads to recognizing need for Christ's righteousness and accepting it by faith. Cleansing comes by the blood as mercy and forgiveness to all coming to Christ trusting His merits to take away sins and receiving Him by faith as personal Saviour for whom Christ fulfilled the law, without setting aside justice, dishonoring holy law, or changing conditions of salvation which remain the same under new covenant as old, with eternal life for all obeying God's law in perfect obedience revealed in thought, word and deed. Walking in the light as Christ is in the light puts definitely on the Lord's side with a fixed line of separation from the enemy's side, unseen by natural eye, which Satan works to blur and erase but cannot because God traced laws governing words, conduct and works of those who walk, requiring individual definite decision to be clearly on the Lord's side, for whoever is not definitely on the Lord's side is not working with Christ but warring on the enemy's side.
Walking in the light is obeying truth under conviction of conscience, especially keeping the seventh-day Sabbath and refusing to work on it even at risk of losing employment. Entering that light involves deep conviction, reading of Christ's sufferings, and decided obedience to conscience. Others are helped to walk by years of prayer with their case a special subject, by personal visits, and by speaking and sharing truth-filled reading to lead them to take hold of truth. Walking in the light is humbling the heart, confessing sins, yielding ideas to receive wisdom from heaven, and practicing taught truths as a doer of the word and not a hearer only, daily dying to self, warring earnestly against faults, learning of Jesus in humility, and overcoming sin by divine grace transforming character and sanctifying through truth. Choosing darkness is resisting divine influence, dishonoring Christ while professing love, violating conscience, yielding to temptation, refusing to yield ideas, and indulging selfish desires while cherishing evil desires, covetousness, revengeful passions and dark sullen thoughts until Satan gains full control into bondage. John and Judas had the same opportunities to study and follow the divine Pattern and same access to transforming grace, representing the two classes professing to follow Christ in this choice. It is the gospel alone sanctifying the soul and making the walk possible, giving a life measuring with the life of God through eternal life in the Son, upholding principles of the Word in sacred purity and laboring faithfully for perishing souls so the church becomes an honor with God's seal of approval. Preaching without doing does not meet the standard, but humbling before God and abiding in Christ lead to higher holier experience and knit together in fellowship, and until walking in light of His Word the work God is willing to accomplish will not be seen. It is being a doer with truth implanted by the Spirit as sure steadfast anchor, holding principles and proving faithful to sacred trusts in every sphere, while drifting from principles is not walking. Preachers betraying holy trusts, physicians making shipwreck of faith, and lawyers, judges and senators corrupted, yielding to bribery and bought and sold, fail to walk and are blind leaders, clouds without water, trees without fruit, twice dead. It is keeping the soul purified, elevated and ennobled through truth, walking humbly in truth and righteousness, and taking counsel with God and older experienced brethren instead of trusting own wisdom and sharpness, which for grave responsibilities of physician or leader is the only safety, while failing brings misunderstanding own strength, losing sanctifying power, and being led into strange paths where Christ's footsteps are not seen.
Sanctification takes in the whole being and is received only by those walking in the light, which means reflecting light to those around and producing fellowship one with another, with cleansing from all sin to those who so walk. Salvation of the soul depends on the course pursued, and failure to gain eternal life comes from failure to keep God's commandments. The Word shines with light sufficient to guide every step to heaven, so losing the way is without excuse. Walking in the light is living a new life in Christ, thinking and doing God's will and letting Christ shape every part including the home, sanctified through faith in truth with His life leading to conduct healing rather than harming others. It is more than agreeing with truth, for truth must shape life unto sanctification, and those receiving great light but not walking fall into darkness vulnerable to deception, with every defect to be overcome rather than allowed to become controlling power for evil. Those walking yield to God's law and are sanctified through truth, with love for fellow believers as evidence, while envy, jealousy and suspicion show truth has not sanctified the heart and knowledge of truth condemns those not walking. It is living in Christ and putting away jealousy and wrong attitudes, going with unity and faithful practice of the word.
Earthliness and selfishness separate from God, so walking in the light as God is in the light requires confronting sin, with faithful witnesses reproving it by urgent warnings that can break hard hearts and consume what is corrupt. Following Christ means walking in the light as He is in the light, shown by refusing compromise with the world and manifesting mercy, compassion, tenderness and gentleness with special attention to the poor. It connects with following Christ's example and representing His character through practical godliness, including confronting wrongdoing without excusing it while keeping own spirit subdued, hiding self in Christ, and correcting with kindness rather than harshness or bitterness. It is living under God's counsel and doing good, while separating from God and following another leader is contrary to that walk. It is walking in Jesus' footsteps in humility under sanctification of the Spirit and standing fully on Christ's side, while those not walking remain in the enemy's snare with no change for the better, so walking means not expressing sympathy for them, not binding up with them, not entering business negotiations, and refraining from unadvised words on their behalf, which constitutes true religion.
Walking in the light requires living by truth handled, for those serving in sacred work must not settle into carelessness or mistake darkness for light but must have pure hearts and clean hands. Those professing belief must show power of truth by working onward and upward from principle and molding life and character after the perfect Model, letting deep solemn truths take hold upon sympathies with high appreciation for given light, beautifying and ennobling life with heaven's adornment, purity and true goodness. Those knowing truth must show its sanctifying influence in words, conduct, voice and actions at all times and places, for profession of advanced light is worthless when not lived and condemnation is proportionate to light received but not honored. It lets one know ways please God instead of going day to day in uncertainty and doubt, by consenting to walk there, believing and trusting implicitly, and putting light and knowledge already received to practical use in humble faithful work wherever possible. A church with great light is in danger if not walking in it, for humility and obedience must mark lives so others recognize they have been with Jesus. It is applied to doing God's will, enabling overcoming selfishness.
Fellowship With One Another
Fellowship with God cannot be separated from a holy life, for sanctification takes in the whole being, and to claim fellowship while living contrary to it is to lie and not do the truth. Walking in the light as He is in the light is knowing and obeying the truth, and this walk gives both fellowship with one another and complete cleansing from all sin through the blood of Jesus. Having fellowship with one another means treating one another as children of God, in unity born of living in Christ, with union shown in spirit, words and actions rather than profession alone without good fruit. Those cleansed from sin by Christ's blood and born again are united in shared life in the Spirit regardless of social position, bearing clear testimony that God is light with no darkness and finding full joy in real daily communion with Father and Son.
Love for fellow believers is evidence of living in the light, while hatred and hostility toward a brother show one remains in darkness even when zeal for God is offered as excuse. Walking in the light means speaking the truth in love and growing up into Christ the Head, with the whole body fitly joined together and built up in love, keeping His commandments and His word, walking as Christ walked, and loving the brother rather than hating him. It stands against walking in darkness while claiming fellowship, saying there is no sin, saying we have not sinned, wresting Scripture to excuse disobedience, and speaking against commandment-keeping people. It means putting away evil speaking, evil thoughts, evil doings and hard speeches, and settling wrongs by confessing one's own sins rather than charging guilt upon others, for those who so live remain in the light, share fellowship, and are washed from every sin. Saying I do not hate my brother proves little, for zeal against a brother whose ideas conflict, feelings with no kinship to love, no disposition to harmonize, and readiness to be at swords' point reveal a heart without love and not walking in the light. Such bitterness can cause rejection of the very light needed for this time when the despised brother is bearing a message from God, and the call is to keep Christ's love in the heart giving fragrance to words and works, to remember, repent and do the first works lest first love be left, to be watchful and strengthen what remains, and no longer to walk in vanity of mind with darkened understanding and blindness of heart.
Confession and reformation remove what divides believers, while Christ forgives and cleanses from sin and from the accumulated effects of human devising and refusal to submit to Him that foster alienation and strife. Walking in the light means living in the truth and in communion with the Father and the Son, and this fellowship leads to unity among believers as sanctification daily and progressively yields the heart to Christ and blends believers together in doing God's will. This cleansing is connected with renewed love for God and with putting away the sin and discord that divide people. Pressing toward the light, praying earnestly, coming together, laying hearts open before God, making confession without fear, taking stumbling blocks out of the way, and removing what prevents love for one another clear the way for that fellowship.
The blood cleanses from all uncleanness without distinction, so the same cleansing applies to Gentiles and Jews, to people of every race, birth, station, nationality and color, and neither group is inferior to the other. Those who fear God and work righteousness are accepted by Him, and uncircumcised Gentiles like circumcised Jews can be accepted and share in the fellowship of believers. Those who walk in the light by receiving and obeying the truth and believing in Him share fellowship as members of one family in Christ, to whom His cleansing blood is applied.
Following Christ in the light brings unity, for those who follow His footsteps do not walk in darkness. Pride, self-sufficiency and unsanctified independence divide believers, while following Christ brings them together, and those who draw apart in unsanctified independence cannot have God's presence and blessing in their work. Walking in the light means taking courage and refusing to talk, pray or act discouragement, pressing together in unity because in unity there is strength and in disunion weakness, harmonizing instead of following independent judgment, with no one man's mind as controlling influence but all cultivating Christ's meekness and lowliness and learning constantly of Him. It is a privilege open to believers to live in perfect unity and love with fellow workers, letting Christ's love abide in the heart, being much in prayer, making attitude, words and spirit a living epistle, and sharing together in presenting truth. Ministers who have not so walked are full of self-esteem, lay plans to carry out their own ideas, and need entire change of spirit and thorough conversion, lest in this perilous time, like those who heard the gospel without mixing it with faith and came short of rest, the day of God come upon them as a thief in the night through heeding Satan's suggestions.
Walking in the light is shown by genuine fellowship and love, by highly appreciating and following newly given light of truth and love of Jesus, which brings unity with no dissension, greater sight of the blessedness of truth, success in labor, and large enjoyment of God's presence and love. It is applied to coming into God's light as He is in the light with harmony among those working together, and to receiving the truth and letting its light shine among others. Those who so walk are true and sincere brethren, beloved of God, humble in heart, wise and sincere in speech, holding steadily to purpose without confusion or discouragement even when a Judas is found among disciples. They learn truth to be sanctified through it, laying up broad essential doctrinal truth as one string of jewels held together by the person and work of Christ as golden thread and living center, all truth meeting in salvation by faith in Christ evidenced by Christlike character and perfect obedience, and they are not left in darkness nor is their course to be questioned and criticized.
Walking in the light means living by truth with love for God and others, in freedom from selfishness and strife, valuing souls, helping teach truth, serving fellow believers, and acting as a peacemaker rather than stirring up conflict. Had one loved and been sanctified by truth he would have so valued souls and helped others, and taking a clear stand for truth and reflecting Christ preserves influence, while departing from God blurs the difference between lovers of God and lovers of pleasure and weakens it. It means praying for divine light and loving to live in it, making the Father's will the meat and drink of life, with religious principle as the spring of conduct bearing the Spirit's fruit as naturally as a fig tree bears figs. Such a nature thoroughly imbued with love for God and men works Christ's works with a willing heart, life hid with Christ in God, unconscious of own goodness, never calling attention to good works or talking of a sinless state, but humble and lowly while all within its sphere perceive the beauty and fragrance of the life and angels linger about the path as a wall of fire. It means not yielding to unholy propensities and not working to create disunion, for those who do so are not walking in the light. It means frankly confessing faults and clearing the soul from every trace of wrong instead of covering sins and holding together to hide them, for those who do not so walk are left in blindness, regard iniquity in the heart, and the Lord does not hear their prayers or prosper their experience, keeping themselves and the church in bondage, while those who confess and follow the light receive pardon, healing, and freedom for themselves and the church.
Walking in the light as God is in the light brings fellowship and cleansing from sin through Jesus' blood, and includes following sound principles of health reform, for failure there brings backsliding, dishonor to God, loss of spirituality, and needless barriers. It means following light already received, and as people go forward in it God gives further light and leads out of bondage into liberty. It is linked with living under God's guidance and influence as He is in the light, with walking in the light of Christ's righteousness where truth unfolds and sanctifies, and teachers are to walk in light sent to them, for Christ's blood is the price paid for the world's salvation.
Walking in the light gives a clear uplifting testimony grounded in practical knowledge of God and Christ, bringing fellowship with one another and with God with cleansing from all sin. It involves communion with God and fellowship with others, expressing God's love in words and actions and shining as lights in the world, with light growing brighter for those who obey and becoming darkness to those who refuse. Those who so walk reflect light to others so that words and actions testify they are in the light. The call to walk in all the light and power God gives means living by truth revealed in His Word rather than relying on another's experience. That walk is linked to clear unobscured discernment, covenant relation with God and His adopted children, and oneness with Jesus, and it gives young Christians clear understanding of individual responsibilities and duties to serve Christ faithfully.
Such a spiritual life of love, forbearance, patience, longsuffering and self-denial like the Saviour's helps those around and wins others to the new and living way consecrated by Christ's blood, as those who trust and hold fast to Him by faith go from strength to strength and from light to greater light with truth illuminating their steps and Christ's life inspiring effort until complete in Him with His righteousness, not their own. Walking in the light is lived out in close associations pure and holy and a great help, in spiritual conversation upon truth and righteousness showing a pure fountain of heart, in a pure holy atmosphere around the soul, in gathering light not darkness, in clearness to discern true valuable traits in others, and in practicing truth and carrying out its lofty principles with life hid with Christ in God. Walking in darkness by contrast is close intimacy tinged with selfishness, bigotry and self-righteousness, climbing upon the judgment seat, encouraging unholy surmisings, evil speaking and false witness, injuring both souls and tending to destroy character. As Christians advance their light grows brighter and draws them into closer relationships, calling in the home to improve relationships, fulfill sacred duties, keep the soul in Christ's love, and live in close connection with Christ the Light of the world. It includes working with the Saviour by sharing with others what He has revealed, living the received light and honoring Christ on the Lord's righteous way so as to reflect His light to others. It is the opposite of being bodies of darkness altogether too blind to comprehend their true condition, absorbed in dwelling on others' mistakes, accusing and dissecting words and acts to find all objectionable; instead it means ceasing accusation, turning eyes from others' sins to behold Christ, and employing powers to better purpose.
Cleansing by Christ's Blood
The cleansing rests on God giving His Son as the propitiation for a guilty world, the reality to which all Jewish sacrificial offerings pointed. Each dying victim was appointed to impress that forgiveness comes through Christ's blood alone, received by faith, and His suffering corresponded to the dignity of His sinless, exalted person rather than atoning for any sin of His own. The blood sprinkled in Israel's covenant service represented Jesus' shed blood, half placed on the altar and half on the people when the book of the covenant was read at Sinai to set them apart as a peculiar people. So too the blood sprinkled on the mercy seat was accepted by God as effective to cleanse the people from guilt and defilement, pointing forward to the shedding of Jesus' blood.
His blood is the fountain opened and prepared to remove defilement, into which sinners may plunge and be cleansed, for in themselves human beings have no power to wash away even one stain. It is the plea that speaks in behalf of sinners, with Christ as the connecting link between God and man, ready to cause the iniquity of the repenting sinner to pass away and to clothe him with change of raiment and a fair mitre. God waits to bestow forgiveness, pardon for iniquity, and the gift of righteousness on all who believe in His love and accept His salvation. Perishing souls wash in that fountain by believing in Christ as personal Saviour and seeing Him by faith, which brings them out of darkness into light, casting away old sin-stained garments of character and putting on Christ's righteousness in a pure and holy life.
Remission rests on Christ's merits alone, and forgiveness belongs to God alone, giving Christians assurance that sins are remitted. The virtue of the blood of the crucified and risen Saviour is the sinner's only hope and sufficiency, to be lifted up in every discourse, for only through the Redeemer's merits is salvation gained after the downtrodden law is vindicated. Christ tasted death for all, that through faith in His name every man may taste and see that the Lord is good. Forgiveness and justification come through that blood as propitiation and deliverance, not as pardon purchased with money nor as permission to continue in sin, and through faith it removes every dark spot from character. Reliance on its merits is the basis of salvation.
The promise gives hope and assurance of pardon to the sin-stricken. As the Passover lamb's blood marking the doorposts sheltered Israel from wrath when it fell on Egypt, so Christ's death and blood cleanse the believing sinner and shelter from the wrath to come upon the impenitent and unbelieving. None is benefited unless by his acts he manifests faith and performs the work God leaves him to do. That blood alone is safety, as the blood on the doorposts alone barred the angel of death where God promised to pass over where He saw the blood, with all other devices without avail. It is received by saving knowledge of Christ crucified and by faith laying hold of His righteousness, without which even cultivated intellect, vast knowledge, theological speculation, and human honor leave a man lost. This is the faith of Jesus belonging to the third angel's message, with commandments of God and faith of Jesus of equal importance and law and gospel hand in hand, Jesus treated as sinners deserve to be treated and taking human sins that humans might take His righteousness, able to save amply and fully and entirely, the only hope for time and the song through eternity.
No other agency can cleanse the sinner; cleansing comes through accepting the propitiation made by the Lamb of God. It reaches the heart, removing impurity and every kind of selfishness, and by grace makes the character righteous, seen in goodness, righteousness, self-sacrifice, and a daily experience of godliness, faith, meekness, and patience. No one can cleanse his own soul from even one stain, but the pitying, compassionate Saviour gives cleansing through God's converting power transforming the character, without which heaven is lost. Jesus alone can undo the guilt and damage of sinful choices. This requires praying and watching unto prayer, cherishing what it means to follow Christ, beholding Jesus to be changed into His image, entire surrender, and faith which works by love and purifies the soul.
The blood cleanses from all sin, even scarlet sin and the blackest crimes, pardoning to the full when sin is repented of and forever forsaken, while without repentance and conversion separation from God becomes final. The cleansed life receives a new heart of flesh fragrant with good works. It washes away every spot and stain, a marvelous salvation far beyond finite conception springing from the Father's love in giving His dear Son to die for a fallen world, blending mercy, tenderness, and forgiveness with justice, dignity, and power, bridging the gulf of perdition by the cross of Calvary, condescending to human feebleness to bear sins and sorrows as One merciful to pardon and mighty to save, a priceless gift to be fully accepted by faith. Its power lies in the full and perfect sacrifice of the sinless Son, able to cleanse even the foulest stain, speaking better things than that of Abel, giving wisdom and righteousness and sanctification and redemption, so the only safe ground for glory is the cross by which the world is crucified to the believer and the believer to the world. This truth of cleansing by His merits alone belongs to the faith once delivered to the saints, held and defended by the Waldensians in the Piedmont Alps in protest against Roman corruption. It cleanses from both least and greatest sin, and by trusting God and surrendering self Christ dwells in the heart in harmony with the Father and Son.
Because Christ paid the penalty for transgression and made atonement, believers need not come to God as condemned criminals, and prayer is not expiation or penance for sin. The Bible points to the star of hope in a precious Saviour who loves, whose blood washes away all sin, known by experience as a mighty helper to poor dependent creatures who do not know what a day may bring, in need of mercy only God can bestow and exposed to sorrows only God can relieve, pitying the afflicted, speaking peace in pain, and lifting the sorrowing and bowed down, with the way to the living Fountain open to drink again and again. The wedding wine represented the shedding of His blood for purifying the world's sins, and its abundant provision illustrates the ample provision for blotting out human iniquity. Understanding the priceless worth of that central atonement requires a clear grasp of God's will, which healthful simply prepared food helps preserve by keeping the brain's fine nerves from injury.
The light of justification by faith reveals this cleansing power, scattering darkness from sin-burdened minds as it did Luther's and guiding repentant sinners to the true source of pardon and peace into the way of life. Looking to Jesus at the cross as light and life and peace, the Sun of Righteousness, proves His broad and deep love against Satan's attempt to cast his hellish shadow between souls and that light and deepen doubts of the Father's love into black despair, while Jesus makes intercession and calls those who mistake and neglect duty not to stay away in darkness but to cease talking darkness and come now believing He will receive them. Through the atoning sacrifice the glorious plan of redemption pardons and draws the sinner near to Infinite Love, God retaining all justice and holiness and revealing holiness in greater glory in cleansing from all sin. Cleansing is more than escape from penalty or bare toleration as a forgiven culprit released from prison; it is acceptance in the Beloved, restoration to confidence and love and friendship and trust as welcomed children blessed of God, with ample provision for every repenting believing soul because God loves the purchase of Christ's blood, the Father waiting at the very entrance to give abundant entrance to the mansions of the blest. God's plan is not intricate: the blood cleanses pollution, Word and Spirit cooperate, and having done His part God calls for living human agents to represent Christ in good works as living channels of light to save the perishing. Those facing temptation and fitted for conflict by trial are kept by God's power and cleansed through the Lamb.
The shed blood removes every sin and gives sustaining life, received only by living faith claiming its power, with the risen Jesus living to plead His own blood and intercede for every receiver, speaking better for sinners than Abel's blood. Believers must keep its power continually before them and grow in appreciation of its priceless worth, and as claimed by faith it keeps the conscience clean and at peace with God as their hope. Its cleansing power can be personally felt and praised, bringing healing as the Sun of Righteousness risen with healing in His wings, linking life with Christ's life and making Him spiritual sustenance, His word of grace becoming manna and His promises life, sweetness, and peace beside which earthly things are empty. Felt daily in the heart, it marks living loving disciples who count communion with Jesus more precious than exalted position and praise of men, made strong and tender by inward conflict and secret prayer, with humble lives eloquent with holy deeds revealing Christ and winning souls.
That blood has saving power and spiritual nourishment which preaching must not omit, for preaching that leaves out Christ and argues subjects without mentioning the Redeemer lacks nourishment, leaves hearts unpricked so men do not ask how to be saved, and resembles Cain's fruit offering, good in itself but lacking the virtue of Christ's blood represented by the slain lamb. The already shed blood cleanses to the utmost when taken by faith and applied, calling for turning from sin and surrendering to God now. True cleanness is found only in Jesus, who presents prayers to God, turning requests toward what is truly needed when what is asked is not best. Cleansing belongs to those truly united with Christ, not to those merely listed as church members, for name membership does not prove cleansing or union.
Through faith in that blood souls are purified and made white. It alone washes away the deep-seated diseased spot from yielding to a strong unyielding will, acting out feelings, and opposing reproof, a moral disease threatening eternal life and fatal unless washed away, ruining the soul and causing loss of heaven; to be cleansed is for the heart to be affected by truth, refined, purified, and fitted for the kingdom. A polluted soul can be washed from all stains through Jesus. It cures wrong and effaces errors, including dishonest management and failure to do God's required work, and where that cleansing has not happened the wrong remains uncured. Its power is needed in coming with petitions, for without it offerings are polluted and unacceptable. It wipes out the dark stain recorded in unalterable characters, including wrong spirit, wrong words, sarcasm, and unjust decisions in business, but only through repentance, without which the record stands until judgment out of the books.
Jesus as Redeemer has cleansed believers and made them light to the world, privileged to bear this as credentials and proclaim Him the Lamb of God who takes away sin, longing to save the sinner while hating sin and calling sinners to lay sin on Him as Burden-bearer to be one with God and Christ. Its efficacy is the only source of true satisfaction and joy, to be presented from experience, and ministers and physicians forgiven by it become exponents of its power, by which alone men in high positions of trust can be reached, needing special help to understand unpopular truth. Its cleansing reaches all, even the most sinful and degraded, who accept Jesus as atonement and become obedient to heaven's law, nothing less than this sacrifice able to reinstate man in favor. It cleanses from all sin and draws to obedience. It gives purity by following what is written rather than any human will, conforming the human will to God's. His sacrifice purifies and refines believers.
Through faith in His blood sinners receive forgiveness and justification, His complete sacrifice paying the whole debt for those who believe in Him as personal Saviour. His sacrifice washes away sin and impurity, atoning and bringing peace with God, pardon and peace through His merits. It brings purity of soul. It is effective to rescue even the most dissipated Gentiles, turning them from idols to serve the living God and gathering them into the church where changed lives stand as monuments of mercy and proof of its power. Seeing Christ's purity exposes inward impurity and shows human righteousness cannot cleanse or renew the heart; His blood alone cleanses from defilement. It cleanses those changed by the Spirit to partake of the divine nature.
Christ shed His blood to cleanse every human being because the Lord does not want one soul lost, calling for grasping infinite power and arising in God's strength to proclaim the last message of mercy to a dying world.
Receiving Forgiveness and Cleansing
When the conditions laid down in the Word are met with a contrite heart, the blood removes every sin and blots it through Christ Himself from the book of remembrance because of the ample sacrifice made in infinite mercy. None who comes weeping and contrite for forgiveness and restoration is turned away, for Christ stands at the altar of mercy presenting prayers, ready to subdue every evil in human nature so the purchased are not overcome and perish. Those cleansed are lifted above accusation and the strife of tongues, united to His divine-human nature and placed beside the great Sin-bearer in light from God's throne where no human and no evil angel can bring a charge. Those expecting sins to be blotted out must confess them, especially when errors are known to others or position has widened influence, so confessed sins go beforehand to judgment to be blotted out when refreshing comes. This cleansing belongs to coming in humility and contrition and no longer covering sin, acknowledging it plainly rather than glossing it over and turning from disobedience.
Repentant sinners can depend by faith on the merits of the blood and trust mercy despite feeling unworthy or facing discouragement. No one is too great a sinner to be saved, for even while acknowledging sinfulness the helpless sinner may claim Christ as Saviour by virtue of the atonement, trusting not personal merits but His blood to cleanse at that very moment by hanging the helpless soul on Him. One may come just as he is without first making himself better or becoming good enough, and this promise answers Satan when he points to filthy garments and urges staying away, belonging even to one who wandered far, feasted on transgression, and sits with plans thwarted and hopes dead now returning to the Father's house. Walking in the light is a life of constant living faith, and unyielding trust and firm reliance bring peace and assurance even when feelings change or life feels dark.
Those who have sinned are to come to Jesus, confess, and receive forgiveness, for His blood secures pardon. The Holy Spirit convicts of sin and leads the repentant believer through faith in the blood, renewing the mind to holiness by divine grace. Faithful repentance and confession together with faith in the cleansing blood bring forgiveness, and pardon is entered against the sinner's name unto peace. Bringing the burden of sin to Jesus leads to understanding justification by faith and peace with God, so the cleansed can testify the Saviour has cleansed from all sin. Prayer for purification by the blood accompanies confession with assurance that God has forgiven.
Pardon is granted to those who repent of evil deeds and put them away, and their names are not blotted out of the book of life. Sins are forgiven and removed when repented of and confessed, and deep humiliation and repentance before God are acceptable to Him. When others know of errors, especially where position has widened influence, full confession is especially necessary, and confessed sins can be blotted out and go beforehand to judgment to be blotted out when times of refreshing come. Cleansing rests on Jesus' worthiness not human merit, known wrongs must be put right, and the penitent contrite soul is accepted in prayer. Readiness to meet the Saviour is inward white robes of purity of soul and character cleansed from sin, not outward clothing.
Cleansing comes through Jesus alone, for people are helpless without daily mercy and pardon, and those recognizing spiritual need go to Him for help only He can give, to be cleansed from all sin and clothed with the robe of righteousness. The Lord forgives when the heart is humbled in contrition and depends helplessly on Christ, who alone can save from consequences of sinful practices. It is received only by feeling personal sinfulness and lostness without the Redeemer's blood and an undone condition without a Saviour, by reforming in God's strength not one's own, giving self unreservedly to serve continually and loving Him because He first loved and died. No one can save or cleanse his own soul, for cleansing is Christ's work alone by His death as ransom, received in right relation to God in weakness and great need with soul united to God by simple faith and unlimited trust. The Redeemer accepts men as they are with wants, imperfections and weaknesses, cleanses from defilement, grants redemption through His blood, and satisfies heart-longings of all consenting to His yoke and coming for the bread of life with peace and rest unto heights of bliss. He invites youth to come just as they are and give the heart, washes stains in His own blood and fits for mansions in glory, for He is nigh to callers and the Father who gave His Son will with Him freely give all things and hears the contrite repentant prayer.
Cleansing is received by coming, asking forgiveness and giving self to Him, in His strength accepted and made white and clean. It comes through complete surrender to God and full faith, washing away every sin. When sinners recognize themselves as sinners and humble themselves at the cross, God draws them close to Christ, and His grace and righteousness are for those knowing need of divine light and help, not those content with own goodness, refusing to remain servants of sin. The only reason any saved at last can give is that Christ died and His blood cleansed from all sin, coming when the heart is touched by subduing love replacing self with Jesus' love and tender compassion, leading to perfection of Christian character by seeking the Lord earnestly, perseveringly and believingly unto knowing Jesus as complete Saviour with full joy, seeing the King in beauty and eternal salvation. Through faith sins are perfectly forgiven and all may be made perfect in Christ Jesus, depending not on what man can do but what God can do through Christ, giving Christian perfection of soul, sanctification and divine favor in this life while perfection of flesh remains impossible, God looking at Christ the Substitute and showing the repenting believer that Christ accepts surrender to be molded after His likeness with conscience freed from condemnation.
Sin rooted in unbelief in Christ as personal Saviour made humans aliens from God, and restoration comes by believing in Him. Christ died to make atonement and pay the redemption price without which none could be saved, and now stands at the Father's right hand pleading with intercession continuing to the end of the world, prevailing to take away sins and cleanse from all sin. All receiving Him are given power to become sons of God, and because He lives they shall live if obedient, kept from falling, this cleansing being sanctification through truth by unreserved surrender increasing continuously until grace is lost in glory. Cleansing comes only through His blood because sin made human nature unnatural and only God's power in Jesus can break evil's hold, His grace enabling resistance and subduing tendencies of fallen nature. He left heaven's glories and clothed divinity with humanity so fallen humanity could touch Him and receive power to partake of the divine nature and overcome corruption through lust, overcoming for us so His merits, power and virtue can be claimed, cleansing natures and imparting righteousness as we cooperate and live in harmony with His law. The redeeming love shown in this cleansing should lead to using every opportunity to do good and help save others.
Receiving Christ leads to walking in His footsteps and becoming daily more Christlike, glorifying His name and bearing testimony with renewed daily thanksgiving from converted sanctified lips to the love revealed in the gift of the Saviour. Living in the light where God is with no darkness gives fellowship with one another and truly with the Father and Son and makes joy full, while claiming fellowship while living in darkness is lying and not doing truth. The blood removes every sin, and this belongs with honest dealing, for saying there is no sin is self-deception without truth, but confessing brings faithful and just forgiveness and cleansing from all unrighteousness, resting on eyewitness testimony to the Word of life and eternal life with the Father manifested. Christian life as well as words can testify to this cleansing, and those believing God forgave for Christ's sake should keep fighting the good fight with growing stronger faith. Walking in the light means living out truth rather than merely professing faith or following unsanctified ways, and this cleansing does not mean claiming to have no sin but rests on Christ while truth brought into the soul changes thoughts, words and conduct. Christian humility is not constant mourning or doubt about acceptance, for Christ formed within leads to ceasing to sin. The shed blood brings cleansing to those coming for pardon and receiving Him as Saviour, on whom believers continually depend.
Those denying self, overcoming as Christ overcame, and by faith washing character in His blood share the cleansing and can celebrate redeeming power and love. The blood cleanses for those believing its merit and presenting it before the Father as Abel did in offering. Walking in the light means receiving and following truth as revealed, where greater light reveals errors and increases responsibility so sins once in ignorance can no longer be indulged without guilt and life must change to agree with light. The blood removes all sin from one repenting and believing in Christ as atoning sacrifice, who pledged His life and made Himself responsible, standing before God to take guilt upon Himself because left to bear it the sinner faces death. If the transgressor sees Him as atoning sacrifice and believes, he is forgiven and cleansed, for Christ gave His life for the world, and that faith makes His death effective unto opportunity to repent, be converted and become a laborer with God. The Holy Spirit works on the heart to bring to repentance and faith, so rejecting the Spirit cuts off God's communication and leaves inability to receive cleansing.
Those washed in the blood still need cleansing grace when contact with evil soils the heart, bringing sinful temper, vanity, pride and inward defilement to Christ who alone can cleanse, necessary for communion with Him. Readiness is inward white robes of purity of soul and character cleansed by atoning blood, belonging with sincere love for Jesus and communion with God. By faith those honestly examining and condemning themselves can claim cleansing, Christ washing pollution and stains and fitting for heaven's pure harmonious society. Cleansing and pardon once received remain available when one turns back, confesses and forsakes sin and chooses God's way, for the blood retains power to cleanse from every sin. Jesus cleanses the sin-polluted heart by His own blood and saves through matchless love.
Men and women may come as the great Physician just as they are confessing, and His blood cleanses from all sin and blots the dark record. Each repentant soul is received and pardoned and may start afresh forgiven and accepted in the Beloved, with continual pardon so every day and hour one may say transgressions are pardoned. The blood cleanses each person individually and personally from all unrighteousness, and everyone must know for himself that it cleanses even me, purchased privilege presented to be received and enjoyed not rejected lest Christ died in vain. Receiving it renews in knowledge and true holiness, making holy in heart, life and all conduct unto glorifying God in body and spirit with gratitude and praise. Everyone accepting the great gift with genuine repentance and conversion is cleansed, powers holding control are broken, and in light of the sacrifice believers learn to despise iniquity. Cleansing is only for those feeling need of Christ as Physician of soul and body and consenting to His saving influence and treatment, without which there is no purification, but for all consenting there is hope. It is received in repentance, confession and conversion in childlike submission and obedience by surrendering and denying self, taking the cross and following, calling for thanks with heart and voice, for Jesus remains compassionate ready to forgive and cleanse every stain by His blood.
Pardon comes through sufferings and shameful death caused by human sins, through pardoning blood removing every sin. It is received only by those feeling themselves sinners and realizing sinfulness of sin, feeling without Christ's blood they must perish, casting themselves in wretchedness wholly on His mercy, yielding own will and way and pleading for Jesus to control will and actions, then coming into position to receive and appreciate pardon. Christ's blood alone atones and cleanses, while repentance, confession and restitution when others are wronged heal the breach but cannot atone because sin is ultimately against God. Before praying in affliction where Satan controls the mind, sin must be examined, repented, confessed and forsaken with heart humbled and reliance on His blood alone, for fasting and prayer accomplish nothing while wrong course estranges from God. He gave His life and calls to come in humility and contrition to be cleansed from all sin and every glossed-over iniquity, sin called by its right name and the cleansed bowing under truth of the law from Sinai. Cleansing is thorough reformation of the heart stained with selfishness when the Spirit reaches conscience, requiring dependence on Christ alone as risen Saviour since none can keep right paths a moment by self or by another human, while God who gave Christ freely gives all things for life and godliness, and the cleansed heart must be kept clean by obedience.
Walking in the light as Christ is in the light is necessary to see sin as exceedingly sinful, for those not walking remain in nature's darkness deceived about their nature and need of forgiveness. The precious blood alone cleanses every spot and stain, and practical faith in Jesus as sin-pardoning Saviour alone saves the sin-sick soul separated from God by sins and iniquities. Cleansing is received by seeing sin in light of God's holy law, the only standard of righteousness measuring life and character, detecting sin and showing the sinner a transgressor, the true moral mirror first showing defects and convicting of transgression then pointing to the blood. It is appreciated by knowing weak points of character, receiving grace daily, studying Scripture to know the Word better, growing in reverence, trust, love, self-distrust and dependence, bringing religion into everyday life, expressing meekness, overcoming every defect to become pure, holy, undefiled and fit for the kingdom, growing solidly so example blesses others. Those cleansed have rock-bottom conversion with inward principle not surface emotion, maintain integrity in great peril, keep garments undefiled and reveal stern integrity and moral worth through sustaining truth, like David after Thou art the man repenting before God whose law was transgressed and relying on efficacy of the blood. Children are to be taught this faith from early years day by day by instruction and example.
Without cleansing by the blood a person weighed against God's holy law is altogether wanting by nature, for none however earnest can truthfully say there is no sin. Escape from Thou art weighed and found wanting comes only by looking to Christ, who at infinite cost covenanted to be representative in heavenly courts and advocate before God, so accepting Him as Saviour brings cleansing and justification by faith. One casting self wholly on Christ can stand complete in Him rather than relying partly on personal righteousness, for His blood cleanses from every sin. Cleansing comes through Jesus' worthiness alone not merit in the best we can do, His worthiness saving and His blood removing sin while we do what we can by being zealous, repenting and believing. It is received by trusting all on God's promises, trusting in darkness without comfort, faith distinct from feeling taking hold of blessing as already ours with feelings having nothing to do with it, rejoicing coming only after faith brings blessing to the heart. Walking with Jesus in light as an overcomer proves worthy of the name, washed and made white in His blood so as to be found worthy. Even Judas would have been received and pardoned had he repented, but self-confidence, self-exaltation, high estimate of wisdom and self-justification shut out pardon. Fellowship with God and one another requires pride, variance and strife for supremacy uncherished, every difference between brethren removed, heart cleansed from evil thoughts and misunderstandings swept away in preparation to sit with Christ and receive communion of His body and blood. Things allowed between person and God spot and stain character needing washing by the Lamb, and when received nothing blocks abundant blessings and treasure, with God's joy within so joy is full.
The blood cleanses from all sin those accepting Him as personal Saviour, His death bearing due penalty with memorial an effective perpetual offering for all believing. Through His blood Jesus intercedes as Advocate for the guilty, so penitents seeking and acknowledging Him as Saviour may have prayers accepted, sins blotted out and receive the holy oil. The cleansing blood puts away evil and gives victory to the fallen by transgression, opening vindication at the second appearing, bringing redemption, renewal of God's image in mind, heart and character, acceptance in the Beloved, likeness to Christ, and His wisdom, righteousness, sanctification and redemption, kept by holding confidence firm to the end. He has made abundant provision to save completely those coming by faith. If one not surrendering principle repents, forsakes sins and believes in Jesus as sin-pardoning Saviour, the blood washes every stain, not by mere theory but by studying His life, becoming like Him, loving and serving faithfully with Christ abiding to perfect character as vessel unto honor. By living faith His righteousness becomes ours.
Cleansing removes every sin for all sincerely repenting with sins confessed and pardoned, washing clean in the fountain opened for sin, and only such truly penitent will have place in the city of God and inheritance in the earth made new, though transformation may still be had now. Walking in the light means keeping step with Jesus as leader by lifting the cross, denying self, humbling the heart and thereby recovering from Satan's snare into life representing Jesus and fitted for God's work. Even the foul blot of adultery and breaking the seventh commandment can be taken away, even a watchman betraying sacred trust, by confessing to God and brethren and making clean work instead of covering sin and remaining unfeeling as stone. Even one wrong action makes a blot nothing but Christ's blood can wash away, therefore Bible knowers must live Christ's life carefully considering every action as lasting as eternity, sending blessing or evil with words and actions unto life or death, living wholly for Christ in short time not half-hearted burying talents. The blood is efficacious only when everything between person and God or brethren is removed, walking in light meaning as soon as conviction comes to leave the gift before the altar of prayer and do what Christ commanded to remove wrong by confessing and forsaking. When this first work is done the cleansed come into close relation to Jesus and oneness with Christ, evidence to the world God sent His Son, result of grace revealing glory, and with living union comes hatred for sin separating the soul. The Lord knows every act yet the blood removes every sin, meeting sadness and weakness with restoring healing, freeing from lingering grief to do God-given work faithfully, cheerfully and happily with eyes on God, not making light of sin but rescuing to holiness and shaping into Christ's likeness true, pure, generous and loving.
Light Received and Responsibility
God's people must walk in the light He gives, as Israel followed the pillar of fire, and they are accountable to follow that guidance. To walk in the light is to live according to the truth and grace made known, and neglecting it brings spiritual darkness and weakness in proportion to the light neglected or rejected. Neglecting the light and its requirements blinds perception until darkness appears to be light and light appears to be darkness, weakening discernment and dulling conscience through repeated violation. Having great light is not the same as walking in it, for some received great light but did not live according to it.
Walking in the light means receiving and following truth as it is revealed, with life and character changed to agree with it. Greater light reveals errors and increases responsibility, so sins once committed in ignorance can no longer be indulged without guilt, and knowing continuance brings guilt. The light received brings responsibility proportionate to what is revealed, requiring care not to lead others onto crooked paths to stumble, and requiring those entrusted with sacred truth to use opportunities, show its beauty through holy character, and share warning, comfort, hope and love with those in error and sin.
Walking in the light requires the self humbled under the Holy Spirit through daily conversion, receiving the light given, walking while it lasts lest darkness come, redeeming the time, and following on in true obedience led by the Spirit with a burden for souls and the heavenly message of Christ for this last time. Those who refuse become confused until darkness pervades the soul and shapes the whole course, and those who stop walking by faith cease advancing in truth and become enshrouded in darkness. Safety lies in continuing to follow the light and grow in knowledge of the truth, for those who receive and walk with heart open to the Spirit and grace will have increased light, while those who once walked but now close the heart quench the Spirit, are destitute of grace and under condemnation. Cherished sin hardens the heart and turns light into darkness, and rejecting self-righteousness leads to recognizing need of Christ's righteousness by faith.
Walking in the light prepares the mind to receive more truth, for the Holy Spirit quickens discernment of the beauty and majesty of truth. Those who obey truth made clear receive greater light as truth unfolds and sanctifies, and studious, diligent search brings clearer sight of truths dimly discerned at first until the brightness and value of heavenly glory become visible. Acting on present light is required, since greater light now shines than shone upon the fathers, so their same service cannot be accepted from those with more light. To walk is to imitate their faithfulness and zeal, improve present light as they improved theirs, do as they would have done living now, and exhibit in character and works the union and oneness agreeing with sacred truths professed and prophecies fulfilling in the last days. If light shining on the soul is not walked in it becomes darkness, and truth reaching the understanding will judge and condemn all who turn away and refuse to be led. As believers walk with increasing clearness God gives power in good works, the church dispels darkness when fully receiving light, and keeping pace in holiness makes light grow brighter with refining, removing confusion and strife. Walking means following light already received and pressing forward to the mark of the high calling, with responsibility not only while bright rays shine but for all light ever revealed, expecting more because light from the Saviour is never exhausted but shines steadily increasing unto the perfect day, leading forward out of bondage into liberty.
Walking in the light means advancing with God as He continually imparts new light from His word and leads by providence to the close of history, continuing the Reformation beyond Luther who reflected only the light then given and was not to receive all. God is light and ever gives light, so fellowship with Him requires receiving unfolding truth and moving forward, while those endeavoring to walk are opposed by those refusing to advance. Professed churches prove they do not walk by loving the world, joining in spirit and fellowship with workers of iniquity, departing from the commandment for friendship and customs of the world, and mistaking temporal prosperity, learning, luxury, popularity and worldly favor for God's favor. The image describes living by truth given after 1844. It describes ministers who accepted and lived by light given at Minneapolis and during the past year, valuing truth and love of Jesus with unusual success and God's presence and love. It is incompatible with the prejudiced un-Christlike spirit shown at Minneapolis, in which those acting could not be trusted to be walking.
The phrase applies to carrying out instructions for Avondale School to make it a training ground for missionary fields. Here it means recognizing and acting on responsibility to bring ministry to the long-neglected Southern field. It means not moving in darkness but making no move without knowing what is to be done and the mind of God, relying wholly on God rather than rush, guess, impulse, imagination or human counsel, with much praying and even fasting, mind and heart awake to hear God, soul touched with Christ's love and every action under God's supervision. So applied, the church at Battle Creek was to leave Battle Creek to work elsewhere in the moral vineyard with well-defined plans, speaking Thus saith the Lord and It is written, going to enlighten others only when fitted to direct and counsel in fear of God.
Walking in the light includes following sound principles of health reform let shine in the last days, by which people escape many dangers to be faced. It means receiving and practicing truths sent in health reform in harmonious action and in families, as God's appointed means of saving lives and sanctifying soul, body and spirit through consecration and reconversion, including learning how food and drink affect the body and putting it into practice. Adults and children should give up foods eaten merely to indulge appetite, with children practicing self-denial by saving money for God's cause, and eating between meals taxes the stomach and can cause disease in digestive organs. When God's people fail they backslide, dishonor God, lose spirituality and erect needless barriers, remaining far behind in faith, hearing but not practicing, counterworking God's plans with finite ideas, losing discernment and remaining in blindness through self-indulgence. Justifying practices conflicting with given light, such as using tea and meat, is not walking in the light, for when appetite overcomes and habits do not conform to God's will safeguards break down. A church whose members do not live by received light is poorly prepared to help new believers, and a man or minister after many years with no appreciation of medical missionary work, temperance in all bearings, and health reform light cannot help churches and should not preside over or be placed in charge of those loving truth and valuing temperance. Walking also means seeing money matters large and small in true light and economizing as the truly converted do, refusing ambitious projects to secure high wages to invest in lands and houses, and refusing to spend the Lord's money multiplying pictures of self and friends, since that display is idolatry and all idolatry is sin, and every dollar belongs to the Lord for saving souls for whom Christ died because the end is near.
Living the Light Daily
Living the light daily makes preaching earnest and certain, speaking what is known because God has spoken it, with positiveness and persuasive entreaty and authority that makes truth a reality, keeping the Bible before hearers with a plain Thus saith the Lord that brings decision to consecrate heart and mind to Christ. It teaches mastery over self, refusing to be led by inclination or selfish desire, and calls God's people to live as reformers choosing good rather than evil instead of walking in darkness and bearing the light received. God's light shines in a spiritually dark world to guide in its rays, calling those who have truth to cultivate faith and gratitude and work for others' salvation rather than indulge doubt, discord, selfishness or worldly influence, upholding righteousness, searching the heart over neglected work and influence leading others to impenitence.
Coming out of darkness means coming into a higher place into God's presence instead of staying in the dark mourning over it, coming to God confessing sins and believing His promise to cleanse from all unrighteousness, with open thorough heartfelt confession that makes free, as was urged for LeRoy Nicola, for without it the same wrong spirit returns when circumstances recur. There is only one Judge, the One who died and took human nature with all its infirmities so sinners may stand on vantage ground, leaving no place for pronouncing sentence on brethren, and His death is Yea and Amen to the repentant, leading the penitent upward step by step with peace of mind while angels guard the believing soul from intrusion of evil angels. Walking in Christ's light shapes ministers to labor wisely from a heart filled with truth and sanctified to God without bitter criticism, for criticism brings weakness not strength, shows dependence on human sympathy not the Lord, and lacks the Spirit's deep movings to build up; working from self instead of Christ is walking in darkness and misrepresenting His spirit.
Walking in the light means actively moving forward in the good work called for, using abilities with personal effort where each step brings strength for further obedience and graces mature through exercise in service. It brings companionship of holy angels through living confiding trust in God each day, with God's power resting on those who walk in His ways and keep His charge. Refusing light sent to reveal the true condition in order to avoid exposure of deeds is choosing darkness, and viewing things in perverted rather than true light surrounds with darkness, endangers stumbling into Satan's many snares, and harsh hasty dealing can increase that darkness so persevering untiring effort is needed to save from grave mistakes. It means following Jesus as Leader and Guide rather than impulse, guesswork, human wisdom, plans or natural temper, listening for Follow Me, waiting patiently and prayerfully for command and wisdom from heaven instead of moving hastily, which gives safety, well-balanced minds, sound judgment and divine leadership in every battle and decision, aided by wise counsel, prayer and fasting.
Young people walk in the light by loving Jesus and delighting to please Him in faithfulness at home through patience under correction, kindness to parents and help with daily burdens, students do so by consecration using gifts for others' good with enlarged understanding and zeal, and every teacher and worker may do so through conversion and the Holy Spirit's transforming influence. Fellowship with Christ appears in tenderness at home, with His presence bringing sympathy, courtesy and loving care, kindness as sign of union and unkindness as sign of its lack, guiding children to serve God so peace and love reign, and self-control even under temptation and provocation joining human effort with divine power so others see divine leading and teaching. It means seeking perfection in God's countenance as true sanctification that never claims sinlessness nor covers sin but proves profession by obedience, living near God in oneness with Christ in love and sympathy to help the needy, strengthen the weak and direct to Christ, meditating day and night on His character for deeper understanding, greater accomplishment, joy and uplift.
Living by the Word means living by truth learned from Scripture and encouraging others by example, gathering divine rays on the pathway to save children and keep the highway of holiness, holding fast to Jesus amid provoking trials and emergencies, asking what to do now without storming or scolding so speech brings patience and love home, searching Scriptures for oneself with heart open to its rays to be taught of God, practicing truth apart from human theories and hungering for wisdom from God. It means looking steadfastly to Jesus as example and Light of the world rather than worldly customs, shining with hope, joy, humility, meekness, simplicity and purity that testifies of divine source and makes the church a power for good, studying and practicing His lessons with growing understanding and Christlike speech and action, while blindness to truth leads to darkness. God does not want His people in gloom but opening the heart to Christ's righteousness, light and grace to reflect to others, reaching upward, thinking much of Jesus and little of self, dwelling on His matchless charms and self-denying cross without self-exaltation but with thankfulness to the living Intercessor, fixing eyes on God's love, blessings and mercies with prayer, trust, faith and hope talk that brings cheer, crucifying darkness, murmuring, complaining and unbelief talk with a new song of praise telling His love and wonderful works.
Trusting wholly in Christ rather than self or good works brings abiding peaceful rest with the dark path brightened by the Sun of Righteousness, cleaving by faith through Satan's hellish shadow without looking at it or talking of the devil's power and hard times but talking faith without doubt because the redeemed are purchased and free, praying also for opposers who trespass and hurt with humbled sincere importunate prayer seeking their help, forgiveness, righting of wrongs and Christlikeness, since with God there is multiplied pardon. Receiving the Holy Spirit with open heart belongs to this walk for missionary burden, doing Christ's words in connection with God to share light for others' salvation, with Bible simplicity in dress and piety rightly representing Christ even in foreign fields, while pride of dress and spirit, self-esteem and self-importance exclude from the field, and earnest reliance with unreserved piety safeguards work, shining unconsciously in good works as living working sons of God amid crookedness. Being moved by the Spirit from correct principles according to given light has the Lord working with and for the work, while having light without walking shows lack of faith, blocks His work, and endorsing a course not in the light brings condemnation.
Staying closely joined to God in trust brings His imparted righteousness, keeping power, wisdom and unconfused judgment under His leading and blessing in safety, tasting His love and feeding on promises, uplifted, blessed and cheered to become a blessing, doing all to keep in the channel so Satan cannot surround with darkness. Doing duty blesses others and glorifies God with happiness, telling associates and friends who slight the Lord's claims about Christ and eternal life as His missionary to learn wider acceptable service, living consistently in conduct and work so humble sincerity is visible. Humbling the heart day by day with broken confession restores unity in family and among brethren, frankly clearing every trace of wrong instead of covering sins, for general words without specifics do not clear stains nor humble before God, while refusal leaves blindness, regarded iniquity, unheard prayer and bondage, and confession brings pardon, healing and freedom. Living by received light in economy turns from needless prideful selfish spending to spread the gospel, seeing money large and small truly, refusing ambitious wages, land schemes and display of pictures as idolatry, since every dollar belongs to the Lord for saving souls as the end nears, and fellowship with Christ is incompatible with indulgent eating, drinking and lustful appetites sacrificing health.
Standing fully on Christ's side in humility under the Spirit's sanctification gains daily strength to overcome every imperfection unto a place among the faithful and holy, living as enlightened overcomers unto present reward and eternal life, gaining spiritual strength and mutual fellowship to keep faith and release ministers to new fields, refusing sympathy, binding up, business bonds or unadvised words for those in the enemy's snare. Clinging to the Word on a higher platform with the Word as counselor keeps the soul pure, refined, noble and elevated with self hid in God, giving decided convincing influence exalting truth in language, faith and practice and revealing God in word, spirit and character, meditating day and night on His character, heeding warnings and keeping devotion fixed on Jesus rather than pleasing self. Living in vital connection with Jesus the source of truth means seeking light and embracing promises by faith to become a channel, refusing own pleasure, ease, honor and glory to bless and save others, abiding as branch in vine drawing nourishment to bear righteousness and watch for souls instead of sickly piety.
Acting on given light requires essential change not mere profession while insisting on being right, pressing to the light and cherishing it with single eye to God's glory without discouragement even when treated un-Christlike, considering Jesus pure and undefiled enduring temptation, following clear light after best counsel of brethren in fear of God with results proving wisdom, for neglected light becomes darkness. Loyalty requires recognizing Satan's schemes rather than shutting the eyes, warning and reproving the endangered instead of compromising, with clear discernment to detect his attacks for the mind and clear mind to overcome unto the crown of immortal life, turning from beclouding tea, coffee and unwholesome food so truth shines brightly on others' paths. Living faithfully not carelessly is required, for leaders in important positions who failed became unable to receive the Spirit, mistook darkness for light under Satan's deception, and those with light who do not walk can distort and misrepresent what is said. Turning from separating practices to stand for the right bears scrutiny in the last day, living in Christ with His mind according to the Word, self crucified, separated from idols and uncleanness in spirit-and-truth holy worship without stumbling, receiving the Holy Spirit and refusing familiar spirits with whole-hearted repentance when deceived.
Daily faithfulness in obedience means life agreeing with teaching, not straight preaching with careless worldly wit and mirth, but experimental holiness, communion with God, balance by the Spirit, guarding desire's first risings, holding emotion in subjection to reason and conscience, suppressing unsanctified imagination and bringing thought captive to Christ, repenting and thoroughly converting from superficial unsanctified snares, doing His will and way, dying to self and putting away selfishness, for refusal leaves unconverted whatever position changes. Placing the hand each moment in Christ's hand is a precious opportunity not to be neglected without great loss, guarding against seducing spirits and strong delusion for those turned from love of truth, advancing as light is received not depending on past experience, cleansing every health-injuring habit by governing appetite and passion by God's revealed will, valuing blood-bought privileges by doing Jesus' words and representing Christ lest judgment by what one ought to have become finds trifling in probation's decisive hours. Coming to the Lord's help in faith means receiving light from Jesus, talking of light already given, trusting Him, humbling daily and walking in all light sent with single eye to His glory to rightly represent His work, leaving doubt and prejudice to respond faithfully with self-understanding and harmony with His work.
Believing the Word as it reads, for the Bible is its own interpreter, humbles the heart to conform to His will so the church honors truth, building houses of worship in the Lord's counsel and Spirit with single eye to His glory according to instruction so buildings give character, with God's seal on upholders of pure principles laboring for perishing souls. Being educated by the Spirit to stand by God's work refuses erratic misty counsel, keeps the soul purified, elevated and ennobled, walks humbly in truth and righteousness taking counsel with God and experienced brethren rather than own wisdom, the only safety for physicians and leaders lest strength be misunderstood, sanctifying power lost and strange paths without Christ's footprints followed, acting from faith in service with right example that may bring the Spirit's favor. Deciding to obey at any cost even in unpromising fields amid temptations, hindrances, opposition and dangers trusts God for opportunity to let light shine, living where Christ is in light sent without carelessness or opposition to the Spirit's messages and reflecting it in words and works, while unbelief and worldliness hinder harmony and risk light going out in darkness, and walking in sparks of own kindling is false light.
Not shutting light among churches already knowing truth but spreading it into dark places works with the Saviour revealing what He revealed, every member witnessing with meek and quiet spirit so present truth appears in power and lives reveal sanctification. Following light already received brings the Lord's special care, living by it after Christ's example who is in the light, remaining faithful regardless of what others do or say. Not yielding to unholy propensities that create disunion, not regarding light with indifference, misapplying it or stumbling as the Jews did, marks followers, who are not left in darkness and whose course is not to be questioned and criticized. Keeping the will in harmony with the Creator through changing circumstances in God's wisdom resists temptation even from influential tempters, keeps conscience clear, refuses unbelieving sentiments cloaked in misplaced Scripture, looks to Jesus the author and finisher of faith, departs from every sinful proposal, receives admonitions and turns from dishonest practices unto greater light loving God supremely and neighbor as self, lest dim perception, blind leadership and dishonoring profession follow.
Each must seek the Lord for himself and walk in given warnings with God present and not pronounced guilty, acting especially for city multitudes with thorough conversion that does not mistake the enemy's suggestions for the Spirit, refuses cheap experience, self-examines to gain victory and keeps forces united. Making no move without knowing God's mind requires relying wholly on God not rush, guess, supposition, impulse, imagination or human counsel, with much praying and even fasting, mind awake to His voice, soul touched by Christ's love and every action under His supervision, as in leaving Battle Creek with well-defined plans speaking Thus saith the Lord and It is written when fitted to direct, doing His will and dying to self, with obedience uncompelled testing probation whether light will be followed. Living obediently as children of light made pure and holy through Christ's righteousness brings freedom from condemnation and temporal and spiritual blessings, loving God with heart, soul, strength and mind and trusting Him with temporal interests rather than continuing in sin. Those living according to given light do not walk alone, for God observes, turns in love and blesses, and their lives refuse idols and whatever draws mind or affection from Him.
Walking by the living oracles brings large responsibilities proportionate to great light, duties as depositories of sacred truth to beautify it by holiness and send warning, comfort, hope and love to those in error and sin, using every entrusted advantage as debt to God. Following light day by day in willing obedience to all requirements grows experience like dawn to daylight unto full stature in Christ, directing mind to truth and service from one degree of light and strength to another to lead sinners heavenward. Pressing forward in Christ's light rather than encouraging suspicion and discouragement calls for confidence and resisting evil thoughts, living by faith not unbelief with thanksgiving and praise instead of murmuring and complaint. Following Christ in His presence reflects His light through righteousness, good works, self-denial and obedience made possible by His righteousness, encouraging others to follow on the path to eternal life, looking to Jesus, receiving divine light and advancing in it.
Examining whether life and words reflect claimed light, receiving and holding fast given light with pure sanctified hearts purged of neglected opportunities, self-righteousness, pride and fleshly desires to see the true condition, proves more than cheap experience by recognizing failure and seeking victory. Living by faith shares His righteousness and completeness through partaking the divine nature while continuing in the light, with remission by His blood and imputed righteousness making obedience acceptable, presenting justification by faith against unbelief, while refusing counsel and treating own judgment complete is not walking as Christ does, and refusing received light about law leaves under sin's dominion and penalty in enmity. Putting belief into works not mere theory helps bring light, conviction and help to others, keeps the church distinct from the world on high ground as Christ's faithful representative, receiving and rightly using light in His Word. Striving for sacred nearness to commune with God reflects light to benefit believers and neighbors, humbling and conforming to His will, upholding pure principles, honoring truth with God's approval on faithful labor for perishing souls.
Communion with God as the soul's life gives real daily experience with full joy, shown in spirit, words and actions with good fruit not mere profession, unity and fellowship as fruit of living in Christ, the cleansed born-again soul testifying God is light with no darkness, echoed in prayer to see light in His light and be cleansed and atoned by Christ's shed blood. Coming out of shut-in cell-like condition into open walk sings praises and glorifies God, beautifying life with purity and true goodness from principle after the perfect Model, appreciating given light, beginning with light already given and self-examining for love of God to find knowledge of His will with communication from the Lord. Placing oneself under favorable influence away from voluntary unbelieving company receives light and strength to grow firm in faith in Christ as personal Saviour without doubt, and some in the vicinity love the Lord and walk in shown truth. Following Jesus humbly, rejoicing in light, spreading it, living in cheerful obedience in subordination honoring Him and doing His Word, receives cleansing by faith alone not works as free ample provision renouncing all sin degree by degree, with justification, peace, promises of righteousness, sanctification, redemption and divine enlightenment.
Leaving hardness, coldness, lack of sympathy and loss of first love for conversion with new heart, Christ's love poured in, Sun of Righteousness admitted, baptism of the Holy Ghost and transformed sanctified actions conformed to God's will with Christ's spirit to seek the lost, is open to every teacher. Not retaining defects as Judas chose darkness rejecting light for evil desires, and not treating own judgment complete but seeking counsel with humility, sound judgment and weighed motives, belongs to the walk. Living by every ray received holding to Christ marks God's chosen not Babylon. Keeping first love, laying aside self-righteousness, following clear truth and heeding Laodicea's exposure of lukewarm self-satisfaction is required, while ministers full of self-esteem laying their own plans without this walk need entire change and thorough conversion lest the day come as a thief, in the position of those hearing without mixing faith and falling short of rest.
Definitely choosing the Lord's side sets a fixed God-traced line governing words, conduct and works, unseen by natural eye though Satan tries to blur it, requiring individual decision, for not being clearly on the Lord's side is warring on the enemy's side. Waiting obediently on the Lord without worry, doubt, unbelief, worldliness, fretting or scolding is the privilege of God's people in last days, receiving increased power, strength and grace proportionate to trials, tests and conflicts and seeing salvation day by day. Not looking to humans for wisdom but trusting the Lord and looking constantly to Jesus brings heart and mind under God's supervision, kept through coming trials so nothing prevails. Following Christ as imitators from belief in the Word gives cheerful bright experience not discouragement. Walking as light shines makes life a constant expression of God's love without stumbling blocks, watching to help associates with timely words as blessing bringing light, joy, comfort and grace, in contrast to amusement and self-gratification leaving no room for truth to possess the soul.
Following the light heeding the Spirit's reproofs not personal judgment is the only safety, and followers walk surely. Some closed the door and thenceforth did not walk in it, while cleansing under grace through parental correction, prayer and appeal for blessing breaks evil angels' power over children not yet cleansed and exposed. Being diligent students walking in the light learns of God and knows the only true God and Jesus Christ as life eternal, true science following on till goings forth are known as morning. The blood avails through confession, with the New Year a time to confess and turn gifts to better account, and Jesus longs to save while hating sin, calling sinners to lay sin on the Burden-bearer to be one with God and Christ, bearing credentials as lights proclaiming the Lamb who takes away sin. God gives light to be given through self-sacrificing labor together with Him, not receiving grace in vain but summoning every power as living sacrifice in Christ's self-denying mind with disinterested love, following His pattern from heaven, for His plan is not intricate: Christ's blood with Word and Spirit cooperating calls for living human channels in good works to save the perishing.
Cleansing comes by Jesus' worthiness alone not merit in our best, received by zealous repentance and belief trusting wholly on promises even in darkness without comfort, faith distinct from feeling taking blessing as already ours before rejoicing follows, and true cleanness in Christ presents prayers with God redirecting unwise requests to real need. Everyone placing himself on Christ's side faces all Satan's seductive power, yet grace can make clean by the Lamb's blood renewing the heart, bracing against temptation with longings for the Spirit, calling for the Word's life renewed daily and humble walk without false step, for soul and family worth exceeds all worldly gain. Cleansing by the blood is thorough reformation of the selfish heart when the Spirit reaches conscience, depending on Christ alone as risen Saviour since none keeps right paths a moment by self or another, with all things for life and godliness freely given with Christ, and the cleansed heart kept clean by obedience. The Lord knows every act yet removes every sin to meet sadness and weakness with restoring healing, freeing from lingering grief to do God-given work faithfully, cheerfully and happily with eyes on God, rescuing to holiness and Christlike likeness in truth, purity, generosity and love, received in repentance, confession, conversion, childlike submission, self-surrender, cross-bearing and following with thanks.
Faith in the Redeemer cleanses stains, to be taught children daily by instruction and example, grasped by the converted as remedy for law-exposed sin sustaining integrity and obedience. His blood alone erases past transgressions and covers sins for the humbly obedient relying on its merits, joined with personal repentance for breaking commandments which none can do for another, saving from sin not in sin. Sinners need this washing, which self-confidence and high-mindedness never remove, and its effective purity comes by following what is written not human will, conforming human will to God's. Jesus is able now, so believers may accept His light, hide in Him and share it. Living in truth's light requires humility and seeking God's wisdom, and walking in duty's light doing what blesses others and glorifies God brings happiness. Humbly accepting and living by given light is required, for refusal betrays trust and abused privileges, despised grace, rejected warnings and smothered convictions will testify against.
Appreciating light and following Jesus the Light by doing duty with accountability, moral independence and ability used through love of truth gives strength and enlightenment to press upward heavenward, while absorption in amusements like match games and football lets Satan nullify the Spirit's molding. Daily counsel and help from God in the walk is necessary for success in His work, lest servants fail, bringing clear unobscured discernment in covenant and oneness with Jesus. Living up to received light making God's kingdom and righteousness first draws nigh to God as present help, continuing faithfully undiscouraged by others' backslidings, lest darkness come. Making Christ the Light and following where He leads refuses every false misleading light, with mind and heart sensitive to evil, care in walk, elasticity in commandments and no waste on misleading scientific problems. Yielding the will to God and putting away darkness gives rejoicing, yet testing continues till probation closes to prove bearing hardship as good soldiers amid subtle foe and corrupt world, requiring daily heavenly wisdom and divine strength for Christlike spirit under every trial.
Praying for divine light and loving to live in it makes the Father's will meat and drink, principle the spring of conduct bearing the Spirit's fruit as naturally as figs, nature imbued with love working Christ's works willingly, life hid with Christ unconscious of own goodness never claiming sinlessness but humble while others perceive beauty and angels linger as a wall of fire. Taking a clear stand reflecting Christ is required, for departing blurs distinction between lovers of God and pleasure and weakens influence. Meditating on His character brings clearer beauty, rejoicing and warmed heart with greater understanding and accomplishment. Being in harmony with God seeking Him wholly with heart, mind, soul and strength in full-faith obedience and trust is required, while refusal leaves worked by another spirit, cuts off the Spirit, follows own impulses to gradual atheism, unskills in soul-leading and cannot give leaves of life. God demands a bright path not gloom in connection with the Light of the world, following His consistent example not wrong tracks, with schools not binding youth to misleading sentiments. Humble loving service and shared labor in presenting truth expresses the Christian privilege. God shining in and around the life now prepares for seeing the King in beauty, call higher, city entrance with right to the tree of life, eating and beholding Jesus, crown of glory and white robe, a future not to be lost.
Clear unobscured discernment enables standing to the close in the battlefront glorifying God, following humbling as a little child for pardon and the Spirit's rest with marrowy testimony, carried by Christ's grace and power in forward ranks kept only in covenant oneness with Jesus the exalted Head. Recognizing and repenting betrayal of brethren reproaching the cause is required, for without sincere repentance there is no walk in Christ's approval. Doing God's will overcomes selfishness, and pressing to the light in earnest prayer, coming together, laying hearts open, confessing without fear of spoiling experience and removing stumbling blocks brings fellowship love with God-given light clearing hindrances. Continuing to follow revealed truth learns to know God and grows able to receive more. Serving as a channel in true pure light leads souls to God's light, proving daily sanctification by yielding the whole being as thank offering and cultivating the heart uprooting weeds, stopping indifference and carelessness. Appreciating heaven's richest light becomes a channel restoring others with new heart, sweet compassionate spirit, healthful atmosphere, taste for lovely true good report and Christ-representing life refining others, opposite to condemning, stigmatizing and scorning seekers which ranks with Christ's enemy and closes the heart to the Healer who would cure faultfinding and make co-workers.
Those knowing present truth are called to live by light following Christ's example amid last-day dangers, for following Jesus in light amid darkness prepares and fits to stand in the day of the Lord. Not treating light with indifference, misusing it or stumbling as the Jews did marks followers. Evil deeds stand faithfully recorded for punishment unless repented, confessed and washed by atoning blood, and sinful words remain unless sincerely repented before God. Letting His Word abide, praying with childlike simplicity, doing humble duties faithfully, refusing human theories and Satan's specious tares, feeding on Christ's words as healthy fruit-bearing branches, follows on to know the Lord more though the end is unseen. Following on progressively till realized contrasts blindness stumbling unknowingly without union, clothed in self-righteousness, whose long absence reveals dangerous condition. Ceasing evil to know the Lord receives Jesus' purity and the Spirit's deep movings back to loyalty, encircled in free merciful love, saved to the utmost with songs and rejoicing, telling Calvary's love and cooperating with heaven to bring lost sheep to the fold. Living truth in the righteous way honoring Christ reflects His light to others.
Heeding warnings with devotion fixed on Jesus belongs to the walk, while disregarding messages to please self is contrary. Living by received light with responsibility to serve applies to the neglected South, cultivating that field and sharing ministry, and to living as reformers. Living by light from heaven with concern educates the suffering lacking knowledge, a duty on ministers and members especially Sabbath-keepers awaiting the Saviour, and receiving the Holy Spirit in power through faith to receive and recognize Him belongs with self-denying following. Growing day by day in willing obedience to all requirements broadens experience to full stature. Living obediently devotedly as children of light lets received light shine so others glorify God, a duty with reception. Living according to revealed truth in holiness dispels darkness with brighter light, refines character, restores God's moral image and ends confusion and strife. Receiving given truth and reforming as more comes belongs to the walk, for knowingly continuing brings guilt, and cleansing belongs to believers in its merit. Refusing to fix attention on perishable earth yielding pride and love of world, looking heavenward in close connection carrying truth into daily life and laying hold on heavenly things in probationary time, walks safely, while earthward eyes walk in darkness stumbling, worthless without that connection. Consenting to walk trusting implicitly and using knowledge in humble faithful work knows ways please God instead of daily uncertainty and doubt. Individually confessing sins refusing to claim nothing to confess, humbling pride and pleading till He reveals as pardoning Saviour, obeying with sanctified purpose to keep all commandments, has Christ formed within as hope of glory with clear truth holding rock-firm in testing, for Christ is light not darkness.
Gathering divine rays holding to Jesus through trials brings Christlike speech and love home. Doing confession's work now by faith laying hold of the blood for past errors must not be delayed by golden moments filled with amusements to forget, for happiness is inward not from surroundings, place, health, companions or flattery, but from clear conscience, commanded spirit and mind centered on God as peace, happiness and joy. Keeping distinct from the world on high ground as Christ's chosen faithful representative instead of the world converting the church receives and rightly uses light in His Word. Not walking alone belongs to accordance with given light under God's observing loving blessing. Refusing idols that take mind and affection is required, and cleansing as faith walks in light does not end growth, for stopping advance by faith enshrouds in darkness and safety lies in following on growing in truth. Receiving admonitions acknowledging His presence and turning from dishonest practices brings heaven's light into the soul-temple to comprehend truth and love God and neighbor with kind courteous mutual love, lest profession without life dishonor Christ. Living in connection doing Christ's words shares light for missionary salvation. Yielding and hanging helplessly on Him as Helper trusting and accepting Him as personal Saviour brings cleansing by precious blood alone, testing loyalty to His law as subjects of love with angels watching unto triumph. Living under the Spirit brings heaven's light to walk and live as God is in the light.
Being children of the day sober watching unto prayer in closing history guards amid deceiving satanic influences even against the elect, with angels beside through faith and prayer, and the worker guided by the Word walks in the Lord's light safely. Keeping hold of Christ in faithful obedience especially preaching and teaching His Word is the call. Placing under favorable influence growing firm is required. Receiving and practicing truth faithfully perseveres unto the Spirit's outpouring drawing near to God, while neglecting duty and resisting light leads to unbelief, weak zeal, blindness and hardening others. Being Christian in thought, word and deed sanctified through truth with faith working by love purifying the soul handles sacred things reverently, while unsanctified irreverent handlers have shut eyes to light and endanger religion. Living in obedience letting good works be seen glorifies God, with ministers and workers in humble prayerful dependence on grace and guidance. Pressing and cherishing light with single eye considering Jesus brings meek lowly practical life waiting to do His will. Beginning with light already given brings communication and knowledge of His will through self-examination for love of God. Self-control under provocation joins powers so divine leading is seen. Trusting Jesus reflecting light helps one another and brings salvation with ever-brightening progress, adding to the church through faithful witness. Following His shining seeking Him casting all cares in full trust makes right with God in close daily communion with precious victories in the chief work above all else, Jesus precious as dear Saviour.
Highly appreciating newly given truth and love of Jesus brings unity without dissension, greater sight of blessedness, success and large enjoyment of God's presence. Following Christ where He is recognizes Him present by the Spirit wherever righteousness and love shine, not merely seeking His former footprints nor gazing at supposed holy ground while disobeying, which He views with sadness. Hiding self in God on the higher platform gives convincing majesty to truth. Heart and mind under supervision kept through trials follows constant trust. Living in Christ with His mind separated from idols leaves no stumbling. Doing His will and way is required, for refusal leaves unconverted and position changes nothing, and pardon-seekers die to self and put away selfishness. Heeding light in harmony with His people is required, for unbelief and worldly attachment hinder fellowship. Viewing truly is required. Through faith people may be sanctified, holy and cleansed in this life sharing future joys of the redeemed. Calvary's blood purifies mind and heart from every selfishness, the cross everything to the perishing through the Son's suffering and death, restoring God's image by the Spirit with new living principle in sin-defiled minds, fully able to restore every believer accepting truth as in Jesus, given only as yoked with Christ studying the cross till it rivets and holds affections. Felt cleansing brings healing as the Sun of Righteousness, links life with Christ's life as sustenance, makes His gracious word manna and promises life, sweetness and peace beside which earth is empty. The blood cures wrong and effaces errors like dishonest management and undone required work, otherwise uncured and uneffaced.
Keeping first love and heeding Laodicea is required. Ministers living by Minneapolis and past-year light valuing truth and love of Jesus labor with unusual success and sense of God's presence. Cleansing by mercy trusting merits receiving Him as personal Saviour for whom He fulfilled law does not set aside justice, dishonor law or change salvation's conditions, same under new covenant as old, with eternal life for perfect obedience in thought, word and deed. Genuine fellowship and love mark the walk, while unconverted self-esteemed planners need entire change. The blood forgives as only true satisfaction and joy, to be presented from experience to reach even high-trust men needing special help with unpopular truth, with forgiven ministers and physicians its exponents. Wonderful light placed before His people is to be walked in receiving from Jesus, talking of light given and trusting Him. Following as imitators with cheerfulness is taught. Humbling conforming honoring truth brings approval on faithful soul-labor. Expressing God's love without stumbling helping associates is required. Following is the only safety. Those closing the door no longer walked. Youth are invited to come as they are giving the heart to be washed in His blood and fitted for mansions, cleansing near for callers with the Father freely giving all things with His Son and hearing contrite prayer. Fellowship and cleansing give young Christians understanding of duties to serve faithfully. Accountability measured by light makes testimony light putting away evil surmising and speaking, turning from self and others to what God and Jesus do cleansing the sanctuary, joining by cleansing the soul sanctuary of unrighteousness for the book of life and blotting out at refreshing, most solemn work for mortals. Walking with Jesus as overcomer proving worthy washed white is required to be found worthy. Living in truth and communion with Father and Son brings unity, with confession and reformation removing divisions and cleansing removing alienating effects. Those walking are not left in darkness nor to be criticized. Earnest reliance with unreserved piety safeguards and shines unconsciously. Acting for city multitudes requires thorough conversion keeping unity. Following Jesus as Leader in every battle gives balanced minds. Living in Christ separated from idols is required. Doing His will dying to self is required. Unsanctified handlers have shut eyes. Searching Scripture living truth hungers for wisdom taught of God apart from human theories. Those receiving light should live by it following His example. Salvation in blood alone as on doorposts is the only safety against death, all other devices vain, Jesus made sin-bearer to be sin-pardoning Saviour exchanging our sins for His righteousness, the faith of Jesus cleansing amply wholly entirely by faith in His saving ability, without which intellect and honor are lost, wounded for transgressions to heal, the only hope for time and song for eternity. Without His blood petitions and offerings are polluted and unacceptable, showing need of cleansing when approaching God.
Those living by post-1844 truth describe the walk. Humbling daily with single eye represents His work. Responsibility proportionate to revelation uses truth to beautify character and warn the erring. Judas chose darkness holding evil desires. Continuing in understanding and strength equips to lead sinners heavenward. Meditating continually deepens understanding. Walking in God's light means advancing in truth by diligent close search that brings clearer understanding of its brightness and value. It means having truth in the heart guiding to Christ as author of all truth and the only one who can cleanse from defilement, practicing its principles in peace. It means walking in harmony with the holy law in obedience that forms a character able to stand, while rejecting advanced light leaves in darkness.
Those who walk are true and sincere brethren beloved of God, humble in heart and wise in speech, holding steadily to purpose without confusion or discouragement even where a Judas is among disciples, keeping learners of truth unto sanctification from being turned aside. They lay up broad essential doctrinal truth as one string of jewels held by Christ's person and work as golden thread and living center, with all truth meeting in salvation by faith in Christ evidenced by Christlike character and perfect obedience. Walking brings fellowship with one another in receiving truth and letting its light shine among others. It is a privilege of living in perfect unity and love with fellow workers, letting Christ's love abide, being much in prayer, making attitude words and spirit a living epistle, and sharing together in presenting truth in meetings. The blood cleanses the spotted stained life where things between the soul and God spot character, and when washed by the Lamb nothing blocks abundant blessings and treasure, with God's joy within making joy full. Even one wrong action makes a blot that nothing but Christ's blood can wash away, so Bible knowers must live Christ's life carefully weighing every action as work lasting as eternity, sending blessing or evil unto life or death, living wholly for Christ in short time not half-hearted burying talents. This washing belongs to those who truly accept Christ, are changed by the Spirit and become partakers of divine nature. Felt daily in the heart, the cleansing blood makes living loving disciples who count communion with Jesus above position and praise, strong and tender through conflict and secret prayer, with humble lives eloquent in holy deeds revealing Christ and winning souls. Everyone who accepts the great gift with genuine repentance and conversion is cleansed, the controlling powers broken, learning in Christ's sacrifice to despise all iniquity.
The cleansing blood removes even the foul blot of adultery and breaking the seventh commandment, so even a watchman betraying trust can have stain taken away by confessing to God and brethren and making clean work instead of covering sin unfeeling as stone. The blood has opened a fountain to cleanse the world's sins, and perishing souls wash by believing in Christ as personal Saviour seeing Him by faith, brought from darkness to light casting off old sin-stained garments to put on His righteousness in pure holy life. The blood alone washes the deep long-lasting diseased spot from unyielding will, acted feelings and opposed reproof, which unless washed proves fatal ruining the soul and losing heaven, while cleansing affects the heart by truth refining purifying and fitting for the kingdom. Through faith in that cleansing blood souls are purified and made white, and the polluted soul can be washed from all stains through Jesus. Cleansing comes only to those feeling need of Christ as great Physician of soul and body and consenting to come under His saving influence and treatment, yet for everyone consenting there is hope.
The blood is efficacious only when everything between the person and God or brethren is removed, leaving the gift before the altar of prayer to do what Christ commanded in confessing and forsaking sin, bringing close relation and oneness with Christ as evidence God sent His Son, revealing the glory of God and giving hatred for separating sin. Even Judas would have been received and pardoned had he repented, but self-confidence, self-exaltation, high estimate of wisdom and self-justifying shut out pardon. Fellowship with God and one another requires pride, variance and strife for supremacy uncherished, every brotherly difference removed, heart cleansed from evil thoughts and misunderstandings swept away in preparation to sit with Christ and receive communion of His body and blood. Cleansing by His own blood from every stain is linked with repentance, confession and conversion to God as the way of salvation.
