1 John 2:23

Whosoever denieth the Son, the same hath not the Father: [but] he that acknowledgeth the Son hath the Father also.

Whoever denies the Son does not have the Father, while whoever acknowledges the Son has the Father also. To deny that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God, is to deny and reject both the Father and the Son, so that those who refuse to acknowledge Him have neither. Such denial includes denying the distinct personality of the Father and of Jesus Christ. Continuing through belief and obedience in those truths first received about the Father and the Son joins believers to them in love and in the unity for which Christ prayed, and continual faith in both is accompanied by the Holy Spirit who comforts and keeps from departing from the truth. This denial of Jesus as the Christ and of the Father and the Son is the deception of antichrist, seen in seducers and Spiritualist teachers who refuse to acknowledge Christ as the Son of God, while those who reject the Son show no more reverence for the Father than for the Son and stand in rebellion against God and His law.

Words and Context

Whoever denies the Son does not have the Father, while whoever acknowledges or believes in the Son has the Father also. To deny the Son is to have no part in the Father, and to acknowledge the Son is to have the Father also. To deny that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God, is to deny and reject both the Father and the Son. Denying Christ as the Son of God is rejecting both the Son and the Father, so that refusal to acknowledge Him leaves a person with neither the Son nor the Father.

The verse stands in the second chapter, which is plain truth to be read and studied with special meaning for those living in the last days. That chapter gives instruction on Christian fellowship and love, calling for keeping the love of Christ in the heart so that words and works have fragrance, for not leaving first love, and for having fellowship with God and with one another in the light rather than walking in darkness. The second chapter is the best sermon for bringing into practical life the instruction to ask in faith with simple trusting faith in God and not in human weakness, to abolish false science, and to be cautious not to be led astray by any man's supposed wisdom. It teaches to trust God as helper, to live as God's little children led and guided by the Lord in every step, to seek God and let no living man decoy from steadfast faith to follow another man's judgment since man has no more wisdom than what he obtains from God, and to look to God as the source of all wisdom and walk in the light of the Word, with the first chapter to be read and taken in its simplicity.

Denial, Faith, and Fellowship

To deny the Son is to deny the distinct personality of both the Father and Jesus Christ. To acknowledge the Son is to have the Father also, while to deny the Son is not to have the Father. Continuing in the truths first embraced and received about the distinct personality of the Father and the Son, through belief and obedience, joins believers to the Father and the Son in love. That continuing union is the unity for which Christ prayed.

Continual faith in both the Father and the Son is accompanied by the Holy Spirit. The Spirit comforts the believer and keeps that person from departing from the truth. Those who refuse to acknowledge Christ as the Son of God have neither the Son nor the Father.

Those who reject the Son show no more reverence for the eternal Father than for the Son. They stand in rebellion against God and His law. They treat Christ's blood with contempt and despising. Denial of Jesus as the Christ and of the Father and the Son is the deception of antichrist, and this warning applies to seducers who refuse to acknowledge Christ as the Son of God. Spiritualist teachers who refuse to acknowledge Christ as the Son of God are liars and antichrist. Modern Spiritualism by its denial of Christ is a denial of both the Father and the Son and a manifestation of antichrist.
