1 John 2:25

And this is the promise that he hath promised us, even eternal life.

Eternal life is the promise God has made, His promised gift. That promise belongs to those in whom the teaching heard from the beginning remains, so that they continue in the Son and in the Father. Remaining is of the word heard from the beginning abiding within, and abiding in Him now gives confidence and freedom from shame when He appears at His coming.

Continuing in the Son and the Father means holding to the truths about them received from the beginning. It means acknowledging Jesus as the Christ, believing in Him as Saviour, committing to His guidance, abiding in Christ, and refusing to be led astray by false teaching. Remaining in what was heard is kept by the anointing received from Him, which abides within, teaches all things, is truth and no lie, so that human teaching is unnecessary.

Continuing means keeping His word and His commandments, having the love of God perfected within, and walking as Christ walked. Knowing that He is righteous is shown by doing righteousness, which proves being born of Him. Those who share the promised life through Him gain victory over the world, the flesh, and the devil, and this abiding is lived out in cultivating love and standing with spiritual dominion over the powers of darkness.

Abiding in Him now gives confidence and freedom from shame when He appears at His coming. This great mystery is love beheld in the Lamb of God who takes away the sin of the world, with the image of His love stamped on the mind never to be effaced through Jesus Christ evidently set forth crucified, making believers partakers of the dignity of His suffering. Those who profess to know Christ while loving self, letting Christian principle fall low, and doing things that dishonor His name forfeit the conditions of acceptance with the Father, have no true assurance, and cannot rightly approach God to ask Him to fulfill His promise, for He would dishonor His own name by granting it to them while they dishonor Christ.

The verse stands as part of Christ's instruction to be studied with self-criticism and urgent setting of the heart in order. It calls every soul not to exalt self and disparage others but to confess and forsake sin and make diligent work for repentance in order to be cleansed from sin and made ready for the Lord's appearing, because souls are in peril in the great day of atonement with not a moment to lose. The chapter containing the promise continues the message of the first chapter and is to be read to be sure of walking in the knowledge of the truth and being a partaker of the divine nature.

It keeps singleness of purpose in the short time to work, guards the true understanding of what Jesus presents without crowding the mind with many things, trains the mind to comprehend the plain word of the Lord, and leads to a genuine experience of more value than is recognized and to walking humbly with God in which everything is gained. The verse belongs to a second chapter that brings into practical life the science of simple, trusting faith in God and not in human weakness, abolishing false science, refusing to be led astray by any man's supposed wisdom, and trusting God as helper. It is for living as God's little children led and guided by the Lord in every step, seeking God and letting no living man decoy from steadfast faith in God to follow another man's judgment, since man has no more wisdom than he obtains from God, and looking to Him who is the source of all wisdom and walking in the light of the Word of God in simplicity.
