1 John 2:27
But the anointing which ye have received of him abideth in you, and ye need not that any man teach you: but as the same anointing teacheth you of all things, and is truth, and is no lie, and even as it hath taught you, ye shall abide in him.
The anointing received from Christ abides in believers and teaches them all things they need to know, being truth and no lie, so they need not that any man teach them, and as it has taught them they abide in Him. This anointing is the Holy Spirit with which Christ was anointed, which He is ever ready to impart in fullness to those who come to Him with full purpose of heart. It keeps believers from those who would seduce them with false doctrines in the last time when many deny that Jesus is the Christ and deny the Father and the Son. Those taught directly by Christ Himself out of God's Word do not need to depend on men and their suppositions, but walk in the light of the Word with the Holy Spirit as Comforter and Teacher. Abiding in Him gives confidence and freedom from shame when He shall appear, and this abiding is the preparation all must have to be ready to meet the Lord.
The Anointing That Abides
The anointing received from Christ, received from Him, received from God, remains and abides in believers. It teaches them all things and what they need to know, and it teaches them the truth. This anointing is truth and is no lie, true and not false, and even as it has taught them they shall abide and remain in Him. Because this abiding Teacher is in them, they need not that any man teach them.
The anointing is the Holy Spirit and power with which Christ was anointed. Christ is ever ready to impart it in its fullness to those who come to Him with full purpose of heart. The church on earth is to receive daily of His fullness with the grace of Christ, the Spirit not given by measure.
Those who believe the Word and daily eat the bread of heaven are nourished every day. They are taught directly by Christ Himself and receive pure lessons from His own lips as the One who owns them and bought them with His blood, with the price of His own blood. Standing on the solid foundation of God's Word of incalculable value, with the Holy Ghost sent in Christ's name as Comforter and Teacher to teach all things and bring His sayings to remembrance, they do not need to depend on men and their suppositions and supposed suppositions. All who believe in Christ as a personal Saviour may eat of this rich banquet, for He is the tree of life to all who continue to feed on Him.
This abiding comes by beholding the Lamb of God who takes away the sin of the world. The image of His love is so stamped upon the mind that it can never be effaced. Jesus Christ is so evidently set forth crucified before them that they become a partaker of the dignity of His suffering. Looking into the heart of the great mystery, its interpretation is found to be love.
Guarded Against Deception
The abiding anointing keeps believers from those who would seduce them and guards them against those who deceive with false doctrines in the last time, when many antichrists deny that Jesus is the Christ and deny the Father and the Son. The heavenly anointing gives spiritual discernment to distinguish sacred truth from common ideas and to recognize errors mingled with sound doctrine. That discernment guards faith and sound judgment against confusion and keeps the great testing truth from being diminished by human inventions.
Letting what was heard from the beginning abide, and keeping believing and obeying the truth first received about the Father and the Son, means continuing in the Son and in the Father. This includes the truth about the distinct personalities of the Father and the Son, and those who so continue are joined to them in love, unto the promise of eternal life. Abiding in Him gives confidence and freedom from shame before Him when He shall appear and at His coming with power and great glory. This abiding is the preparation all must have to be ready to meet the Lord, while the following verses connect abiding with doing righteousness and being born of God, and knowing He is righteous shows everyone that does righteousness is born of Him.
The second chapter contains plain truths of great importance for those living in the last days and is to be read and studied. It is to be read together with the rebuke for leaving first love and the call to remember, repent, and do the first works, showing that presenting beautiful theories is not enough unless the love of Christ is in the heart to give fragrance to words and works, and that loss of this love is loss of all things. The verse calls believers to stand on vantage ground with spiritual dominion over the powers of darkness by cultivating love. The verse gives instruction to be studied and obeyed, calling every soul to criticize self, confess and forsake personal sins, repent diligently, and set the heart in order without delay. This cleansing from sin, putting away self-exaltation and disparaging of others, is the work to be done to be ready for the Lord's appearing in the great day of atonement.
The chapter shows that every individual soul is accountable to God for the way his service is carried forward, requiring deep thought and much seeking the Lord with singleness of purpose because time to work is short, needing the wisdom that comes from Christ who is sanctification and righteousness. It calls for walking in the knowledge of the truth and partaking of the divine nature, not crowding the mind with such a variety of things that the true understanding of what Jesus presents is lost, but constantly improving the mind to comprehend the requirements of the plain Thus saith the Lord. Now is the time to obtain that genuine experience, and it means much to walk humbly with God, for everything is gained by those who do this.
Taught by God Directly
God's little children are to be led and guided by the Lord in every step through simple, trusting faith in God and not in human weakness. The anointing means seeking God directly as helper and as the source of all wisdom, walking in the light of the Word of God, and bringing that trust into practical life. It refuses to be led astray by any man's supposed wisdom or decoyed from steadfast faith to follow another man's judgment, since man has no more wisdom than what he obtains from God.
God's workers obtain their experience from the Word of God and are taught by God out of His Word, depending on His Spirit to teach them. This forbids leading them to walk in the shadow of any other man or to work only according to prescribed rules with sermons mapped out for them, and it requires men taught directly by God rather than controlled by a spirit of Pharisaism. The Holy Spirit's anointing teaches and consecrates people for His work and qualifies consecrated workers to proclaim the words given them, and this qualification comes from the Spirit rather than from literary training. Outward education and scientific training can provide qualifications but cannot replace that inward teaching, for God is not dependent on learned or self-important people but can raise up workers taught by the Spirit rather than relying on the outward training and qualifications provided by scientific institutions.
God's anointing, a holy unction, is needed to instruct others, and with God's grace in the heart and a life in keeping with His will and footsteps, a person's words will be true and actions right. The anointing received from Christ remains in believers and teaches them all things, being true and not false, teaching them to abide in Christ. Receiving the Holy Spirit and living under Christ's guidance, and learning from Jesus through fellowship with Him, enables believers to teach and serve others by sharing what they receive through prayer and faith, as seen when laborers filled with the Spirit of Christ see hope even for the most hopeless.
When Christ abides in the heart He Himself is the teacher, so there is no need for any man to teach. Christ in the heart is revealed in words and spirit and in every business transaction, journeying with the believer in buying and selling as if in full view of the heavenly universe. A Witness stands by the side and keeps watch at the door of the lips, and as constant companion He keeps self from pushing others aside to make place for self. He sanctifies the soul-temple, turns the sight from one's own things to the things of others, and makes the Christ within recognize the Christ revealed in a brother. The unction from on high abiding in believers leads them in all their efforts to encourage order, discipline, and union of action, and this close imitation of the harmony and perfect order of the angelic host allows the angels of God to work successfully for them and cooperate with them.
