1 John 5:11

And this is the record, that God hath given to us eternal life, and this life is in his Son.

God has given eternal life as a free gift, and that life is in His Son, so whoever has the Son has life and whoever does not have the Son does not have life. Human beings have no immortality in themselves and do not inherit eternal life apart from Christ, for death is not a passage into continued life. Those who see Christ as He truly is and receive Him into the heart have everlasting life, because through faith His life becomes theirs and the Spirit of God dwelling in the heart by faith is the beginning of that life. Believing God's testimony about His Son gives full assurance, so believers may know they have eternal life with confidence, comfort, and praise even amid pain. Christ is the center and only source and hope of eternal life, the common Saviour and only remedy for sin who heals those bitten by the serpent's sting, so denying His divinity turns people away from life while belief brings them out of Satan's kingdom.

God's Gift in His Son

God has given eternal life as a gift, and that life is in His Son. Whoever has the Son has life, and whoever does not have the Son does not have life. Those who see Christ as He truly is and receive Him into the heart have everlasting life, for through faith His life becomes theirs. Believing God's testimony about His Son gives assurance of this gift, so believers may know that they have eternal life and are called to believe on the Son. This word gives encouragement for the preparation needed to meet the Lord when He appears with power and great glory, assuring believers that Christ who is their life will cause them to appear with Him in glory and to live though they were dead.

Living for self is set against life in Christ, for covetousness and the desire to gain for oneself cut the soul off from life, while the Spirit of Christ gives and sacrifices self for the good of others. Through faith the Spirit of God dwelling in the heart is the beginning of that eternal life, and this union is why believers will rise from the grave, because His life has become theirs. Death is not a passage into continued life, but eternal life is received through Christ. Human beings have no immortality in themselves and do not possess it apart from Christ Jesus. Eternal life is not inherited; it is received through Christ Jesus, because God gives it through Christ since this life is in the Son.

This assurance supports confidence in God and praise even amid pain, because His presence and the life He gives remain a source of hope and comfort. God has put that gift in writing like plain insurance papers, so that by His mercy believers possess knowledge of their duties and every facility and capability to discharge them. The life is received only through faith that holds the beginning of confidence firm unto the end with sin put away, when the full atonement becomes efficacious and sin is blotted out from the book of God. Those who abide in Him do not sin but do righteousness, becoming partakers of the divine nature and escaping the corruption in the world through lust as those bought with a price. The gospel sanctifies the soul and makes this life available to the receiver, for faith in Christ as the Life-giver gives life.

Through faith in Christ as the Life-giver a person receives life that measures with the life of God, which is union with God. Partaking of the divine nature brings escape from the world's corruptions, while faith working by love purifies the soul and bears the fruits of the Spirit. Eternal life is a privilege for all, even those in the lowest depths of sin, as acknowledged children of God and heirs with Christ to an immortal inheritance. This life is given through God's wonderful love manifested on Calvary's cross and through Jesus as a sin-pardoning Saviour who has made divine interposition in their behalf, like a chain let down from the throne of God long enough to reach the lowest depths and lift the lost and lowly from the pit of sin. Receiving what God has in store for those who do His will requires learning meekness and lowliness of spirit from Christ and being fitted for an abundant entrance into the city of God, beside which everything else is of no consequence.

Receiving Life Through Christ

To see Christ as He truly is and to receive Him into the heart is to have everlasting life, for through faith His life becomes the believer's own. The Spirit of God received into the heart by faith is the beginning of that eternal life, because it is through the Spirit that Christ dwells in believers. God has given eternal life and that life is in His Son, so the life is in the believer because he is in Christ.

This standing was made possible because Christ laid aside His royal robe and kingly crown and stepped down from His high command, joining divinity with humanity. By that descent He made Himself a steppingstone by which humanity may reach heaven and stand in favor with God. Eternal life is in Jesus Christ as the gift of the Father's infinite love in giving His beloved Son as a sacrifice for the fallen race, opening a channel for the outflow of God's infinite love so that all who believe are restored to favor and welcomed as repentant erring ones are welcomed.

Faith in Christ as the Life-giver gives life, and the gospel sanctifies the soul and makes that life available to the receiver. Through that faith a person receives life that measures with the life of God. Partaking of the divine nature brings escape from the corruption of the world through lust, while faith working by love purifies the soul and bears the fruits of the Spirit. That life is received only through faith that holds the beginning of confidence firm unto the end with sin put away, when the full atonement becomes efficacious and sin is blotted out.

Whoever receives and practices the words of Christ has eternal life because that life is in Christ. This is by eating the bread of life and drinking the water of salvation, by eating His flesh and drinking His blood, and then Christ's holiness fills and shapes the life. God's Word received and lived out daily is life eternal through Christ and gives firm reliance on Him as the living center. By beholding Him the beholder is changed into the same image, with nothing interposed between the soul and God.

All hopes of eternal life are centered in Christ, who is the center and only source and hope of eternal life and the common Saviour. He Himself is eternal life to all who will eat His flesh and drink His blood, the Sin-bearer and only remedy for sin who heals those bitten by the serpent's sting when they look to Him. Belief in Him brings people out of Satan's kingdom, while denying His divinity obscures the gospel, turns people away from that life, and keeps them in Satan's kingdom.

Living and Sharing Life

Eternal life is not gained by accumulating possessions or living for self, for to have the Son is to have life and to be without Him is to be without life. Covetousness and the desire to gain for oneself draw the person toward self and cut the soul off from life, so that rejecting divine love and living for self means rejecting life itself. In contrast to self-seeking, Christ's spirit gives and sacrifices self for the good of others.

Believing on Christ gives life in Him and makes believers obedient to all of God's commandments, leaving no excuse for breaking God's law because of Adam's sin. The life is received only through faith that holds the beginning of confidence firm unto the end with sin put away, when the full atonement becomes efficacious and sin is blotted out, so that those who abide in Him do not sin but do righteousness as partakers of the divine nature escaping the corruption in the world through lust. Receiving what God has in store for those who do His will requires learning meekness and lowliness of spirit from Christ and being fitted for an abundant entrance into the city of God, beside which everything else is of no consequence.

This union with Christ, in which through faith His life becomes theirs and the Spirit of God dwelling in the heart is the beginning of eternal life, is also why believers will rise from the grave. The gift gives encouragement from the Word for the preparation needed to be ready to meet the Lord when He appears with power and great glory, assuring believers that Christ who is their life will cause them to appear with Him in glory and to live though they were dead. The Word thus offers to each one who receives Jesus a preparedness for eternal life, for God has given eternal life and this life is in His Son.

Joined with justification by faith bringing peace with God, this gift found only in His Son gives assurance of His presence that calls Christians even in pain and suffering to refuse the dark side, to face the light, to praise God, and to shine abroad and reflect the grace Christ imparts to others. That assurance supports confidence in God and praise even amid pain, because His presence and the life He gives remain a source of hope and comfort. This immortal life through Jesus Christ is a promise to be received and gratefully celebrated in praise, prayer, and thanksgiving.

He is the center of eternal life and the only hope of the world, so those who know the truth must lift Him up and make Him known, holding Him up before the lost and repeating the story again and again. God's Word, when received and lived out daily, is life eternal through Christ and gives firm reliance on Him as the living center, so that those who hold forth the Word of life and show by their lives that they believe it bring conviction to people living in sin. Physical healing and care for the sick open the way to being won to Him to partake of Him, when physicians and nurses give the highest knowledge from the Word of truth, pray with and for the sick, and present heavenly truth in the most attractive way, so that restoring the body leads to winning the soul to Christ for eternal life.
