1 John 5:20

And we know that the Son of God is come, and hath given us an understanding, that we may know him that is true, and we are in him that is true, even in his Son Jesus Christ. This is the true God, and eternal life.

The Son of God has come and has given understanding so that people may know Him who is true and may be in Him that is true, even in His Son Jesus Christ. In coming, He represented the character of the Father, making the true God known through Himself. Jesus Christ Himself is the true God and eternal life.

This knowing and abiding belongs to those who are of God and believe on the name of the Son of God. It gives confidence that they have eternal life. It gives confidence that if they ask anything according to His will He hears them and they have the petitions they desire of Him.

The understanding needed to know the true God and to live in Him through His Son is given by the Lord alone, and it is unsafe to take another person's spirit in its place. The verse is a sure promise to those hungering and thirsting for instruction in righteousness that they shall be filled. They shall be given the spirit of heavenly wisdom and shall know and experience the movings of the Holy Spirit giving efficiency to God's word, so no one needs to walk in uncertainty grieving lack of the Spirit.

Everyone chosen of God is to improve the intellectual powers. They are to represent the character of Christ to the world as Christ represented the Father, and to pray humbly and earnestly for wisdom, for the secrets of wisdom, and for the counsel that is of God as their necessities require. Communion with God brings the strength, grace, and efficiency through the Holy Spirit needed for this life in God.

Those who seek Christ with all the heart find Him and He becomes very precious to the soul. In Him is everything to ask for — joy, pleasure, and satisfaction — and He will give them a place in His kingdom of glory.
