1 Kings 1:3

So they sought for a fair damsel throughout all the coasts of Israel, and found Abishag a Shunammite, and brought her to the king.

1 Kings 1:3 belongs to the closing history of David, when old age had left him physically weak and withdrawn from public life. His seclusion kept him at a distance from daily affairs, so that he was slow to learn what was developing in the kingdom. In that weakened state a search was made for a young attendant to wait upon him, and Abishag the Shunammite was brought to serve the aged king. This provision for his final days forms the immediate setting in which Adonijah rose in rebellion against the succession of Solomon.
