1 Kings 1:5

Then Adonijah the son of Haggith exalted himself, saying, I will be king: and he prepared him chariots and horsemen, and fifty men to run before him.

Adonijah the son of Haggith exalted himself to claim the throne of Israel, declaring that he would be king. To advance his claim he prepared chariots and horsemen, with fifty men to run before him as runners. His self-exaltation in aspiring to the throne was rebellion against God's authority, for God had appointed and directed that Solomon should succeed David. His rebellious plan to proclaim himself king was thwarted when faithful supporters reminded David of God's direction for Solomon, so David yielded the throne and Solomon was anointed and proclaimed king.
