Queen of Sheba Stands Before Solomonby emmanuel_higgins

1 Kings 10:7

Howbeit I believed not the words, until I came, and mine eyes had seen it: and, behold, the half was not told me: thy wisdom and prosperity exceedeth the fame which I heard.

The queen of Sheba came to Jerusalem with a retinue and gifts of spices and gold and precious stones to test Solomon with hard questions and to see for herself his famous works, having heard of his wisdom and of the magnificent temple he had built. She spoke with him about all that was in her heart, including the mysteries of nature, and he answered all her questions with nothing hidden while teaching her about the God of nature, the great Creator who dwells in the highest heaven and rules over all, a knowledge that reflected God's wisdom. When she had seen all his wisdom and the house he had built there was no more spirit in her. She acknowledged that the report she had heard in her own land of his acts and wisdom was true, that she had not believed the words until she came and her eyes had seen it, that less than half had been told her, and that his wisdom and prosperity exceeded the fame she heard. She called his men and his servants happy who continually stand before him and hear his wisdom.

By the end of the visit she had been so fully taught the source of his wisdom and prosperity that she blessed the Lord his God for setting him on the throne of Israel to do judgment and justice. This was the impression God designed to be made on all peoples, as Solomon for a time honored God by pointing visitors to the Creator of heaven and earth and Ruler of the universe. During Israel's prosperity under him, truth-seeking people from other nations and many lands were welcomed rather than turned away and were led to learn about God as Creator. This praise describes Solomon's early reign when he ruled wisely and justly, which later changed when he spent resources to please his godless wives and glorify himself, diverting money from care for the poor and imposing heavy taxes on them.

What is seen can surpass what was heard, so that less than half was told, which applies to Jesus Christ, whose life and love cannot be fully conveyed even by many accounts and much information about Him. The verse also describes the experience of coming to Scripture for oneself and finding that the beauty and glory of the Bible and the wisdom of God found there far exceed anything heard about it. Such searching with great delight reveals a Saviour perfectly adapted to the wants of a fallen world, a friend and Saviour who is the chiefest among ten thousand, giving everything the heart can desire and a remedy for every disease of the soul with wisdom from God. What before seemed dark and contradictory and was rejected becomes delight, a lamp to the feet and a light to the path and a firm Rock in life, causing all taste for other reading to be lost in applying the heart to get wisdom, as discovered when Miller found the Bible contained more than he had imagined and it became to him a source of delight, wisdom, and spiritual healing.
