1 Kings 11:13

Howbeit I will not rend away all the kingdom; but will give one tribe to thy son for David my servant’s sake, and for Jerusalem’s sake which I have chosen.

This promise of mercy in judgment belongs to the history and account of Solomon's apostasy. His alliances with heathen nations and his marriages to heathen wives corrupted his faith and turned him to the worship of false gods. His disloyalty and idolatry broke his covenant with God.

The rending and division of his kingdom was chastisement for that apostasy. His apostasy brought dishonor upon himself, upon Israel, and upon God. His history stands as a warning that error can corrupt faith and lead people away from truth.
