1 Kings 11:25
And he was an adversary to Israel all the days of Solomon, beside the mischief that Hadad did: and he abhorred Israel, and reigned over Syria. And he was an adversary to Israel all the days of Solomon, beside the mischief that Hadad did: and he abhorred Israel, and reigned over Syria.
The verse identifies Rezon, a captain over a band, as the one who came to abhor Israel and to reign over Syria as an adversary troubling Israel all the days of Solomon. His opposition stood beside the mischief of Hadad, and together their harassment weakened the kingdom.
He was raised up after Solomon turned from the Lord to other gods despite being warned twice, until apostasy was complete and the heart was hardened in transgression. At that point the case seemed well-nigh hopeless.
God Himself stirred up Rezon as another adversary, removing His protecting care and permitting adversaries to harass and weaken Solomon's kingdom as a judgment for unfaithfulness. This hostility was one of those terrible judgments by which God sought to arouse Solomon to a realization of the sinfulness of sin and to bring him to repentance.
Even under this discipline God did not forsake Solomon or utterly cut him off, but still offered him hope and deliverance from the bondage of sin.
