1 Kings 11:28

And the man Jeroboam was a mighty man of valour: and Solomon seeing the young man that he was industrious, he made him ruler over all the charge of the house of Joseph.

The verse introduces Jeroboam the son of Nebat as a servant of Solomon. He is presented as a young man distinguished by courage and valor, capability, intelligence, and diligence and industriousness in work. Seeing those qualities in him, Solomon placed responsibilities upon him and advanced him at different times.

That advancement culminated in Solomon making him ruler and overseer over all the charge and labor force of the house of Joseph. This elevation to authority set him in a position to oppose Solomon. His later rising against the king became one of the troubles that God permitted to confront Solomon, making Solomon's own servant his adversary.
