Ahijah Gives Jeroboam Ten Torn Piecesby emmanuel_higgins

1 Kings 11:29

And it came to pass at that time when Jeroboam went out of Jerusalem, that the prophet Ahijah the Shilonite found him in the way; and he had clad himself with a new garment; and they two were alone in the field:

The verse depicts Ahijah meeting Jeroboam alone in the field outside Jerusalem, with Ahijah clothed in a new garment. The meeting took place years before Jeroboam became king, with Ahijah identified as the prophet of Shiloh. Ahijah tore the new garment into twelve pieces and told Jeroboam to take ten pieces as a sign that the God of Israel would tear the kingdom from Solomon and give ten tribes to Jeroboam. The division would come because Israel had forsaken God to worship Ashtoreth of the Zidonians, Chemosh of the Moabites, and Milcom of the Ammonites, and had not walked in God's ways to do right and keep His statutes and judgments as David had done. The whole kingdom would not be taken from Solomon, who would remain prince all his life for the sake of David who kept God's commandments and statutes, but the kingdom would be taken from his son's hand and ten tribes given to Jeroboam.

The verse begins and records the prophecy that the kingdom would be divided. That prediction was fulfilled after Rehoboam rejected the people's request for reform, when Judah and Benjamin formed the kingdom of Judah under Rehoboam and the ten northern tribes formed Israel under Jeroboam. The same Ahijah who foretold Jeroboam's rise to the throne later foretold the ruin that followed Jeroboam's apostasy, declaring that Israel would be uprooted and scattered because of its idolatry and the sins Jeroboam led the people to commit.
