Rehoboam Answers the People Harshly at Shechemby emmanuel_higgins

1 Kings 12:15

Wherefore the king hearkened not unto the people; for the cause was from the LORD, that he might perform his saying, which the LORD spake by Ahijah the Shilonite unto Jeroboam the son of Nebat.

Rehoboam set aside the counsel of the older men to serve the people with kindness and to answer them with good words. In its place he answered the people roughly after the counsel of the young men. His answer threatened a heavier yoke and harsher chastisement than before.

Because he would not listen to the people and grant their request, his rash refusal and oppressive policy helped bring about revolt. All Israel then broke with the house of David and departed to their tents. Yet this refusal was from the Lord, who by providence overruled it to perform His word spoken by Ahijah the Shilonite to Jeroboam the son of Nebat. The fulfillment was the rending and division of the kingdom, leaving Rehoboam to reign only over those dwelling in the cities of Judah. That division left Judah and Benjamin under Rehoboam and the ten northern tribes under Jeroboam, in fulfillment of the prophet's prediction concerning the kingdom.
