1 Kings 12:2
And it came to pass, when Jeroboam the son of Nebat, who was yet in Egypt, heard of it, (for he was fled from the presence of king Solomon, and Jeroboam dwelt in Egypt;) And it came to pass, when Jeroboam the son of Nebat, who was yet in Egypt, heard of it, (for he was fled from the presence of king Solomon, and Jeroboam dwelt in Egypt;)
This verse belongs to the rending of the kingdom after Rehoboam's irreparable mistake at Shechem, when he refused the people's request for decided reforms. With his chosen counselors he announced the perpetuation and increase of the evils introduced during Solomon's reign. Solomon's oppressive measures had aroused many thousands among the tribes, who felt they could do nothing other than rebel against the house of David. In rebelling, the people acted in harmony with the prophet's prediction concerning the rending. The twelve tribes were then divided, with Judah and Benjamin forming the lower kingdom of Judah under Rehoboam and the ten northern tribes forming the kingdom of Israel with Jeroboam as their ruler.
