1 Kings 12:20

And it came to pass, when all Israel heard that Jeroboam was come again, that they sent and called him unto the congregation, and made him king over all Israel: there was none that followed the house of David, but the tribe of Judah only.

After Solomon's death the kingdom was rent in two when the tribes that had rebelled against Rehoboam's rule sent for Jeroboam and made him king over Israel, the ten northern tribes. None followed the house of David except Judah alone. Judah and Benjamin together formed the kingdom of Judah under Rehoboam.

The revolt grew out of oppressive policies begun under Solomon, which Rehoboam chose not to lighten but to continue and make even harsher. In this rending was fulfilled the prophetic prediction that the kingdom would be divided. Jeroboam himself had been Solomon's servant, and his years of service had fitted him to rule, yet he failed to put his trust in God. The apostasy that followed that division brought dishonor upon the name of Israel's God among the heathen nations.
