1 Kings 12:27
If this people go up to do sacrifice in the house of the LORD at Jerusalem, then shall the heart of this people turn again unto their lord, even unto Rehoboam king of Judah, and they shall kill me, and go again to Rehoboam king of Judah.
God intended the appointed going up to offer sacrifice in the house of the Lord at Jerusalem to restore unity to Israel and to bring about a united kingdom again. Jeroboam viewed that same going up through self-preserving fear, reasoning that if the people went up to sacrifice at Jerusalem their hearts would turn again to their lord, even to Rehoboam king of Judah, and that they would kill him and return to Rehoboam king of Judah. To keep his kingdom he planned to keep Israel from going up, and his fear drove him to seek and set up other worship centers within his own kingdom, including two calves.
When those plans were put into operation they led the children of Israel away from God into idolatry. Terrible evils were both performed and permitted under that course. The Judge of all the earth lays the awful results of that course to Jeroboam's charge.
The verse therefore warns against establishing two places for tithe-paying and two places for worship. The medical work and the ministry are one interest laboring to one end and must not be separated. Men today are in danger of manifesting the same self-preserving spirit and doing a work similar in character to Jeroboam's. To the charge of those who follow his example will be laid the results of their wrong course.
