1 Kings 12:3

That they sent and called him. And Jeroboam and all the congregation of Israel came, and spake unto Rehoboam, saying,

At Shechem, Jeroboam and all the congregation of Israel came to Rehoboam to ask for decided reforms in the administration of government after the oppressive measures of Solomon's reign. Rehoboam's answer to this request was an irreparable mistake, an unwise and unfeeling exercise of power that revealed pride of position and authority in him and in his chosen counselors. Instead of following a plan in harmony with God's purpose by listening to the people, he announced his intention to perpetuate and add to the evils introduced during Solomon's reign. The Lord did not allow Rehoboam to carry out the policy he proposed, and the many thousands aroused by oppression rebelled against the house of David in harmony with the prophet's prediction concerning the rending of the kingdom. That rebellion left Judah and Benjamin as the lower kingdom of Judah under Rehoboam and the ten northern tribes as the kingdom of Israel under Jeroboam.
