The Old Prophet's Sons Tell Him What Happenedby emmanuel_higgins

1 Kings 13:12

And their father said unto them, What way went he? For his sons had seen what way the man of God went, which came from Judah.

In the verse the old prophet asks which way the man of God from Judah went because his sons had seen his route, so he could learn it and overtake him on his return from Bethel. The man of God had been given a clear command from the Lord not to return to that place or eat there. The old prophet falsely claimed that an angel had told him to bring the man of God back to Bethel.

God had passed by the local prophet whose lie opposed God's word and had chosen a man from another place to deliver the message. The man of God should not have accepted a contrary claim from another prophet, but he was over-persuaded by the lie, was deceived, turned back, and disobeyed God. His disobedience cost him his life; he was killed.

His fate confirmed the truth of the prophecy. His history stands as an example of a deceived and disobedient prophet and as a warning against disobedience. The account warns that those who knowingly reject a clear word from God may be left under condemnation to follow their own deceptive choices.
