The Old Prophet Pronounces Judgment at the Tableby emmanuel_higgins

1 Kings 13:21

And he cried unto the man of God that came from Judah, saying, Thus saith the LORD, Forasmuch as thou hast disobeyed the mouth of the LORD, and hast not kept the commandment which the LORD thy God commanded thee,

The verse is a condemnation of the man of God from Judah for disobeying the mouth of the Lord and failing to keep the commandment God had given him. He had been told not to eat and drink at Bethel, yet he returned there and ate and drank after accepting the old prophet's false invitation and counterorder. A contrary human claim did not cancel the clear word already received, even when it professed that an angel had given a different message. God's command could be countermanded only by God himself, and the man was responsible for testing the claim against God's voice rather than turning from it.

The condemnation was announced through the older prophet while the two sat together at the table. It declared that the disobedient man would die away from his ancestral burial place and would not be buried with his fathers. That sentence was soon literally and swiftly fulfilled when a lion killed him on the way. Its fulfillment demonstrated how serious disobedience to an express command of God is and confirmed the truth of the prophecy.

His death became a further evidence to Jeroboam that God's words were true. It showed that the warning would not be proved false by his escaping punishment, and that God's word cannot be set aside without consequence. It should have led the king to turn from evil and serve the Lord. The history of the disobedient prophet does not by itself establish disobedience against another person accused as a deceived prophet. The accuser must show what command was supposedly violated, and must not twist testimony to support a theory while dismissing it as false when it disagrees.
