The Man of God Refuses Jeroboam's Rewardby emmanuel_higgins

1 Kings 13:9

For so was it charged me by the word of the LORD, saying, Eat no bread, nor drink water, nor turn again by the same way that thou camest.

The charge by the word of the Lord was clear, explicit, specific and binding: the man of God was not to eat bread or drink water in Bethel, was not to remain there, was not to return by the same way he came, but was to leave for Judea without delay. That command governed his answer when King Jeroboam offered hospitality and a promised reward, for obedience to the Lord took precedence over accepting hospitality or payment. The command remained binding and was meant by God even when another person claimed that an angel had brought a different message. Turning back and eating and drinking abandoned that instruction and breached his duty, making him disobedient to the word of the Lord. That disobedience led to his death, fulfilling the prophecy of his death. The episode teaches that a person must hold to the Lord's direct, plain word rather than accept a contrary human message, even from someone claiming prophetic authority.
