1 Kings 14:20

And the days which Jeroboam reigned were two and twenty years: and he slept with his fathers, and Nadab his son reigned in his stead.

The verse marks the close of Jeroboam's troubled reign of twenty-two years. His reign ended in disastrous defeat in war with Abijah, Rehoboam's successor, during Abijah's reign. After that defeat Jeroboam never recovered strength again, but the Lord struck him and he died. His son Nadab reigned in his place as his successor. His death began a period lasting until Elijah's appearance before Ahab, during which Israel suffered steady spiritual decline under rulers who did not fear Jehovah and encouraged strange forms of worship, while most of the people lost sight of their duty to serve the living God and adopted many practices of idolatry.
