1 Kings 16:34
In his days did Hiel the Beth-elite build Jericho: he laid the foundation thereof in Abiram his firstborn, and set up the gates thereof in his youngest son Segub, according to the word of the LORD, which he spake by Joshua the son of Nun.
Hiel the Bethelite rebuilt Jericho during the reign of Ahab, a time of apostasy in Israel. The rebuilding was sanctioned by Ahab. God in His wrath had caused Jericho to be torn down and had designed that it should remain unbuilt as a monument of His displeasure, declaring through His prophet that it should never be rebuilt, so that the curse of heaven would surely rest on anyone who ventured to rebuild it.
In laying the foundation of the city Hiel lost his firstborn Abiram, and in setting up its gates he lost his youngest son Segub. This fulfilled the curse and word the Lord had spoken through Joshua the son of Nun when Jericho fell, that the city should never be rebuilt. Its fulfillment shows that God's word spoken through Joshua remained binding even when Israel had lost reverence for it.
