1 Kings 17:24

And the woman said to Elijah, Now by this I know that thou art a man of God, and that the word of the LORD in thy mouth is truth.

This account belongs to Elijah finding refuge with the widow of Zarephath, a town belonging to Zidon that was known in New Testament times as Sarepta. The widow was not an Israelite and had never shared the privileges and blessings of God's chosen people, yet she believed in the true God and had lived up to all the light shining on her pathway. Because the drought left Elijah with no safety in the land of Israel, God sent him to this woman to find shelter and asylum in her home.

The verse closes the story of Elijah with the widow of Zarephath and stands connected with his stern confrontation of Ahab over troubling Israel. After Elijah prayed and her son was restored to life, the widow recognized from this return to life that he was a man of God and that the word of the Lord in his mouth was truth. That revival of the child confirmed his message to her.

Her confession followed God's preservation of her life and her son's life in return for her sharing her morsel with Elijah in a time of want. The verse promises great blessing to all who in trial and want give sympathy and assistance to others in greater and more needy condition. God's power is no less now than in the days of Elijah.
