1 Kings 20:27

And the children of Israel were numbered, and were all present, and went against them: and the children of Israel pitched before them like two little flocks of kids; but the Syrians filled the country.

The verse belongs to the history of the two separate kingdoms of Judah and Israel for about eighty years, from the revolt of the ten tribes to the death of Jehoshaphat, covering the reigns of several kings of both Judah and Israel. It is part of the account of Ben-hadad king of Syria's attack on Ahab and of Israel's defeat of him. It pictures Israel as numbered and all present and pitched before Syria like two little flocks of kids or young goats, while the Syrians filled the country, yet Israel went out against them despite being greatly outnumbered.

It reflects another effort by God to win the weak Ahab. It sets up a victory that God gave Israel to show Ahab that the triumph came from Jehovah. It supplies an image of a tiny force beside a vast host that illustrates how the ancient armies of Rome and Macedon were small beside the armies of modern Christian nations.
