1 Kings 20:29
And they pitched one over against the other seven days. And so it was, that in the seventh day the battle was joined: and the children of Israel slew of the Syrians an hundred thousand footmen in one day. And they pitched one over against the other seven days. And so it was, that in the seventh day the battle was joined: and the children of Israel slew of the Syrians an hundred thousand footmen in one day.
The verse belongs to the history of the separate kingdoms of Judah and Israel, covering roughly eighty years from the revolt of the ten tribes to the death of Jehoshaphat, including the reigns of several kings. Its immediate setting is the defeat of Ben-hadad, king of Syria. The victory was foretold when a prophet warned Ahab beforehand.
God gave Israel the victory over the Syrians through a mere handful of Israelites, who destroyed one hundred thousand footmen of Ben-hadad's troops in one day. The victory was another effort by God to win the weak Ahab by making him know that it came from Jehovah. Despite that knowledge, Ahab later disobeyed again.
