1 Kings 22:27
And say, Thus saith the king, Put this fellow in the prison, and feed him with bread of affliction and with water of affliction, until I come in peace. And say, Thus saith the king, Put this fellow in the prison, and feed him with bread of affliction and with water of affliction, until I come in peace.
The command to imprison on bread and water of affliction belongs to Ahab's rejection of the warning given by Micaiah the son of Imlah against joining with Jehoshaphat to retake Ramoth-gilead, one of the old cities of refuge, from the Syrians by force. Ahab hated Micaiah because he foretold evil and not good concerning him. Yet at Jehoshaphat's firm insistence Micaiah was summoned and charged to speak nothing but truth in the name of the Lord. Micaiah then declared that he saw all Israel scattered upon the hills like sheep without a shepherd, with the word of the Lord for every man to return to his house in peace.
That vision should have shown both kings that Heaven did not favor the project. But Ahab had marked out his course and was determined to follow it. Jehoshaphat, having rashly promised to stand with him in the war, was reluctant to withdraw. So both went up to Ramoth-gilead, where Ahab was shot and died at evening and a proclamation went through the host for every man to return to his city and country, fulfilling the prophet's word.
