1 Kings 4:24

For he had dominion over all the region on this side the river, from Tiphsah even to Azzah, over all the kings on this side the river: and he had peace on all sides round about him.

The river on whose western side the dominion lay was the Euphrates. The verse sets forth the extent of Solomon's kingdom at the height of Israel's greatness, when he ruled over all the kings on the west side of that river and had peace on every side. That wide dominion and surrounding peace fulfilled the promise first given to Abraham and afterward repeated through Moses. The promise was conditional, that if Israel diligently kept God's commandments to love the Lord, to walk in all His ways, and to cleave to Him, God would drive out mightier nations before them and give them every place upon which their feet trod, from the wilderness and Lebanon, from the Euphrates to the uttermost sea, with no man able to stand before them.
