1 Kings 6:28

And he overlaid the cherubims with gold.

This detail belongs to the account of Solomon's construction of the temple. There the cherubim of the inner sanctuary were coated in gold. That gilding helped give the building its unmatched richness, beauty, and costliness of design.

The temple thus built succeeded the wilderness tabernacle as the sanctuary, being larger and permanent while preserving the tabernacle's proportions and furnishings. The earthly sanctuary and its furnishings were made according to the pattern shown to Moses and given to David. The larger cherubim stood upon the floor at either end of the ark and represented the heavenly angels who continually guard God's law.
