1 Kings 8:24

Who hast kept with thy servant David my father that thou promisedst him: thou spakest also with thy mouth, and hast fulfilled it with thine hand, as it is this day.

This verse belongs to Solomon's prayer at the dedication and consecration of the temple, recorded in 1 Kings 8:22-61. In it Solomon acknowledges as present fact that God had kept the promise made to David his father, speaking it with His mouth and then fulfilling it with His hand by His own action and deeds. Pointing to that completed promise, he asks God to keep the further promise that David's line would continue on Israel's throne, on condition that his descendants walked in God's law. The prayer expresses deep humility and Solomon's own need for divine power.

In the prayer Solomon asks for his people that their hearts would be undividedly given to the Lord, showing that Israel depended on the God of Israel. The prayer teaches that God is not confined to a temple building like the heathen gods were thought to be. God meets His people by His Spirit when they gather to worship, visits them in their homes and wherever they are, and gives His children the privilege of worshiping Him in every place. God honored the people who built the temple as a place to meet for worship of Him, and sincere worshipers received His blessing.

The prayer reveals the just, compassionate, and God-fearing spirit of Solomon's early reign, which he afterward abandoned when pride, ambition, and indulgence made him tyrannical and oppressive and a seducer of his people into idolatry. Even after receiving divine manifestations and serving in the construction of the temple, Solomon later forsook the temple to worship idols. Although the prayer shows that Solomon once honored God and was closely related to Him, he later became an idolater who built high places for his wives' gods.
