1 Kings 8:61

Let your heart therefore be perfect with the LORD our God, to walk in his statutes, and to keep his commandments, as at this day.

Spoken as Solomon's closing appeal to Israel after his dedicatory prayer at the temple, the verse calls the people to wholehearted loyalty to God. A heart perfect with the Lord is a wholly devoted, undivided and steadfast heart that does not choose its own way and separate from Him. That inward devotion is shown by continuing to walk in His ways and keep His commandments as faithfully as on that day. Such undivided obedience is the condition for receiving His blessing in worship, for remaining faithful without backsliding, and for drawing near to Him in prayer even far from the temple. Solomon himself afterward violated in heart and life the very standard he had commended, and his step-by-step fall through self-chosen alliances, idolatrous marriages and divided loyalty warns that wisdom, sacred responsibility and a good beginning do not protect any who turn from God.

Dedication Charge and Meaning

The call was given at the dedication of Solomon's temple as his prayer and exhortation to the congregation of Israel, his solemn charge and closing appeal after his dedicatory prayer. It was spoken while he was still pure and upright in heart, exalting God's law before the people and acting as a just, compassionate, God-fearing ruler who sought their wholehearted loyalty. He urged them to give undivided allegiance to God, to remain faithful to Him as they were at that time.

A heart perfect with the Lord is a heart wholly devoted to Him, undivided and steadfast toward Him. It does not choose its own way and does not separate itself from God in heart. Steadfast obedience is what such inward perfection means.

That inward wholeness is shown outwardly by walking in His statutes and ways and by keeping His commandments. The closing words, as at this day, press the people to continue in the faithfulness they profess in that dedicatory hour. Continued faithfulness and divine favor rest on this obedient walk.

Condition for Divine Blessing

The verse lays down the condition on which blessings in worship are received, that the heart be perfect with the Lord by walking in His statutes and keeping His commandments. Dependence rests upon the God of Israel, and sincere worshipers receive His blessing when they are wholly devoted to Him in obedience. That wholehearted loyalty, shown by walking in His ways and keeping His statutes and commandments, is joined to the knowing of His favor, with the call to remain faithful as at that day.

Such wholehearted obedience is the condition of continued faithfulness to God, demanding loyalty and integrity that preserves His people from backsliding. It stands connected with the continuing way for faithful people to approach Him through prayer even when far from the temple or in captivity. As long as Solomon steadfastly obeyed the commandments, God was with him as he had prayed to be, even as He had been with David who walked before Him in truth and righteousness and uprightness of heart. Mercy was given according as they walked before Him in truth, righteousness, and uprightness of heart, and God dealt with them just according to their faithfulness, proving that He did not sanction their sins.

Carried into family life, the call to carry out the Lord's word faithfully means parents teach and model obedience with wholehearted commitment so that children learn reverence and gratitude. Households that walk in God's statutes in this spirit honor God, recognize Him as the source of their blessings, and give Him thanks and praise.

Solomon's Apostasy and Warning

Solomon himself broke, violated and denied in heart and life the very standard of wholehearted devotion he had commended to Israel, turning from God's ways into the opposite of an undivided heart toward God. He who had charged the people to keep the heart undivided, to walk in God's statutes and keep His commandments instead of choosing one's own way and separating from God in heart, became the very offender against his own charge. His later course was the opposite of that wholehearted devotion he had prayed for, as he allowed pagan beliefs and worship to become part of his religion.

His fall came through thirst for political power and through alliances and friendships with pagan and heathen kingdoms. In violation of God's express command he took wives from idolatrous and heathen nations, and through desire for alliance, marriage with heathen wives and worship of false gods he cast off allegiance to God. He allowed pagan beliefs, idolatrous worship, false gods and immoral and corrupt rites to become part of his religion, joining purity with idolatry.

By choosing his own course and separating his heart from God, his divided loyalty led step by step to disobedience and ruin. In yielding to temptation and evil associations he dishonored himself, dishonored Israel, and dishonored God. Having cast off allegiance he lost mastery of himself, became tyrannical and oppressive, and changed from one who interceded for his people into their seducer.

His example shows that a charge to faithfulness does not ensure continued faithfulness, for self-sufficiency, pride, temptation and corrupting associations can lead a person away from God and bring dishonor. Evil associations and ungodly companionship with idolatrous nations can weaken religious principles and lead to idolatry. Even a mind once given to God and inspired to write the precious wisdom of Proverbs, and even great wisdom and sacred responsibility, do not protect one who turns from God.
